Chandra X-ray Sources in the Collapsed-Core Globular Cluster M30 (NGC 7099)
We report the detection of six discrete, low-luminosity (Lx < 10^33 erg/s)
X-ray sources, located within 12 arcsec of the center of the collapsed-core
globular cluster M30 (NGC 7099), and a total of 13 sources within the half-mass
radius, from a 50 ksec Chandra ACIS-S exposure. Three sources lie within the
very small upper limit of 1.9 arcsec on the core radius. The brightest of the
three core sources has a luminosity of Lx (0.5-6 keV) = 6x10^32 erg/s and a
blackbody-like soft X-ray spectrum, which are both consistent with it being a
quiescent low-mass X-ray binary (qLMXB). We have identified optical
counterparts to four of the six central sources and a number of the outlying
sources, using deep Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based imaging. While the
two proposed counterparts that lie within the core may represent chance
superpositions, the two identified central sources that lie outside of the core
have X-ray and optical properties consistent with being CVs. Two additional
sources outside of the core have possible active binary counterparts. We
discuss the X-ray source population of M30 in light of its collapsed-core

Stellar Variability in the Globular Cluster Terzan 5
We present the results of a search for variability in and near the core of
the metal-rich, obscured globular cluster Terzan 5, using NICMOS on HST. This
extreme cluster has approximately solar metallicity and a central density that
places it in the upper few percent of all clusters. It is estimated to have the
highest interaction rate of any galactic globular cluster. The large extinction
towards Terzan 5 and the severe stellar crowding near the cluster center
present a substantial observational challenge. Using time series analysis we
discovered two variable stars in this cluster. The first is a RRab Lyrae
variable with a period of ~0.61 days, a longer period than that of field stars
with similar high metallicities. This period is, however, shorter than the
average periods of RR Lyraes found in the metal-rich globular clusters NGC
6441, NGC 6388 and 47 Tuc. The second variable is a blue star with a 7-hour
period sinusoidal variation and a likely orbital period of 14 hours. This star
is probably an eclipsing blue straggler, or (less likely) the infrared
counterpart to the low mass X-ray binary known in Terzan 5. Due to the extreme
crowding and overlapping Airy profile of the IR PSF, we fall short of our
original goal of detecting CVs via Palpha emission and detecting variable

Collecting, analyzing and archiving of ground based infrared solar spectra obtained from several locations
The infrared solar spectrum as observed from the ground under high resolution contains thousands of absorption lines. The majority of these lines are due to compounds that are present in the Earth's atmosphere. Ground based infrared solar spectra contain information concerning the composition of the atmosphere at the time the spectra were obtained. The objective of this program is to record solar spectra from various ground locations, and to analyze and archive these spectra. The analysis consists of determining, for as many of the absorption lines as possible, the molecular species responsible for the absorption, and to verify that current models of infrared transmission match the observed spectra. Archiving is an important part of the program, since a number of the features in the spectra have not been identified. At some later time, when the features are identified, it will be possible to determine the amount of that compound that was present in the atmosphere at the time the spectrum was taken
Classical Phase Fluctuations in Incommensurate Peierls Chains
In the pseudogap regime of one-dimensional incommensurate Peierls systems,
fluctuations of the phase of the order parameter prohibit the emergence of
long-range order and generate a finite correlation length. For classical phase
fluctuations, we present exact results for the average electronic density of
states, the mean localization length, the electronic specific heat and the spin
susceptibility at low temperatures. Our results for the susceptibility give a

