Use of molecular and genomic data for disease surveillance in aquaculture: Towards improved evidence for decision making
Diagnostic tools for the identification and confirmation of animal diseases have been evolving rapidly over the last decade, with diseases of aquatic animals being no exception. Hence, case definitions used in surveillance may now include molecular and genomic components and ultimately be based on the entire genome of a pathogen. While the opportunities brought on by this change in our ability to define and differentiate organisms are manifold, there are also challenges. These include the need to consider typing tool characteristics during sampling design, but also the re-thinking of diagnostic protocols and standards for the meaningful interpretation of the increasingly complex data presented to surveillance managers. These issues are illustrated for aquaculture using the example of multi-country surveillance of antimicrobial resistance of Aeromonas spp. strains isolated from rainbow trouts (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in Europe. In order to fully exploit the opportunities of molecular and genomic information, a multi-disciplinary approach is needed to develop harmonised diagnostic procedures and modified surveillance designs for aquaculture as well as for terrestrial animal production. This will require adjustments in the relevant standards applicable to assess food safety and trade risks
An anatomical investigation of rare upper limb neuropathies due to the Struthers’ ligament or arcade: a meta-analysis
Background: The Struthers’ ligament (SL) is a fibrous band that originates fromthe supracondylar humeral process and inserts into the medial humeral epicondyle, potentially compressing both the median nerve and brachial artery. The controversial Struthers’ arcade (SA) is a musculotendinous band found in the distal end of the arm that might compress the ulnar nerve. This study aimed to evaluate the pooled prevalence estimate of the SL and SA, and their anatomical features. Materials and methods: A meticulous search of major electronic medical databases was carried out regarding both structures. Applicable articles (and all relevant references) were analysed. Data from the eligible articles was extracted and evaluated. The quality and the potential risk of bias in the included studies were assessed using the AQUA tool. Results: The arcade was reported in 13 studies (510 arms), whereas the ligament in 6 studies (513 arms). The overall pooled prevalence estimate of the ligament was 1.8%, and 52.6% for the arcade. Most frequently, the ulnar nerve was covered by a tendinous arcade (42.2%). In all cases, the ligament inserted into the medial humeral epicondyle, but had various origins. Only 1 study reported compression of the median nerve by the ligament, whilst another contradicted this view. Conclusions: Although the SL is rare, and the SA is a valid anatomical entity (though with a variable presentation), clinically meaningful neurovascular entrapments caused by these structures are infrequent. Nonetheless, a better understanding of each may be beneficial for the best patient outcomes
The anatomical landmarks effective in the localisation of the median nerve during orthopaedic procedures
Background: The aim of this study was to create a safe zone for surgeons who perform procedures in the wrist to avoid iatrogenic damage to the median nerve (MN) by identifying anatomical landmarks using ultrasound (USG).Materials and methods: We measured the distances between the MN and two easily identifiable anatomical landmarks at the level of the proximal border of carpal ligament using USG.Results: A total of 57 volunteers (n = 114 upper limbs) were included in this study. Our main findings revealed that the distance from the flexor carpi radialis tendon to MN (FCR-MN) was 7.87 mm (95% confidence interval 7.37–8.37) and the distance from flexor carpi ulnaris tendon to MN (FCU-MN) was 19.09 mm (95% confidence interval 18.51–19.67).Conclusions: The tendons of FCR and FCU are easily identifiable landmarks that can be distinguished using simple palpation. Based on our USG findings, the area around FCR should be carefully navigated to avoid iatrogenic injury to the MN during surgical procedures around the carpal tunnel
Three-dimensional coherent X-ray diffraction imaging of a ceramic nanofoam: determination of structural deformation mechanisms
Ultra-low density polymers, metals, and ceramic nanofoams are valued for
their high strength-to-weight ratio, high surface area and insulating
properties ascribed to their structural geometry. We obtain the labrynthine
internal structure of a tantalum oxide nanofoam by X-ray diffractive imaging.
