    A Riemann-Roch Theorem For One-Dimensional Complex Groupoids

We consider a smooth groupoid of the form \Sigma\rtimes\Gamma where \Sigma is a Riemann surface and \Gamma a discrete pseudogroup acting on \Sigma by local conformal diffeomorphisms. After defining a K-cycle on the crossed product C_0(\Sigma)\rtimes\Gamma generalising the classical Dolbeault complex, we compute its Chern character in cyclic cohomology, using the index theorem of Connes and Moscovici. This involves in particular a generalisation of the Euler class constructed from the modular automorphism group of the von Neumann algebra L^{\infty}(\Sigma)\rtimes\Gamma.Comment: 20 pages, LaTex, minor change

Classical Representation of a Quantum System at Equilibrium

A quantum system at equilibrium is represented by a corresponding classical system, chosen to reproduce the thermodynamic and structural properties. The objective is to develop a means for exploiting strong coupling classical methods (e.g., MD, integral equations, DFT) to describe quantum systems. The classical system has an effective temperature, local chemical potential, and pair interaction that are defined by requiring equivalence of the grand potential and its functional derivatives with respect to the external and pair potentials for the classical and quantum systems. Practical inversion of this mapping for the classical properties is effected via the hypernetted chain approximation, leading to representations as functionals of the quantum pair correlation function. As an illustration, the parameters of the classical system are determined approximately such that ideal gas and weak coupling RPA limits are preserved

The Vittel Payments for Ecosystem Services: A Perfect PES Case?

This paper describes and analyses the PES programme developed and implemented by Vittel (Nestlé Waters) in north-eastern France. In order to address the risk of nitrate contamination caused by agricultural intensification in the aquifer, the world leader in the mineral water bottling business is financing farmers in the catchment to change their farming practices and technology. The paper examines the methodology used by Vittel, and the tenyear process that was necessary to transform conflict into a successful partnership. The paper's main conclusion is that establishing PES is a very complex undertaking, one that requires the consideration of scientific but also social, economic, political, institutional, and power relationships. The ability to maintain farmers' income level at all times and finance all technological changes was an important element of success, but primary reasons for the programme's success were not financial. Trust-building through the creation of an intermediary institution (locally based and led by a "champion" sympathetic to the farmers' cause); the development of a long-term participatory process to identify alternative practices and a mutually acceptable set of incentives; the ability to link incentives to land tenure and debt cycle issues and to substitute the old technical and social support networks with new ones, were all fundamental conditions of success

The Role of Firms in Energy Transformation

This paper looks at the role of firms in the transformation of fossil fuel based energy systems towards cleaner and greener energy systems. Firms are playing an important role in determining the speed and direction of technical change towards such energy systems. But systemic constraints and negative externalities tend to make such transformations constraint and difficult. To be able to understand how firms overcome these systemic constraints and bring about positive externalities it would be important to observe the strategic role played by firms. Firms are removing technological and economic constraints by engaging in strategic alliances with other firms and research organizations. Both small and large firms have positioned themselves strategically in the green energy market either through basic innovations or through innovations brought about by joint technological partnerships.Firm Strategy, Sustainable Energy, Renewable Energy, System Transition
