    Uniqueness, Epistemic Modals and Dynamic Pronominal Anaphora

    While dynamic semantics successfully captures presupposition mechanisms and some uses of anaphoric pronouns, the theory has some lacunas with regards to anaphoric pronouns that seem to refer to a unique individual as well as ones that are preceded by epistemic modals. The general goal of this dissertation is to fill these lacunas and develop an improved dynamic model. After delivering a general introduction to dynamic semantics, we will tackle the first issue of the dynamic model. More specifically, we will address the criticism put forward by philosophers like Robert van Rooij, which deem dynamic predictions for certain uses of indefinite-linked pronominal anaphora to be unsatisfactory. To put it simply, they claim that in some cases anaphoric pronouns seem to refer to unique individuals, yet dynamic semantics does not represent them in that way. In order to solve the problem concerning uniqueness, I propose to interpret certain uses of indefinite-linked pronominal anaphora, that do not require uniqueness constraints, as being subordinated under a covert epistemic must-operator. This modification allows us to syntactically differentiate between cases that require uniqueness constraints and ones that do not. Due to this syntactic difference, I manage to accurately introduce uniqueness constraints into the semantics so that they solely target cases that require them and, therefore, solve the problem. The second lacuna that will be addressed relates to epistemic modals. In dynamic semantics, might- and must-claims do not license pronominal anaphora. However, intuitively, a pronominal anaphora that has a must-claim or a might-claim as its antecedent utterance is completely felicitous. Hence, I attempt to solve this problematic interpretation of indefinite-linked pronominal anaphoras that are subordinated under an epistemic modal. The dynamic interpretation of must-claims and might-claims will be scrutinized and revised, in order to provide an interpretation that licenses pronominal anaphora by allowing modal claims to add discourse referents to the domain of the context

    Investigation on VOC Content from Car Interior Finishing Systems and Its Influence on Leather Performances

    Content: Car industry is highly demanding for low emission parameters and despite remarkable results have been achieved since the last decade, the requests are day by day more sophisticated. The focus on emission is a severe task and requires the investigation on emissions on full-range and involves the expertise of multi and inter disciplinal competences. The leather industry is a clear key ring for car interior suppliers and it is also focusing on more sustainable processes and reducing the emission of pollutants to the environment, prompting the commitment of leather suppliers, tanneries, and chemical auxiliaries producers. From our perspective, in fact, one of the major problems that car interior producers are currently facing is the production of low-emitting leather, which requires special chemical auxiliaries to be achieved. In this context, our research has focused on the study of VOC volatile substances from car interiors, in particular on finishing systems, aiming at their reduction without losing the original performances of the finished leather article. Our investigation focused on full grain finished leathers, evaluating the contribution to the VOC emission from crust leather to the finished articles. A preliminary study showed that silicon compounds family brought an important contribution to the emission from a qualitative and quantitative perspective: these substances play a crucial role in terms of the final article performances (such as resistance), and quality. So, our investigation focused on innovative silicon-free auxiliary combination to give low VOC emission contribution from the leather compared with the same performances of the original silicon containing finishing. In order to evaluate the impact of the emissions, a series of analyses of the volatiles were performed: static headspace VDA 277 (and/or PV3341) analysis and active air sampling analysis GS 97014-3 type were performed, indicating that silicon contribution was very high in the emission. In addition, the quality of the leather was also assessed and characterised through standard automotive tests such as stick-slip, abrasion trials with Taber tester and Martindale machine, ball plate method, fogging test; rub fastness provided with Veslic tester (wet, dry, alcohol, gasoline), dry-rubbing trial with Gakushin tester. The set of result showed that standard leather containg silicon compounds on the finishing produced high VOC emission and high performance articles, thus contributing to VOC emission. Conversely, the novel finishing auxiliaries had low VOC emission, no silicons, yet high performance leather and therefore should be chosen from a more environmental point of view.     Spacecraft Proximity Navigation and Autonomous Assembly based on Augmented State Estimation: Analysis and Experiments