Finite element analysis from the structure reveals mechanical properties
consistent with bulk samples and with a diffusion limited cluster aggregation
model, while excess mass on the nodes discounts the dangling fragments
hypothesis of percolation theory.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 30 reference
Entropy-induced separation of star polymers in porous media
We present a quantitative picture of the separation of star polymers in a
solution where part of the volume is influenced by a porous medium. To this
end, we study the impact of long-range-correlated quenched disorder on the
entropy and scaling properties of -arm star polymers in a good solvent. We
assume that the disorder is correlated on the polymer length scale with a
power-law decay of the pair correlation function . Applying
the field-theoretical renormalization group approach we show in a double
expansion in and that there is a range of
correlation strengths for which the disorder changes the scaling
behavior of star polymers. In a second approach we calculate for fixed space
dimension and different values of the correlation parameter the
corresponding scaling exponents that govern entropic effects. We
find that , the deviation of from its mean field value
is amplified by the disorder once we increase beyond a threshold. The
consequences for a solution of diluted chain and star polymers of equal
molecular weight inside a porous medium are: star polymers exert a higher
osmotic pressure than chain polymers and in general higher branched star
polymers are expelled more strongly from the correlated porous medium.
Surprisingly, polymer chains will prefer a stronger correlated medium to a less
or uncorrelated medium of the same density while the opposite is the case for
star polymers.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
A comparative study of high-field diamagnetic fluctuations in deoxygenated YBa2Cu3O(7-x) and polycrystalline (Bi-Pb)2Sr2Ca3O(10)
We studied three single crystals of YBa2Cu3O{7-x} with Tc= 62.5, 52, and 41
K, and a textured specimen of (Bi-Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 with Tc=108 K, for H//c
axis. The reversible data were interpreted in terms of 2D lowest-Landau-level
fluctuation theory. The data were fit well by the 2D LLL expression for
magnetization obtained by Tesanovic etal., producing reasonable values of kappa
but larger values of dHc2/dT. Universality was studied by obtaining a
simultaneous scaling of Y123 data and Bi2223. An expression for the 2D x-axis
LLL scaling factor used to obtain the simultaneous scaling was extracted from
theory, and compared with the experimental values. The comparison between the
values of the x-axis produced a deviation of 40% which suggests that the
hypothesis of universality of the 2D-LLL fluctuations is not supported by the
studied samples. We finaly observe that Y123 magnetization data for
temperatures above obbey a universal scaling obtained for the diamagnetic
fluctuation magnetization from a theory considering non-local field effects.
The same scaling was not obbeyed by the corresponding magnetization calculated
from the two-dimensional lowest-Landau-level theory.Comment: 7 pages 5 figures, accept in Journ. Low Temp. Phy
Micro-fabrication of Carbon Structures by Pattern Miniaturization in Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Gel
A simple and novel method to fabricate and miniaturize surface and
sub-surface micro-structures and micro-patterns in glassy carbon is proposed
and demonstrated. An aqueous resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) sol is employed for
micro-molding of the master-pattern to be replicated, followed by controlled
drying and pyrolysis of the gel to reproduce an isotropically shrunk replica in
carbon. The miniaturized version of the master-pattern thus replicated in
carbon is about one order of magnitude smaller than original master by
repeating three times the above cycle of molding and drying. The
micro-fabrication method proposed will greatly enhance the toolbox for a facile
fabrication of a variety of Carbon-MEMS and C-microfluidic devices.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
First Experimental Characterization of Microwave Emission from Cosmic Ray Air Showers
We report the first direct measurement of the overall characteristics of
microwave radio emission from extensive air showers. Using a trigger provided
by the KASCADE-Grande air shower array, the signals of the microwave antennas
of the CROME (Cosmic-Ray Observation via Microwave Emission) experiment have
been read out and searched for signatures of radio emission by high-energy air
showers in the GHz frequency range. Microwave signals have been detected for
more than 30 showers with energies above 3*10^16 eV. The observations presented
in this Letter are consistent with a mainly forward-directed and polarised
emission process in the GHz frequency range. The measurements show that
microwave radiation offers a new means of studying air showers at energies
above 10^17 eV.Comment: Accepted for publication in PR
Search for magnetically-induced signatures in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays measured at the Pierre Auger Observatory
We search for signals of magnetically-induced effects in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory. We apply two different methods. One is a search for sets of events that show a correlation between their arrival direction and the inverse of their energy, which would be expected if they come from the same point-like source, they have the same electric charge and their deflection is relatively small and coherent. We refer to these sets of events as multiplets . The second method, called thrust , is a principal axis analysis aimed to detect the elongated patterns in a region of interest. We study the sensitivity of both methods using a benchmark simulation and we apply them to data in two different searches. The first search is done assuming as source candidates a list of nearby active galactic nuclei and starburst galaxies. The second is an all-sky blind search. We report the results and we find no statistically significant features. We discuss the compatibility of these results with the indications on the mass composition inferred from data of the Pierre Auger Observatory
