    The Globular Cluster Luminosity Function as a Distance Indicator: Dynamical Effects

    The dynamical evolution of the globular cluster systems in galaxies is predicted, based on the standard dynamical theory normalized to the example of the Milky Way. The major processes varying with the galactocentric distance are the tidal shocks and dynamical friction. Our simple model explains, on a quantitative basis, the observed differences of the inner and outer populations of globular clusters. We can thus calculate corrections for dynamical evolution for the luminosity function of globular clusters with the assumption that the initial luminosity function is identical in all galaxies (and we can test this assumption as well, in certain cases). Then we can compute the expected distribution of absolute magnitudes and compare it with the observed distribution of apparent magnitudes to estimate the distance moduli for M31 and M87. Using this new method we find dm(M31)=24.05 +- 0.23, dm(M87)=30.83 +- 0.17, as compared to current best estimates using other methods of dm(M31)=24.30 +- 0.20, dm(M87)=31.0 +- 0.1. As a check on the method we compute, and compare with observations, the differences between the inner and outer globular clusters in all three galaxies. This new method, coupled with HST observations, promises to provide an independent method of estimating distances to galaxies with recession velocities < 10,000 km/s, or D < 100 Mpc.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures; submitted to ApJ Letter

    Introduction: Proper oral hygiene and diet are important considerations for success in implant prosthodontics. However, detailed hygienic and dietetic guidelines for patients rehabilitated with implant-supported, immediate loading prostheses are lacking in the literature. Methods: The authors have developed a dietary and hygienic protocol for patients rehabilitated with implant-supported, full-arch, immediate loading prostheses in order to avoid occlusal overloads during osseointegration and optimize healing. Results: The dietary and hygienic guidelines provided in this paper emphasize the importance of maintaining proper oral hygiene and diet to support osseointegration and soft tissue healing during postsurgery healing periods. Conclusions: The protocol presented has been an effective instrument to obtain and maintain osseointegration in patients rehabilitated with full-arch, immediate loading prostheses

    Resonance Raman scattering is used to determine the radial breathing mode (RBM) frequency (ωRBM) dependence on tube diameter (dt) for single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). We establish experimentally the ωRBM=227.0/dt as the fundamental relation for pristine SWNTs.     Stem-like and highly invasive prostate cancer cells expressing CD44v8-10 marker originate from CD44-negative cells

    In human prostate cancer (PCa), the neuroendocrine cells, expressing the prostate cancer stem cell (CSC) marker CD44, may be resistant to androgen ablation and promote tumor recurrence. During the study of heterogeneity of the highly aggressive neuroendocrine PCa cell lines PC3 and DU-145, we isolated and expanded in vitro a minor subpopulation of very small cells lacking CD44 (CD44neg). Unexpectedly, these sorted CD44neg cells rapidly and spontaneously converted to a stable CD44high phenotype specifically expressing the CD44v8-10 isoform which the sorted CD44high subpopulation failed to express. Surprisingly and potentially interesting, in these cells expression of CD44v8-10 was found to be induced in stem cell medium. CD44 variant isoforms are known to be more expressed in CSC and metastatic cells than CD44 standard isoform. In agreement, functional analysis of the two sorted and cultured subpopulations has shown that the CD44v8-10pos PC3 cells, resulting from the conversion of the CD44neg subpopulation, were more invasive in vitro and had a higher clonogenic potential than the sorted CD44high cells, in that they produced mainly holoclones, known to be enriched in stem-like cells. Of interest, the CD44v8-10 is more expressed in human PCa biopsies than in normal gland. The discovery of CD44v8-10pos cells with stem-like and invasive features, derived from a minoritarian CD44neg cell population in PCa, alerts on the high plasticity of stem-like markers and urges for prudency on the approaches to targeting the putative CSC

    Merging of globular clusters within inner galactic regions. I. Do they survive the tidal interaction?

    The main topic of this paper is the investigation of the modes of interaction of globular clusters (GCs) moving in the inner part of a galaxy. This is tackled by means of high-resolution N-body simulations, whose first results are presented in this article. Our simulations dealt with primordial very massive (order of 10^7 solar masses) GCs that were able to decay, because of dynamical friction, into the inner regions of triaxial galaxies on a time much shorter than their internal relaxation time. To check the disruptive role of both tidal forces and GC-GC collisions, we maximised the tidal interaction considering GCs on quasi-radial orbits. The available CPU resources allowed us to follow 8 oscillations of the GCs along their orbits and the main findings are: i) clusters with an initial high enough King concentration parameter (c>=1.2), preserve up to 50% of their initial mass; ii) the inner density distribution of the survived clusters keep a King model profile; iii) GC-GC collisions have a negligible effect with respect to that caused by the passage through the galactic center; iv) the orbital energy dissipation due to the tidal interaction is of the same order of that caused by dynamical friction; v) complex sub-structures like "ripples" and "clumps" formed, as observed around real clusters. These findings support the validity of the hypothesis of merging of GCs in the galactic central region, with modes that deserve further careful investigations.Comment: LaTeX 2e, AASTeX v5.x, 23 pages with 14 figures.     Ferrous Campylobacter jejuni truncated hemoglobin P displays an extremely high reactivity for cyanide - A comparative study