The augmented state estimation technique is a variable-dimension filtering approach, originally introduced by Bar-Shalom and Birmiwal [1]. In this technique, the state model for a target spacecraft is augmented by introducing, as extra state components, the target's control inputs. The maneuver, modeled as accelerations, is estimated recursively along with the other states associated with position and velocity, while a target maneuvers. By using the proposed navigation method, a chaser spacecraft can estimate the relative position, the attitude and the control inputs of a target spacecraft, flying in its proximity. It is assumed that the chaser spacecraft is equipped with on-board sensors able to measure the relative position and relative attitude of the target spacecraft. The available sensors would provide a measurement update sample time of the order of one second and be subject to random measurement interruption longer than one second. As preliminary analysis, this work introduces the technique applied to the planar, three-degree-of-freedom, spacecraft relative motion. The proposed approach is validated via hardware-in-the-loop experimentation, using four autonomous three-degree-of-freedom robotic spacecraft simulators, floating on a flat floor.     Multi-objective hull-form optimization of a swath configuration via design-space dimensionality reduction, multi-fidelity metamodels, and swarm intelligence

    A multi-objective simulation-based design optimization (SBDO) is presented for the resistance reduction and displacement increase of a small water-plane area twin hull (SWATH). The geometry is realized as a parametric model with the CAESESQR software, using 27 design parameters. Sobol sampling is used to realize design variations of the original geometry and provide data to the design-space dimensionality reduction method by Karhunen-Lo`eve expan- sion. The hydrodynamic performance is evaluated with the potential flow code WARP, which is used to train a multi-fidelity metamodel through an adaptive sampling procedure based on prediction uncertainty. Two fidelity levels are used varying the computational grid. Finally, the SWATH is optimized by a multi-objective deterministic version of the particle swarm optimiza- tion algorithm. The current SBDO procedure allows for the reduction of the design parameters from 27 to 4, resolving more than the 95% of the original geometric variability. The metamodel is trained by 117 coarse-grid and 27 fine-grid simulations. Finally, significant improvements are identified by the multi-objective algorithm, for both the total resistance and the displacement

    Entrepreneurial education and internationalisation of firms in transition economies: a conceptual framework from the case of Croatia

    The aim of this paper is to offer an integrated perspective on internationalisation process in transition economies and the role that an entrepreneurial education can play in it. The context of a transition economy, such those countries belonging to the former Yugoslavian republic, deeply affect the entrepreneurial activities established. Internationalisation offers a viable advantage to entrepreneurs and their firms to overcome a limited internal market and hostile conditions faced in the local environment. Thanks to the results obtained by a stream of studies focused on the entrepreneurial context in Croatia, we build a framework to explore the problems faced by entrepreneurs when internationalisation is considered and possible solutions. Our main contribution is the proposition of an entrepreneurial education as facilitator of the process. Indeed, entrepreneurial education, considered as formal education and an entrepreneurial university context, can directly ameliorate the process of internationalisation. Simultaneously it can also affect the networking strategy that in literature is another prominent element tackled regarding the problem of internationalisation in transition economies. Thus, entrepreneurial education may represent a strong boost in which to invest with public policies and targeted interventions

    Sport Entrepreneurship: A Synthesis of Existing Literature and Future Perspectives

    Sport entrepreneurship is progressively emerging as an extremely significant stream of research. Accordingly, scholars are progressively assessing how sportspeople tend to have higher entrepreneurial orientation and intentions than the average. In a similar fashion, scholars have also observed how sport-related entrepreneurial ventures can have a positive effect on community development. This notwithstanding, this literature stream is still fragmented, lacks a proper systematization, and needs an identification of its intellectual structure and research themes. Hereby, we performed a bibliometric analysis on 86 papers and a systematic literature review on the most influential papers belonging to the pertinent literature. Results show that a 4-cluster structure exists for sport entrepreneurship: its theoretical definitions and internal factors fostering it (cluster 1), environmental factors which may foster it (cluster 2), pedagogical approaches and education (cluster 3), and finally its impacts, especially in terms of community development and social benefits (cluster 4). From these findings, a framework to help both scholars and practitioners approaching the topic was developed
