Power Quality Improvement of a Distribution Network for Sustainable Power Supply

This paper presents a heuristic technique for improving power quality of a distribution network for sustainable electric power supply using shunt capacitor placement. The issue of power loss has been a major threat to a distribution network. A distribution network is expected to operate at certain voltage level to meet consumer’s energy demand. Power flow studies has been conducted using the Newton Raphson’s technique at the 30 bus, 11 kV Onuiyi-Nsukka distribution network. It was found that the voltage profile at buses 19 and 26 were critically violated with voltage amplitudes of 0.72 pu and 0.79 pu respectively. The feeder power quality was improved using a heuristic technique and the installation of a 1200KVAr shunt capacitor to keep bus voltage amplitudes within the legal limit of (0.95-1.05) pu. The voltage profile, active and reactive power losses on the network were determined. Active power loss and reactive power loss was reduced from 0.27MW to 0.12MW and 0.76Mvar to 0.14Mvar, respectively. Therefore, the voltage profile is enhanced and the power loss significantly reduced

A comprehensive review of recent developments in smart grid through renewable energy resources integration

    No full text
Energy generation and management are relevant for both utilities and electricity users, and they can be improved by incorporating sophisticated technology on smart grid. This opens up the possibility of transforming existing industries into a new era of enhanced networks that will give an intelligent, responsive, and bi-directional automatic management system for power generation, transmission, and distribution. The traditional grid is transitioning from a centralized generation structure to a more dispersed smart grid structure. In order to build this new decentralized structure, loads must be fully integrated into the grid and adequately separated from the main grid. The smart grid allows for the integration of loads that are clean, cost-effective, and efficient. The growing level of distributed generation (DG) integration puts the grid under strain, resulting in perturbations with dynamic responses. This paper discussed a detailed review of current developments in smart grid through the integration of renewable energy resources (RERs) into the grid. The purpose of this study is to present a comprehensive, up-to-date review of RERs integration on grid to evaluate research directions, progress, challenges, and potential solutions. It focuses on the concepts and structure of smart grids, followed by an in-depth examination of smart grid overview, energy sources, inertia issues, and applications. This evaluation will assist other researchers investigating smart grid energy resources in identifying research problems and gaps

Implementation of a radio frequency identification and detectiontechnology based digital class attendance system for university students

Class attendance is a key consideration when assigning final marks for courses taught, student attendance is a critical issue for higher institutions. Some institutions choose to regulate attendance with paper sheets, while others prefer to verify students' attendance with paper sheets and then manually enter this information into a computer. This mode of taking students attendance delays time and reduces the time needed for the lecture to be delivered. A system that eases the burden of time delay in taking attendance, promotes the universities, and supports parents is presented in this paper. The radio frequency identification and detection (RFID) student monitoring system has been developed to track student’s attendance in the classroom using passive RFID technology. The system uses an RFID reader and a contactless smart card to ensure time management during student’s attendance. A reader at a fixed place delivers a signal to a passive RFID chip for detection and identifies a huge number of chips in a short amount of time. The biometric thumb detection module for security was applied to improve the system. The applied enhanced technology sends a message to the parent of any students that fails to attend lectures

Comprehensive Review of Renewable Energy Communication Modeling for Smart Systems

    No full text
Due to the rising trends in the adoption of smart systems such as smart grids, smart homes, and vehicle-to-grid, there has been a lot of research interest in these areas. To manage these complex systems effectively and intelligently, a reliable, high-speed, and secure data communication network is very essential. The key distinguishing feature between smart systems and traditional ones is that smart systems use a two-way communication system while traditional systems usually use one-way communication. The requirements and techniques needed to ensure safe, secure, and reliable communication in smart systems have been the focus of many researchers in recent times. This work is aimed at providing a comprehensive, all-encompassing, up-to-date review of smart systems communication to ascertain the research directions as well as challenges. This review will guide other researchers in delving into smart systems communication to identify potential research problems and future research directions or research gaps
