    Homogeneous Photometry VI: Variable Stars in the Leo I Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

    We have characterized the pulsation properties of 164 candidate RR Lyrae variables (RRLs) and 55 candidate Anomalous and/or short-period Cepheids in Leo I dwarf spheroidal galaxy. On the basis of its RRLs Leo I is confirmed to be an Oosterhoff-intermediate type galaxy, like several other dwarfs. We show that in their pulsation properties, the RRLs representing the oldest stellar population in the galaxy are not significantly different from those of five other nearby, isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies. A similar result is obtained when comparing them to RR Lyrae stars in recently discovered ultra-faint dwarf galaxies. We are able to compare the period distributions and period-amplitude relations for a statistically significant sample of ab type RR Lyrae stars in dwarf galaxies (~1300stars) with those in the Galactic halo field (~14,000stars) and globular clusters (~1000stars). Field RRLs show a significant change in their period distribution when moving from the inner (dG14kpc) halo regions. This suggests that the halo formed from (at least) two dissimilar progenitors or types of progenitor. Considered together, the RRLs in classical dwarf spheroidal and ultra-faint dwarf galaxies-as observed today-do not appear to follow the well defined pulsation properties shown by those in either the inner or the outer Galactic halo, nor do they have the same properties as RRLs in globular clusters. In particular, the samples of fundamental-mode RRLs in dwarfs seem to lack High Amplitudes and Short Periods ("HASP":AV>1.0mag and P <0.48d) when compared with those observed in the Galactic halo field and globular clusters. The observed properties of RRLs do not support the idea that currently existing classical dwarf spheroidal and ultra-faint dwarf galaxies are surviving representative examples of the original building blocks of the Galactic halo.Comment: 49 pages in referee format, 12 figure

    Reactome - a knowledgebase of human biological pathways

    Pathway curation is a powerful tool for systematically associating gene products with functions. Reactome (www.reactome.org) is a manually curated human pathway knowledgebase describing a wide range of biological processes in a computationally accessible manner. The core unit of the Reactome data model is the Reaction, whose instances form a network of biological interactions through entities that are consumed, produced, or act as catalysts. Entities are distinguished by their molecular identities and cellular locations. Set objects allow grouping of related entities. Curation is based on communication between expert authors and staff curators, facilitated by freely available data entry tools. Manually curated data are subjected to quality control and peer review by a second expert. Reactome data are released quarterly. At release time, electronic orthology inference performed on human data produces reaction predictions in 22 species ranging from mouse to bacteria. Cross-references to a large number of publicly available databases are attached, providing multiple entry points into the database. The Reactome Mart allows query submission and data retrieval from Reactome and across other databases. The SkyPainter tool provides visualization and statistical analysis of user supplied data, e.g. from microarray experiments.     The RR Lyrae variables and Horizontal Branch of NGC6656 (M22)

    The first calibrated broadband UBVI time-series photometry is presented for the RR Lyrae variable stars in NGC6656 (M22), with observations spanning a range of twenty-two years. We have also redetermined the variability types and periods for the RR Lyrae stars identified previously by photographic observations, revising the number of fundamental-mode RR Lyrae variables (RR0) to 10 and the number of first-overtone variables (RR1) to 16. The mean periods of the RR0 and RR1 variables are _{RR0}=0.66 \pm 0.02 d and _{RR1}=0.33 \pm 0.01 d, respectively, supporting an Oosterhoff II classification for the cluster. The number ratio of RR1- to all RR-type variables is N_1/N_{RR}=0.61, also consistent with an Oosterhoff II designation. Both the RR Lyrae stars' minimum light colors and the blue edge of the RR Lyrae instability strip suggest E(B-V)=0.36 \pm 0.02 mag toward M22. Regarding the HB morphology of M22, we find (B-R)/(B+V+R)=+0.97 \pm 0.1 and at least one "gap" located in an unusual part of the blue HB, in the middle of the so-called hot HB stars.Comment: accepted to A

    Systematic Review of Efficacy and Health Economic Implications of Real-world Treatment Sequencing in Prostate Cancer:Where Do the Newer Agents Enzalutamide and Abiraterone Fit in?

