Motivation and job satisfaction among medical and nursing staff in a Cyprus public general hospital
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The objective of this study was to investigate how medical and nursing staff of the Nicosia General Hospital is affected by specific motivation factors, and the association between <it>job satisfaction </it>and <it>motivation</it>. Furthermore, to determine the motivational drive of socio-demographic and job related factors in terms of improving work performance.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A previously developed and validated instrument addressing four work-related motivators (<it>job attributes, remuneration, co-workers and achievements</it>) was used. Two categories of health care professionals, medical doctors and dentists (N = 67) and nurses (N = 219) participated and motivation and job satisfaction was compared across socio-demographic and occupational variables.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The survey revealed that <it>achievements </it>was ranked first among the four main motivators, followed by <it>remuneration</it>, <it>co-workers </it>and <it>job attributes</it>. The factor <it>remuneration </it>revealed statistically significant differences according to gender, and hospital sector, with female doctors and nurses and accident and emergency (A+E) outpatient doctors reporting greater mean scores (p < 0.005). The medical staff showed statistically significantly lower job satisfaction compared to the nursing staff. Surgical sector nurses and those >55 years of age reported higher job satisfaction when compared to the other groups.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results are in agreement with the literature which focuses attention to management approaches employing both monetary and non-monetary incentives to motivate health care professionals. Health care professionals tend to be motivated more by intrinsic factors, implying that this should be a target for effective employee motivation. Strategies based on the survey's results to enhance employee motivation are suggested.</p
Professional environment and patient safety in emergency departments

The purpose of this study was to examine nurses' and physicians' perceptions of professional environment and its association with patient safety in public emergency departments in Cyprus. A total of 224 professionals (174 nurses and 50 physicians) participated (rr = 81%). Data were collected using the "Revised Professional Practice Environment" (RPPE) instrument and the Safety Climate Domain of the "Emergency Medical Services Safety Attitudes Questionnaire" (EMS-SAQ). The mean overall score of RPPE was 2.79 (SD = 0.30), among physicians 2.84 (SD = 0.25) and nurses 2.73 (SD = 0.33) (P-value = 0.07). Statistically significant differences were observed between the two study groups regarding "staff relationships", "motivation" and "cultural sensitivity" (P-values < 0.05). No significant differences were observed as regards EMS-SAQ (3.25 vs. 3.16 respectively; P-value = 0.28). All 8 components of the RPPE exhibited significant association with patient safety. Linear and stepwise regression analyses showed that "leadership" explains 28% of the variance of safety. This relationship suggests improvements in professional environment with the ultimate goal of improving patient safety
Translation and Validation of the Revised Professional Practice Environment Questionnaire in the Greek Language
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:
Professional practice environments have been correlated with quality of care, patient, and nurse outcomes. There is a lack of translated versions of established instruments such as the Revised Professional Practice Environment questionnaire and this study presents the validation of this questionnaire in Greek.
METHODS:
Translation, cultural adaptation, and factor analysis of the instrument were carried out. Three hundred ninety-three nurses from 5 hospitals of the Republic of Cyprus completed the instrument.
RESULTS:
A 7-factor solution with 39 items accounted for 55.03% variance. The overall Cronbach's alpha was .89 and ranged between .69 and .84 for the individual factors.
CONCLUSIONS:
The testing of the translated version of the RPPE into Greek provides support for the validity and internal consistency of the instrument
Temporal trends in stroke incidence and case-fatality rates in Arcadia, Greece:A sequential, prospective, population-based study
Background: Stroke incidence and case-fatality are reported to decline in high-income countries during the last decades. Epidemiological studies are important for health services to organize prevention and treatment strategies. Aims: The aim of this population-based study was to determine temporal trends of stroke incidence and case-fatality rates of first-ever stroke in Arcadia, a prefecture in southern Greece. Methods: All first-ever stroke cases in the Arcadia prefecture were ascertained using the same standard criteria and multiple overlapping sources in three study periods: from November 1993 to October 1995; 2004; and 2015–2016. Crude and age-adjusted to European population incidence rates were compared using Poisson regression. Twenty-eight days case fatality rates were estimated and compared using the same method. Results: In total, 1315 patients with first-ever stroke were identified. The age-standardized incidence to the European population was 252 per 100,000 person-years (95% CI 231–239) in 1993/1995, 252 (95% CI 223–286) in 2004, and 211 (192–232) in 2015/2016. The overall age- and sex-adjusted incidence rates fell by 16% (incidence rates ratio 0.84, 95% CI: 0.72–0.97). Similarly, 28-day case-fatality rate decreased by 28% (case fatality rate ratio = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.58–0.90). Conclusions: This population-based study reports a significant decline in stroke incidence and mortality rates in southern Greece between 1993 and 2016
