    Identifiyng the emerging roles of nanoparticles in biosensors

    This paper profiles R&D on the application of nanoparticles in biosensors and explores potential application development pathways. The analysis uses a dataset of nanotechnology publication records for the time period 2001 through 2008 (part year) extracted from the Science Citation Index. It focuses on emergent research activities in the most recent years. Bibliometric analyses are employed to ascertain R&D trends and research networks for key biosensors. Growth models are fit to forecast the technological trend for nanoparticle-enhanced biosensor research activity. In addition, a combination of quantity (publication) and quality (citation) analysis for nanoparticle-enhanced biosensors helps position the leading countries in this research field. Science overlay mapping shows different emphases of nanoparticle-enhanced biosensor research between the US and China, the leading countries. Recent studies suggest that nano-enhanced biosensors show promise for gains in stability, sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy - for both direct and indirect detection. This paper demonstrates how bibliometric analyses can help anticipate emerging technology development and application potential.<br

    Ferritin and Iron Studies in Anaemia and Chronic Disease

    Anaemia is a condition in which the number of red cells necessary to meet the body's physiological requirements is insufficient. Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) and the anaemia of chronic disease (ACD) are the two most common causes of anaemia worldwide; iron homeostasis plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of both diseases. An understanding of how iron studies can be used to distinguish between these diseases is therefore essential, not only for diagnosis but also in guiding management. This review will primarily focus on IDA and ACD; however iron overload in anaemia will also be briefly discussed

    The Influence of Tone Inventory on ERP without Focal Attention: A Cross-Language Study

    This study investigates the effect of tone inventories on brain activities underlying pitch without focal attention. We find that the electrophysiological responses to across-category stimuli are larger than those to within-category stimuli when the pitch contours are superimposed on nonspeech stimuli; however, there is no electrophysiological response difference associated with category status in speech stimuli. Moreover, this category effect in nonspeech stimuli is stronger for Cantonese speakers. Results of previous and present studies lead us to conclude that brain activities to the same native lexical tone contrasts are modulated by speakers’ language experiences not only in active phonological processing but also in automatic feature detection without focal attention. In contrast to the condition with focal attention, where phonological processing is stronger for speech stimuli, the feature detection (pitch contours in this study) without focal attention as shaped by language background is superior in relatively regular stimuli, that is, the nonspeech stimuli. The results suggest that Cantonese listeners outperform Mandarin listeners in automatic detection of pitch features because of the denser Cantonese tone system

    Suppression of the critical temperature of superconducting NdFeAs(OF) single crystals by Kondo-like defect sites induced by alpha-particle irradiation

    We report a comprehensive investigation of the suppression of the critical temperature Tc of NdFeAs(OF) single crystal by alpha-particle irradiation. Our data indicate that irradiation defects produce both nonmagnetic and magnetic scattering, resulting in the Kondo-like excess resistance Δρ(T)lnT\Delta\rho(T)\propto ln T over 2 decades in temperatures above TcT_c. Despite high densities of irradiation defects, the dose at which TcT_c is suppressed to zero is comparable to that for MgB2 but is well above the corresponding values for cuprates.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    The retransmission of rumor and rumor correction messages on Twitter

    This article seeks to examine the relationships among source credibility, message plausibility, message type (rumor or rumor correction) and retransmission of tweets in a rumoring situation. From a total of 5,885 tweets related to the rumored death of the founding father of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew, 357 original tweets without an “RT” prefix were selected and analyzed using negative binomial regression analysis. The results show that source credibility and message plausibility are correlated with retransmission. Also, rumor correction tweets are retweeted more than rumor tweets. Moreover, message type moderates the relationship between source credibility and retransmission as well as that between message plausibility and retransmission. By highlighting some implications for theory and practice, this article concludes with some limitations and suggestions for further research.MOE (Min. of Education, S’pore)Accepted versio