    Context: Optimal treatment sequencing of abiraterone and enzalutamide in chemotherapy-naïve metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) is challenging. Real-world data (RWD) allow a better understanding of health economic implications in the real world. Objective: To determine survival and cost outcomes for two real-world treatment sequences, comparing abiraterone to enzalutamide (AA → ENZ) with enzalutamide to abiraterone (ENZ → AA). Evidence acquisition: A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Searches were performed in Medline, Embase, and Web of Science. Evidence synthesis: Seventeen studies met our inclusion criteria. Of studies with survival outcomes, 10 featured AA → ENZ treatment sequences (n = 575), four ENZ → AA sequences (n = 205), and three both sequences. Better survival outcomes were demonstrated in the AA → ENZ cohorts in several studies reporting prostate-specific antigen (PSA) progression-free survival (PSA-PFS), combined PSA-PFS, and PSA decline ≥50%. Three studies showed shorter treatment duration in cohorts receiving second-line enzalutamide compared with abiraterone. Collectively, six RWD costing studies described patients with mCRPC who experienced treatment with enzalutamide (n = 4195), abiraterone (n = 10 372), AA → ENZ (n = 443), and ENZ → AA (n = 91). No study estimated the cost of treatment sequencing of AA → ENZ or ENZ → AA. Conclusions: No head-to-head studies were found, but we hypothesise that the AA → ENZ sequence may be less costly than ENZ → AA, because time on treatment tends to be longer for a first-line treatment and abiraterone is less costly than enzalutamide. There are indications that overall survival of AA → ENZ is superior to that of ENZ → AA, which supports the former sequence as more cost effective. Patient summary: Better survival outcomes were reported in several studies where patients with advanced prostate cancer received the abiraterone to enzalutamide sequence compared with the enzalutamide to abiraterone sequence. No study estimated the cost of sequencing either treatment approach.</p

    Dark halo structure in the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy: joint analysis of multiple stellar components

    Photometric and spectroscopic observations of the Carina dSph revealed that this galaxy contains two dominant stellar populations of different age and kinematics. The co-existence of multiple populations provides new constraints on the dark halo structure of the galaxy, because different populations should be in equilibrium in the same dark matter potential well. We develop non-spherical dynamical models including such multiple stellar components and attempt to constrain the properties of the non-spherical dark halo of Carina. We find that Carina probably has a larger and denser dark halo than found in previous works and a less cuspy inner dark matter density profile, even though the uncertainties of dark halo parameters are still large due to small volume of data sample. Using our fitting results, we evaluate astrophysical factors for dark matter annihilation and decay and find that Carina should be one of the most promising detectable targets among classical dSph galaxies. We also calculate stellar velocity anisotropy profiles for both stellar populations and find that they are both radially anisotropic in the inner regions, while in the outer regions the older population becomes more tangentially biased than the intermediate one. This is consistent with the anisotropy predicted from tidal effects on the dynamical structure of a satellite galaxy and thereby can be considered as kinematic evidence for the tidal evolution of Carina.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures and 3 tables.     Stellar photometry with Multi Conjugate Adaptive Optics

    We overview the current status of photometric analyses of images collected with Multi Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) at 8-10m class telescopes that operated, or are operating, on sky. Particular attention will be payed to resolved stellar population studies. Stars in crowded stellar systems, such as globular clusters or in nearby galaxies, are ideal test particles to test AO performance. We will focus the discussion on photometric precision and accuracy reached nowadays. We briefly describe our project on stellar photometry and astrometry of Galactic globular clusters using images taken with GeMS at the Gemini South telescope. We also present the photometry performed with DAOPHOT suite of programs into the crowded regions of these globulars reaching very faint limiting magnitudes Ks ~21.5 mag on moderately large fields of view (~1.5 arcmin squared). We highlight the need for new algorithms to improve the modeling of the complex variation of the Point Spread Function across the field of view. Finally, we outline the role that large samples of stellar standards plays in providing a detailed description of the MCAO performance and in precise and accurate colour{magnitude diagrams.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, SPIE 201

    Deficits in episodic future thinking following acute alcohol consumption

    Rationale Acute alcohol consumption adversely affects many cognitive abilities, including episodic memory and executive functioning. However, no study to date has tested whether these acute effects of alcohol also extend to episodic future thinking (EFT). This is a surprising omission given that EFT refers to the ability to imagine oneself experiencing the future, a highly adaptive ability that has been implicated in many important functional behaviours. EFT is also thought to impose demands on episodic memory and executive control. Objectives The current study was designed to provide the first test of whether a moderate dose of alcohol influences EFT and whether any observed EFT difficulties are secondary to broader problems in episodic memory and executive functioning. Sex differences in EFT following acute alcohol consumption were also examined. Methods One hundred and twenty-four healthy adult social drinkers were recruited and randomly assigned to either the alcohol (n = 61) or placebo (n = 63) condition. Participants were administered a dose of 0.6 g/kg alcohol or a matched placebo drink. Results Relative to the placebo condition, EFT was impaired by acute alcohol consumption. This impairment was underpinned by broader difficulties with episodic memory, but not executive functioning. There were no sex differences in EFT performance following acute alcohol use. Conclusion These data provide novel insights into the effects of acute alcohol consumption on EFT and the broader cognitive mechanisms that contribute to these difficulties. The results are discussed in relation to their implications for understanding many of the maladaptive behaviours commonly associated with acute alcohol use
