Cobalamin inactivation induces formyltetrahydrofolate synthetase

AbstractLoss of cobalamin function produces profound changes in the metabolism of formate. There is impaired synthesis of formyltetrahydropteroylglutamate synthetase (CHO-H4,PteGlu), accumulation of endogenous formate and impaired utilization of [14C]formate. There are contradictory reports on the effect of cobalamin inactivation on CHO-H4PteGlu synthetase. This study confirms a significant increase in synthetase activity following cobalamin inactivation

Using physical barriers to prevent carrot fly (Psila rosae (Fabricius)) damage in domestic production

A field experiment was used to assess the effectiveness of different barriers in protecting garden‐scale carrot production from carrot fly (Psila rosae (Fabricius)) damage. Some of the vertical barriers tested were found to provide a useful method of protecting early season carrots from carrot fly in terms of the percentage of carrots free from damage but, under cumulative pest pressure of several generations of carrot fly, such barriers were found to provide insufficient protection. Gardeners should therefore completely cover their carrot crop to attain an acceptable level of control, and this was found to be especially important for carrots harvested later in the season. There were positive effects of some barrier types on yield which may be due, at least in part, to the protection given by the barriers to carrot seedlings

Carcass Traits and Palatability Attributes of Herdmates Finished as Calves or Yearling Steers

A two-year study compared steers from the same herd finished as calves or yearlings at a fat thickness endpoint of 0.5 in. Yearlings yielded heavier carcasses with larger ribeye areas, lower marbling scores and lower quality grades. Calves produced more tender steaks measured by shear force and a consumer taste panel. The probability of a tough steak (based on shear force) from calf-fed steers was 1.9 and 0.02% for 7 and 21 days of aging, respectively, while the risk for yearlings was 29.2 and 4.0%, respectively. Calf-fed steers produced more tender steaks and, after 21 days of aging, steaks from yearlings were similar
