    Flight Tests, Performances and Flight Certification of a Twin-Engine Light Aircraft

    This paper deals with flight test activities performed on P2006T, a twin-engine light aircraft recently designed and produced by Tecnam. Research activities and flight tests have been conducted during the flight certification of P2006T for the normal category under CS-23. All the acquired data and flight results presented have been focused on both aircraft certification and on aircraft performances, stability and flight qualities measurement. The data have been acquired through a light, accurate and reliable flight instrumentation available at DIAS (Department of Aerospace Engineering). Some flight data about aircraft leveled speed, stall speed, climb characteristics and ground performances (take-off and landing) will be presented. After preliminary flight tests, winglets have been designed and added to the final configuration in order to obtain good climb performances also in OEI (One Engine Inoperative) conditions. Accurate stall tests have been performed in all configurations and influence of both entry-rate and load factor on stall speed have been highlighted. Excellent ground performances have been measured with short take-off and landing distances compared with similar airplanes. All measured flight performances can be considered very good for this aircraft category and have been used to demonstrate aircraft safety and to obtain CS23 certification

    Ex vivo biomechanical evaluation of polyester and polyblend suture techniques to perform equine laryngoplasty

    Objective: To validate the use of a polyblend tape suture in equine laryngoplasty (PL). Study design: Experimental study. Animals: Thirty-two cadaveric larynges. Methods: Each larynx was randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups: PL with polyblend tape suture (TigerTape), without (TT) or with a cannula (TTC) in the muscular process of the arytenoid cartilage, and PL with polyester suture (Ethibond), without (EB) or with a cannula (EBC). Construct stiffness, total migration, creep, and drift values were measured after 3000 cycles. The specimens were then loaded to failure to assess their residual properties: load at failure, total energy, displacement, and 2 stiffness coefficients. Results: After cyclic testing, the total migration and creep were lower in TTC (6.36 ± 1.20 mm; 1.35 ± 0.38 mm/s) than in EB (11.12 ± 4.20 mm; 3.39 ± 2.68 mm/s) and in the TT constructs (11.26 ± 1.49 mm; 3.20 ± 0.54 mm/s); however, no difference was found with EBC (9.19 ± 3.18 mm; 2.14 ± 0.99). A correlation was found between total migration and creep (R =.85). The TTC constructs failed at higher loads (129.51 ± 33.84 N) than EB (93.16 ± 18.21 N) and EBC (81.72 ± 13.26 N) whereas the EB and EBC constructs were less stiff than TT and TTC (P <.001). Conclusion: Biomechanical properties were generally superior for the TTC constructs tested under cyclical loading. The TT and TTC constructs failed at a higher load than EB and EBC constructs. The cannula in TTC and EBC reduced the failure at the muscular process. Clinical significance: These results provide evidence to support the in vivo evaluation of the polyblend tape suture with or without a cannula in the muscular process for laryngoplasty in horses

    An Implantable Wireless Multi-Channel Neural Prosthesis for Epidural Stimulation

    This paper presents a fully implantable multi-channel neural prosthesis for epidural stimulation. The prosthesis features three telemetry-operated independent stimulators providing in total eighteen stimulation channels. The stimulator circuits were implemented in a 0.6-μm CMOS technology. The prosthesis is protected in a hermetically sealed ceramic enclosure and encapsulated in medical grade silicone rubber. In-vitro measured results with electrodes in saline are presented

    The upper critical field Hc2 is evaluated for weakly-coupled two-band superconductors. By modeling the actual bands and the gap distribution of MgB2 by two Fermi surface spheroids with average parameters of the real material, we show that H_{c2,ab}/H_{c2,c} increases with decreasing temperature in agreement with available data.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Thermal Fluctuations of Elastic Filaments with Spontaneous Curvature and Torsion

    We study the effects of thermal flucutations on thin elastic filaments with spontaneous curvature and torsion. We derive analytical expressions for the orientational correlation functions and for the persistence length of helices, and find that this length varies non-monotonically with the strength of thermal fluctuations. In the weak fluctuation regime, the persistence length of a spontaneously twisted helix has three resonance peaks as a function of the twist rate. In the limit of strong fluctuations, all memory of the helical shape is lost.Comment: 1 figur

    An analysis of spectra in the Red Rectangle nebula

    This paper presents an analysis of a series of spectra in the Red Rectangle nebula. Only the reddest part of the spectra can safely be attributed to light from the nebula, and indicates Rayleigh scattering by the gas, in conformity with the large angles of scattering involved and the proximity of the star. In the blue, light from HD44179, refracted or scattered in the atmosphere, dominates the spectra. This paper questions the reliability of ground-based observations of extended objects in the blue.Comment: 25 figure

    Electron diffusivities in MgB2 from point contact spectroscopy

    We demonstrate that the variation of the Andreev reflection with applied magnetic field provides a direct means of comparing the properties of MgB2 with the theory for a dirty two-band superconductor, and we find good agreement between the two. The ratio of electron diffusivities in the s and p bands can be inferred from this experiment. We find that the field dependence of the density of states at the Fermi level in the p band is independent of the field direction, and that the anisotropic upper critical field is determined by the anisotropic diffusivity in the s band

    Making on-line science course materials easily translatable and accessible worldwide: Challenges and solutions

    The PhET Interactive Simulations Project recently partnered with the Excellence Center of Science and Mathematics Education at King Saud University with the joint goal of making simulations available worldwide. One of the main challenges of this partnership is to make PhET simulations easily translatable so that truly anyone with a computer can use them in their classroom. The PhET project team has created the Translation Utility that allows a person, who is fluent in both English and another language, to easily translate any of the PhET simulations. This can be done with minimal computer expertise, making the translation process accessible to faculty and teachers. In this presentation we will share solutions to many of the unexpected problems we encountered that would apply in general to on-line scientific course materials including working with a language that is written right-to-left, different character sets, possible misconceptions and various conventions for expressing equations, variables, units and scientific notation

    Top quark physics in hadron collisions

    The top quark is the heaviest elementary particle observed to date. Its large mass makes the top quark an ideal laboratory to test predictions of perturbation theory concerning heavy quark production at hadron colliders. The top quark is also a powerful probe for new phenomena beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. In addition, the top quark mass is a crucial parameter for scrutinizing the Standard Model in electroweak precision tests and for predicting the mass of the yet unobserved Higgs boson. Ten years after the discovery of the top quark at the Fermilab Tevatron top quark physics has entered an era where detailed measurements of top quark properties are undertaken. In this review article an introduction to the phenomenology of top quark production in hadron collisions is given, the lessons learned in Tevatron Run I are summarized, and first Run II results are discussed. A brief outlook to the possibilities of top quark research a the Large Hadron Collider, currently under construction at CERN, is included.Comment: 84 pages, 32 figures, accepted for publication by Reports on Progress in Physic