    Campylobacter jejuni hosts two hemoglobins (Hbs). The Camplylobacter jejuni single-domain Hb (called Cgb) is homologous to the globin domain of flavohemoglobin, and it has been proposed to protect the bacterium against nitrosative stress. The second Hb is called Ctb (hereafter Cj-trHbP), belongs to truncated Hb group III, and has been hypothesized to be involved in O 2 chemistry. Here, the kinetics and thermodynamics of cyanide binding to ferric and ferrous Cj-trHbP [Cj-trHbP(III) and Cj-trHbP(II), respectively] are reported and analyzed in parallel with those of related heme proteins, with particular reference to those from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The affinity of cyanide for Cj-trHbP(II) is higher than that reported for any known (in)vertebrate globin by more than three orders of magnitude (K = 1.2 × 10-6 m). This can be fully attributed to the highest (ever observed for a ferrous Hb) cyanide-binding association rate constant (kon = 3.3 × 103 m-1·s-1), even though the binding process displays a rate-limiting step (kmax = 9.1 s -1). Cj-trHbP(III) shows a very high affinity for cyanide (L = 5.8 × 10-9 m); however, cyanide association kinetics are independent of cyanide concentration, displaying a rate-limiting step (l max = 2.0 × 10-3 s-1). Values of the first-order rate constant for cyanide dissociation from Cj-trHbP(II)-cyanide and Cj-trHbP(III)-cyanide (koff =5.0 × 10-3 s -1 and loff ù‰„ 1 × 10-4 s-1, respectively) are similar to those reported for (in)vertebrate globins. The very high affinity of cyanide for Cj-trHbP(II), reminiscent of that of horseradish peroxidase(II), suggests that this globin may participate in cyanide detoxification. © 2008 The Authors

    Plasma-arc-flow technology for sustainable treatment of high-impact fluid waste. A graphene-based material for industrial-wastewater purification

    The research presented aimed to address the treatment of fluid waste with significant environmental impact by utilizing plasma technology, specifically plasma arc flow (PAF). The goal was to develop a novel purification material based on graphene for industrial applications and to optimize the treatment process. Analysis and monitoring of a submerged arc plasma reactor were the main goals of this research. This entailed a careful examination of the incoming wastewater that needed to be treated with the goal of identifying its precise composition characteristics with the relative tolerances needed for the reactions that were to follow in the reactor. The focus of the analysis was on input-parameter optimization, production of characteristic curves, and analysis of the factors affecting hydrogen evolution in syngas. Additionally, the study investigated how to determine the best viscosity for a particular input matrix by carrying out an evaluation study. The effects of this parameter were thought to be reduced by preheating the incoming wastewater through heat recovery. The long-term objective of the research is to create filters that can purify the water used and produced in gasification processes as well as to characterize the fixed reside from the gasifier for potential conversion into graphene-based material. In addition, this work acknowledges that additional experiments are required to validate its purifying capacity on wastewater produced by various industrial processes. Moreover, the inclusion of plans to model the evolution of hydrogen in PAF using the CHEMCAD software¼ and defining guidelines for optimizing parameters for enhanced energy efficiency showcased the research’s ambition to expand and refine its scope. Finding the best plant solutions that can significantly reduce electricity consumption is the ultimate goal. In summary, the study demonstrated significant advancement in the analysis and optimization of fluid-waste treatment with high environmental impact through the use of plasma technology, specifically PAF. A thorough and forward-looking approach was demonstrated by the use of modeling software, experimental studies, and plans for future research. The potential creation of graphene-based filters and the use of the fixed residue as a useful material further highlight the innovativeness of this research

    Description of Atmospheric Conditions at the Pierre Auger Observatory Using Meteorological Measurements and Models

    Atmospheric conditions at the site of a cosmic ray observatory must be known well for reconstructing observed extensive air showers, especially when measured using the fluorescence technique. For the Pierre Auger Observatory, a sophisticated network of atmospheric monitoring devices has been conceived. Part of this monitoring was a weather balloon program to measure atmospheric state variables above the Observatory. To use the data in reconstructions of air showers, monthly models have been constructed. Scheduled balloon launches were abandoned and replaced with launches triggered by high-energetic air showers as part of a rapid monitoring system. Currently, the balloon launch program is halted and atmospheric data from numerical weather prediction models are used. A description of the balloon measurements, the monthly models as well as the data from the numerical weather prediction are presented

    We present the case of a 18-year-old female with fulminant lymphocytic myocarditis caused by Parvovirus B19 (PVB19), successfully treated using temporary LVAD. In the literature there is no consensus on the surgical strategy. While some surgeons prefer to use a single device supporting only the LV, others prefer to start immediately with a biventricular supporting. At pre-procedural ultrasound evaluation, her anatomical features were not suitable for a percutaneous device such as the Impella. Thus, a temporary paracorporeal continuous flow LVAD was inserted. The heart recovery allowed LVAD removal 9 days after the implant

    Ultraviolet and Multiwavelength Variability of the Blazar 3C 279: Evidence for Thermal Emission

    The gamma-ray blazar 3C 279 was monitored on a nearly daily basis with IUE, ROSAT and EGRET for three weeks between December 1992 and January 1993. During this period, the blazar was at a historical minimum at all wavelengths. Here we present the UV data obtained during the above multiwavelength campaign. A maximum UV variation of ~50% is detected, while during the same period the X-ray flux varied by no more than 13%. At the lowest UV flux level the average spectrum in the 1230-2700 A interval is unusually flat for this object (~1). The flattening could represent the lowest energy tail of the inverse Compton component responsible for the X-ray emission, or could be due to the presence of a thermal component at ~20000 K possibly associated with an accretion disk. The presence of an accretion disk in this blazar object, likely observable only in very low states and otherwise hidden by the beamed, variable synchrotron component, would be consistent with the scenario in which the seed photons for the inverse Compton mechanism producing the gamma-rays are external to the relativistic jet. We further discuss the long term correlation of the UV flux with the X-ray and gamma-ray fluxes obtained at various epochs. All UV archival data are included in the analysis. Both the X- and gamma-ray fluxes are generally well correlated with the UV flux, approximately with square root and quadratic dependences, respectively.Comment: 22 pages, Latex, 7 PostScript figures, to appear in The Astrophysical Journa
