    THE USE OF STORY MAP IN IMPROVING THE YEAR FOUR PUPILS’ ABILITY IN READING COMPREHENSION

    This is an action research on improving reading comprehension through story map among Year 4 pupils in one of the primary schools in Malaysia. My pupils were unable to answer WH-questions of the narrative texts. The research aimed to use story map to improve pupils’ reading comprehension and improve my teaching practices in reading comprehension. I am the researcher with 24 pupils, 12 males and 12 females. I utilized three data collection methods: pre-reading comprehension test and post-reading comprehension test, pupils’ work and teacher’s reflective journal. I introduced story map through demonstration. Then the participants completed the story through literary elements identification based on the narrative texts. Findings showed that story map helped to improve pupils’ reading comprehension by identifying literary elements and relating the literary elements with the comprehension questions. The story map gave positive impact to reading comprehension. The research has impacted the teaching and learning environment, pupils’ learning, and my teaching practices. I found out that story map was a useful method in attracting pupils’ attention and teaching literary elements. Furthermore, I was developed to be a reflective teacher in terms of strengths and weaknesses of the teaching and learning process. Story map can be an effective tool in improving reading comprehension among pupils. In addition, a more interactive story map which incorporates Information and Communication Technology (ICT) may also be employed in further research

    On the Bethe states of the one-dimensional supersymmetric t-J model with generic open boundaries

    By combining the algebraic Bethe ansatz and the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz, we investigate the supersymmetric t-J model with generic open boundaries. The eigenvalues of the transfer matrix are given in terms of an inhomogeneous T-Q relation, and the corresponding eigenstates are expressed in terms of nested Bethe states which have well-defined homogeneous limit. This exact solution provides basis for further analyzing the thermodynamic properties and correlation functions of the model.Comment: 17 pages, 2 tables, published versio

    Enabling controlling complex networks with local topological information

    Complex networks characterize the nature of internal/external interactions in real-world systems including social, economic, biological, ecological, and technological networks. Two issues keep as obstacles to fulflling control of large-scale networks: structural controllability which describes the ability to guide a dynamical system from any initial state to any desired fnal state in fnite time, with a suitable choice of inputs; and optimal control, which is a typical control approach to minimize the cost for driving the network to a predefned state with a given number of control inputs. For large complex networks without global information of network topology, both problems remain essentially open. Here we combine graph theory and control theory for tackling the two problems in one go, using only local network topology information. For the structural controllability problem, a distributed local-game matching method is proposed, where every node plays a simple Bayesian game with local information and local interactions with adjacent nodes, ensuring a suboptimal solution at a linear complexity. Starring from any structural controllability solution, a minimizing longest control path method can efciently reach a good solution for the optimal control in large networks.
