    Influence of Fermi surface topology on the quasiparticle spectrum in the vortex state

    We study the influence of Fermi surface topology on the quasiparticle density of states in the vortex state of type II superconductors. We observe that the field dependence and the shape of the momentum and spatially averaged density of states is affected significantly by the topology of the Fermi surface. We show that this behavior can be understood in terms of characteristic Fermi surface functions and that an important role is played by the number of points on the Fermi surface at which the Fermi velocity is directed parallel to the magnetic field. A critical comparison is made with a broadened BCS type density of states, that has been used frequently in analysis of tunneling data. We suggest a new formula as a replacement for the broadened BCS model for the special case of a cylindrical Fermi surface. We apply our results to the two gap superconductor MgB2_2 and show that in this particular case the field dependence of the partial densities of states of the two gaps behaves very differently due to the different topologies of the corresponding Fermi surfaces, in qualitative agreement with recent tunneling experiments.Comment: 12 pages 12 figure

    Inactive lifestyle in adults with bilateral spastic cerebral palsy

    Objective: To quantify the level of everyday physical activity in adults with bilateral spastic cerebral palsy, and to study associations with personal and cerebral palsy-related characteristics. Participants and methods: Fifty-six adults with bilateral spastic cerebral palsy (mean age 36.4 (standard deviation (SD) 5.8) years, 62% male) participated in the study. Approximately 75% had high gross motor functioning. Level of everyday physical activity was measured with an accelerometry-based Activity Monitor and was characterized by: (i) duration of dynamic activities (composite measure, percentage of 24 h); (ii) intensity of activity (motility, in gravitational acceleration (g)); and (iii) number of periods of continuous dynamic activity. Outcomes in adults with cerebral palsy were compared with those for able-bodied age-mates. Results: Duration of dynamic activities was 8.1 (SD 3.7) % (116 min per day), and intensity of activity was 0.020 (SD 0.007) g; both outcomes were significantly lower compared with able-bodied age-mates. Of adults with cerebral palsy, 39% had at least one period of continuous dynamic activities lasting longer than 10 min per day. Gross motor functioning was significantly associated with level of everyday physical activity (Rs -0.34 to -0.48; p≤0.01). Conclusion: Adults with bilateral spastic cerebral palsy, especially those with low-level gross motor functioning, are at risk for an inactive lifestyle

    . Contemporary developments of on-board systems for automatic or semi-automatic driving include car collision avoidance. For this purpose two worst case approaches based on pursuit-evasion differential games are compared. On a freeway a correct driver (evader) is faced with a wrong driver (pursuer) ahead. The correct driver tries to avoid collision against all possible wrong driver's maneuvers and additionally tries to stay on the freeway. The representation of an optimal collision avoidance strategy along a lot of optimal paths is used to synthesize implementations with neural networks.