Agri-Environmental Policy at the Crossroads: Guideposts on a Changing Landscape
Agri-environmental policy is at a crossroads. Over the past 20 years, a wide range of policies addressing the environmental implications of agricultural production have been implemented at the Federal level. Those policies have played an important role in reducing soil erosion, protecting and restoring wetlands, and creating wildlife habitat. However, emerging agri-environmental issues, evolution of farm income support policies, and limits imposed by trade agreements may point toward a rethinking of agri-environmental policy. This report identifies the types of policy tools available and the design features that have improved the effectiveness of current programs. It provides an indepth analysis of one policy tool that may be an important component of a future policy package-agri-environmental payments. Socio-economic status and lifestyle factors are associated with achalasia risk: a population-based case-control study.
AIM: To evaluate the association between various lifestyle factors and achalasia risk. METHODS: A population-based case-control study was conducted in Northern Ireland, including n = 151 achalasia cases and n = 117 age- and sex-matched controls. Lifestyle factors were assessed via a face-to-face structured interview. The association between achalasia and lifestyle factors was assessed by unconditional logistic regression, to produce odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: Individuals who had low-class occupations were at the highest risk of achalasia (OR = 1.88, 95%CI: 1.02-3.45), inferring that high-class occupation holders have a reduced risk of achalasia. A history of foreign travel, a lifestyle factor linked to upper socio-economic class, was also associated with a reduced risk of achalasia (OR = 0.59, 95%CI: 0.35-0.99). Smoking and alcohol consumption carried significantly reduced risks of achalasia, even after adjustment for socio-economic status. The presence of pets in the house was associated with a two-fold increased risk of achalasia (OR = 2.00, 95%CI: 1.17-3.42). No childhood household factors were associated with achalasia risk. CONCLUSION: Achalasia is a disease of inequality, and individuals from low socio-economic backgrounds are at highest risk. This does not appear to be due to corresponding alcohol and smoking behaviours. An observed positive association between pet ownership and achalasia risk suggests an interaction between endotoxin and viral infection exposure in achalasia aetiology
Finiteness and children with specific language impairment: an exploratory study
Children with specific language impairment (SLI) are well known for their difficulties in mastering the inflectional paradigms; in the case of learning German they also have problems with the appropriate verb position, in particular with the verb in second position. This paper explores the possibilities of applying a broader concept of finiteness to data from children with SLI in order to put their deficits, or rather their skills, into a wider perspective. The concept, as developed by Klein (1998, 2000), suggests that finiteness is tied to the assertion that a certain state of affairs is valid with regard to some topic time; that is, finiteness relates the propositional content to the topic component. Its realization involves the interaction of various grammatical devices and, possibly, lexical means like temporal adverbs. Furthermore, in the acquisition of finiteness it has been found that scope particles play a major role in both first- and second-language learning. The purpose of this paper is to analyze to what extent three German-learning children with SLI have mastered these grammatical and lexical means and to pinpoint the phase in the development of finiteness they have reached. The data to be examined are mostly narrative and taken from conversations and experiments. It will be shown that each child chooses a different developmental path to come to grips with the interaction of these devices
Galactic populations of radio and gamma-ray pulsars in the polar cap model
We simulate the characteristics of the Galactic population of radio and
-ray pulsars using Monte Carlo techniques. At birth, neutron stars are
spatially distributed in the Galactic disk, with supernova-kick velocities, and
randomly dispersed in age back to years. They are evolved in the
Galactic gravitational potential to the present time. From a radio luminosity
model, the radio flux is filtered through a selected set of radio-survey
parameters. -ray luminosities are assigned using the features of recent
polar cap acceleration models invoking space-charge-limited flow, and a pulsar
death valley further attenuates the population of radio-loud pulsars. Assuming
a simple emission geometry with aligned radio and -ray beams of 1
steradian solid angle, our model predicts that EGRET should have seen 7
radio-loud and 1 radio-quiet, -ray pulsars. With much improved
sensitivity, GLAST, on the other hand, is expected to observe 76 radio-loud and
74 radio-quiet, -ray pulsars of which 7 would be identified as pulsed
sources. We also explore the effect of magnetic field decay on the
characteristics of the radio and -ray pulsar populations. Including
magnetic field decay on a timescale of 5 Myr improves agreement with the radio
pulsar population and increases the predicted number of GLAST detected pulsars
to 90 radio-loud and 101 radio-quiet (9 pulsed) -ray pulsars. The lower
flux threshold allows GLAST to detect -ray pulsars at larger distances
