    Non-Collinear Ferromagnetic Luttinger Liquids

The presence of electron-electron interactions in one dimension profoundly changes the properties of a system. The separation of charge and spin degrees of freedom is just one example. We consider what happens when a system consisting of a ferromagnetic region of non-collinearity, i.e. a domain wall, is coupled to interacting electrons in one-dimension (more specifically a Luttinger liquid). The ferromagnetism breaks spin charge separation and the presence of the domain wall introduces a spin dependent scatterer into the problem. The absence of spin charge separation and the effects of the electron correlations results in very different behaviour for the excitations in the system and for spin-transfer-torque effects in this model.Comment: 6 pages, submitted to Journal of Physics: Conference Series for JEMS 201

    Killing vectors and anisotropy

We consider an action that can generate fluids with three unequal stresses for metrics with a spacelike Killing vector. The parameters in the action are directly related to the stress anisotropies. The field equations following from the action are applied to an anisotropic cosmological expansion and an extension of the Gott-Hiscock cosmic string

Intelligent clinical decision support system for managing COPD patients

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide. Health remote monitoring systems (HRMSs) play a crucial role in managing COPD patients by identifying anomalies in their biometric signs and alerting healthcare professionals. By analyzing the relationships between biometric signs and environmental factors, it is possible to develop artificial intelligence models that are capable of inferring patients’ future health deterioration risks. In this research work, we review recent works in this area and develop an intelligent clinical decision support system (CIDSS) that is capable of providing early information concerning patient health evolution and risk analysis in order to support the treatment of COPD patients. The present work’s CIDSS is composed of two main modules: the vital signs prediction module and the early warning score calculation module, which generate the patient health information and deterioration risks, respectively. Additionally, the CIDSS generates alerts whenever a biometric sign measurement falls outside the allowed range for a patient or in case a basal value changes significantly. Finally, the system was implemented and assessed in a real case and validated in clinical terms through an evaluation survey answered by healthcare professionals involved in the project. In conclusion, the CIDSS proves to be a useful and valuable tool for medical and healthcare professionals, enabling proactive intervention and facilitating adjustments to the medical treatment of patients.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Upper bound for the conductivity of nanotube networks

Films composed of nanotube networks have their conductivities regulated by the junction resistances formed between tubes. Conductivity values are enhanced by lower junction resistances but should reach a maximum that is limited by the network morphology. By considering ideal ballistic-like contacts between nanotubes we use the Kubo formalism to calculate the upper bound for the conductivity of such films and show how it depends on the nanotube concentration as well as on their aspect ratio. Highest measured conductivities reported so far are approaching this limiting value, suggesting that further progress lies with nanowires other than nanotubes.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure.

Alfvenic Heating of Protostellar Accretion Disks

We investigate the effects of heating generated by damping of Alfven waves on protostellar accretion disks. Two mechanisms of damping are investigated, nonlinear and turbulent, which were previously studied in stellar winds (Jatenco-Pereira & Opher 1989a, b). For the nominal values studied, f=delta v/v_{A}=0.002 and F=varpi/Omega_{i}=0.1, where delta v, v_{A} and varpi are the amplitude, velocity and average frequency of the Alfven wave, respectively, and Omega_{i} is the ion cyclotron frequency, we find that viscous heating is more important than Alfven heating for small radii. When the radius is greater than 0.5 AU, Alfvenic heating is more important than viscous heating. Thus, even for the relatively small value of f=0.002, Alfvenic heating can be an important source of energy for ionizing protostellar disks, enabling angular momentum transport to occur by the Balbus-Hawley instability.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures. Fast Switching Electrochromic Devices Containing Optimized BEMA/PEGMA Gel Polymer Electrolytes

    Get PDF
An optimized thermoset gel polymer electrolyte based on Bisphenol A ethoxylate dimethacrylate and Poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (BEMA/PEGMA) was prepared by facile photo-induced free radical polymerisation technique and tested for the first time in electrochromic devices (ECD) combining WO3 sputtered on ITO as cathodes and V2O5 electrodeposited on ITO as anodes. The behaviour of the prepared ECD was investigated electrochemically and electro-optically. The ECD transmission spectrum was monitored in the visible and near-infrared region by varying applied potential. A switching time of ca. 2 s for Li+ insertion (coloring) and of ca. 1 s for Li+ de-insertion (bleaching) were found. UV-VIS spectroelectrochemical measurements evidenced a considerable contrast between bleached and colored state along with a good stability over repeated cycles. The reported electrochromic devices showed a considerable enhancement of switching time with respect to the previously reported polymeric ECD indicating that they are good candidates for the implementation of intelligent windows and smart displays

The dynamical spin structure factor for the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain

The longitudinal spin structure factor for the XXZ-chain at small wave-vector q is obtained using Bethe Ansatz, field theory methods and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group. It consists of a peak with peculiar, non-Lorentzian shape and a high-frequency tail. We show that the width of the peak is proportional to q^2 for finite magnetic field compared to q^3 for zero field. For the tail we derive an analytic formula without any adjustable parameters and demonstrate that the integrability of the model directly affects the lineshape.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, published versio

Leigos para o Desenvolvimento: fundraising dynamics and development of donor’s loyalty in a NGDO

    Get PDF
Leigos para o Desenvolvimento is a Non-Governmental Development Organization whose activity began in 1986 and has come to feel the need to increase the organization's marketing. However, in order to be able to apply the techniques of marketing to the tertiary sector, it is essential to know the behaviour of donors, for different marketing actions may show different performances and different dynamics in fundraising. The object of this study is to understand the dynamics of fundraising and donors, and thus support the decision making on future marketing actions, either online or offline. Throughout the study, there was confirmed a strong dependence of the donors that donate only once, so using the obtained knowledge that it’s recommended that future marketing campaigns take into account the donor preservation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
