    Comparing teacher roles in Denmark and England

    This article reports the findings of a comparative study of teaching in Denmark and England; its broader aim is to help develop an approach for comparing pedagogy. Lesson observations and interviews identified the range of goals towards which teachers in each country worked and the actions these prompted. These were clustered using the lens of Bernstein’s pedagogic discourse (1990; 1996) to construct teacher roles which provided a view of pedagogy. Through this approach we have begun to identify variations in pedagogy across two countries. All teachers in this study adopted a variety of roles; of significance was the ease with which competent English teachers moved between roles. The English teachers observed adopted roles consistent with a wider techno-rationalist discourse. There was a greater subject emphasis by Danish teachers whose work was set predominantly within a democratic humanist discourse, whilst the English teachers placed a greater emphasis on applied skills

    First-trimester 3-dimensional power Doppler of the uteroplacental circulation space: a potential screening method for preeclampsia

    ObjectiveThe objective of the study was to compare 3-dimensional power Doppler (3DPD) of the uteroplacental circulation space (UPCS) in the first trimester between women who develop preeclampsia (PEC) and those who do not and to assess the 3DPD method as a screening tool for PEC.Study DesignThis was a prospective observational study of singleton pregnancies at 10 weeks 4 days to 13 weeks 6 days. The 3DPD indices, vascularization index (VI), flow index (FI), and vascularization flow index (VFI), were determined on a UPSC sphere biopsy with the virtual organ computer-aided analysis (VOCAL) program.ResultsOf 277 women enrolled, 24 developed PEC. The 3DPD indices were lower in women who developed PEC. The area under the receiver-operating characteristics curve for the prediction of PEC was 78.9%, 77.6%, and 79.6% for VI, FI, and VFI, respectively.ConclusionPatients who develop PEC have lower 3DPD indices of their UPCS during the first trimester. Our findings suggest that this ultrasonographic tool has the potential to predict the development of PEC

    Myo-mechanical Analysis of Isolated Skeletal Muscle

    To assess the in vivo effects of therapeutic interventions for the treatment of muscle disease 1,2,3, quantitative methods are needed that measure force generation and fatigability in treated muscle. We describe a detailed approach to evaluating myo-mechanical properties in freshly explanted hindlimb muscle from the mouse. We describe the atraumatic harvest of mouse extensor digitorum longus muscle, mounting the muscle in a muscle strip myograph (Model 820MS; Danish Myo Technology), and the measurement of maximal twitch and tetanic tension, contraction time, and half-relaxation time, using a square pulse stimulator (Model S48; Grass Technologies). Using these measurements, we demonstrate the calculation of specific twitch and tetanic tension normalized to muscle cross-sectional area, the twitch-to-tetanic tension ratio, the force-frequency relationship curve and the low frequency fatigue curve 4. This analysis provides a method for quantitative comparison between therapeutic interventions in mouse models of muscle disease 1,2,3,5, as well as comparison of the effects of genetic modification on muscle function 6,7,8,9

    Short-Term Impacts of 2017 Western North American Wildfires On Meteorology, the Atmosphere\u27s Energy Budget, and Premature Mortality

    Western North American fires have been increasing in magnitude and severity over the last few decades. The complex coupling of fires with the atmospheric energy budget and meteorology creates short-term feedbacks on regional weather altering the amount of pollution to which Americans are exposed. Using a combination of model simulations and observations, this study shows that the severe fires in the summer of 2017 increased atmospheric aerosol concentrations leading to a cooling of the air at the surface, reductions in sensible heat fluxes, and a lowering of the planetary boundary layer height over land. This combination of lower-boundary layer height and increased aerosol pollution from the fires reduces air quality. We estimate that from start of August to end of October 2017, ~400 premature deaths occurred within the western US as a result of short-term exposure to elevated PM2.5 from fire smoke. As North America confronts a warming climate with more fires the short-term climate and pollution impacts of increased fire activity should be assessed within policy aimed to minimize impacts of climate change on society

    Finding Apparent Horizons in Dynamic 3D Numerical Spacetimes

    We have developed a general method for finding apparent horizons in 3D numerical relativity. Instead of solving for the partial differential equation describing the location of the apparent horizons, we expand the closed 2D surfaces in terms of symmetric trace--free tensors and solve for the expansion coefficients using a minimization procedure. Our method is applied to a number of different spacetimes, including numerically constructed spacetimes containing highly distorted axisymmetric black holes in spherical coordinates, and 3D rotating, and colliding black holes in Cartesian coordinates.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, LaTex, to appear in Phys.     Three dimensional numerical relativity: the evolution of black holes

    We report on a new 3D numerical code designed to solve the Einstein equations for general vacuum spacetimes. This code is based on the standard 3+1 approach using cartesian coordinates. We discuss the numerical techniques used in developing this code, and its performance on massively parallel and vector supercomputers. As a test case, we present evolutions for the first 3D black hole spacetimes. We identify a number of difficulties in evolving 3D black holes and suggest approaches to overcome them. We show how special treatment of the conformal factor can lead to more accurate evolution, and discuss techniques we developed to handle black hole spacetimes in the absence of symmetries. Many different slicing conditions are tested, including geodesic, maximal, and various algebraic conditions on the lapse. With current resolutions, limited by computer memory sizes, we show that with certain lapse conditions we can evolve the black hole to about t=50Mt=50M, where MM is the black hole mass. Comparisons are made with results obtained by evolving spherical initial black hole data sets with a 1D spherically symmetric code. We also demonstrate that an ``apparent horizon locking shift'' can be used to prevent the development of large gradients in the metric functions that result from singularity avoiding time slicings. We compute the mass of the apparent horizon in these spacetimes, and find that in many cases it can be conserved to within about 5\% throughout the evolution with our techniques and current resolution.Comment: 35 pages, LaTeX with RevTeX 3.0 macros. 27 postscript figures taking 7 MB of space, uuencoded and gz-compressed into a 2MB uufile.     Radiation recoil from highly distorted black holes

    We present results from numerical evolutions of single black holes distorted by axisymmetric, but equatorially asymmetric, gravitational (Brill) waves. Net radiated energies, apparent horizon embeddings, and recoil velocities are shown for a range of Brill wave parameters, including both even and odd parity distortions of Schwarzschild black holes. We find that a wave packet initially concentrated on the black hole throat, a likely model also for highly asymmetric stellar collapse and late stage binary mergers, can generate a maximum recoil velocity of about 150 (23) km/sec for even (odd) parity perturbations, significantly less than that required to eject black holes from galactic cores.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure
