Restricted VAR Hedging with the Presence of Multiple Breaks

    Get PDF
Distinct from the existing literatures that most of them focussed on the case of a single change on issues related to structural change. This study addresses the practical advantage of hedging ratio when time varying structural breakings are considered. Data used in this study include daily observations of spot prices of WTI (Cushing, Oklahoma FOB), U.S. crude oil production, and futures closing prices of NYMEX over the period of 2002/1/2 ~ 2005/7/26. We compare on out-of-sample hedging effectiveness of this structural break with restricted VAR hedging model against standard VAR hedge model. It has been found that there are four structural breaks. And the improvement in hedging performance is clearly presented. Smaller hedging of a futures position can therefore reduce the investors cost extensively

Liquid Metal-Based Multifunctional Micropipette for 4D Single Cell Manipulation.

A novel manufacturing approach to fabricate liquid metal-based, multifunctional microcapillary pipettes able to provide electrodes with high electrical conductivity for high-frequency electrical stimulation and measurement is proposed. 4D single cell manipulation is realized by applying multifrequency, multiamplitude, and multiphase electrical signals to the microelectrodes near the pipette tip to create 3D dielectrophoretic trap and 1D electrorotation, simultaneously. Functions such as single cell trapping, patterning, transfer, and rotation are accomplished. Cell viability and multiday proliferation characterization has confirmed the biocompatibility of this approach. This is a simple, low-cost, and fast fabrication process that requires no cleanroom and photolithography step to manufacture 3D microelectrodes and microchannels for easy access to a wide user base for broad applications

Low titers of measles antibody in mothers whose infants suffered from measles before eligible age for measles vaccination

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Resurgence or outbreak of measles recently occurred in both developed and developing countries despite long-standing widespread use of measles vaccine. Measles incidence in China has increased since 2002, particularly in infants and in persons ≥ 15 years of age. It is speculated that infants may acquire fewer measles IgG from their mothers, resulting in the reduced duration of protection during their early months of life. This study aimed to clarify the reason of increased susceptibility to measles in young infants in China. Measles IgG in 24 measles infants ≤ 9 months of age and their vaccinated mothers was quantitatively measured. The mean measles neutralizing titer in the vaccinated mothers and in 13 age-match women with the histories of clinical measles were compared.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All the mothers were confirmed to be vaccinated successfully by the presence of measles IgG. Six vaccinated mothers were positive for measles IgM and had high concentrations of measles IgG and the neutralizing antibody, indicating underwent natural boosting. The mean measles neutralizing titer in 18 vaccinated mothers without natural boosting were significantly lower than that in 13 age-match women with the histories of clinical measles (1:37 vs 1:182, <it>P </it>< 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results suggest that infants born to mothers who acquired immunity to measles by vaccination may get a relatively small amount of measles antibody, resulting in loss of the immunity to measles before the vaccination age. Measures to improve the immunity in young infants not eligible for measles vaccination would be critical to interrupt the measles transmission in China.</p

Speech2Lip: High-fidelity Speech to Lip Generation by Learning from a Short Video

Synthesizing realistic videos according to a given speech is still an open challenge. Previous works have been plagued by issues such as inaccurate lip shape generation and poor image quality. The key reason is that only motions and appearances on limited facial areas (e.g., lip area) are mainly driven by the input speech. Therefore, directly learning a mapping function from speech to the entire head image is prone to ambiguity, particularly when using a short video for training. We thus propose a decomposition-synthesis-composition framework named Speech to Lip (Speech2Lip) that disentangles speech-sensitive and speech-insensitive motion/appearance to facilitate effective learning from limited training data, resulting in the generation of natural-looking videos. First, given a fixed head pose (i.e., canonical space), we present a speech-driven implicit model for lip image generation which concentrates on learning speech-sensitive motion and appearance. Next, to model the major speech-insensitive motion (i.e., head movement), we introduce a geometry-aware mutual explicit mapping (GAMEM) module that establishes geometric mappings between different head poses. This allows us to paste generated lip images at the canonical space onto head images with arbitrary poses and synthesize talking videos with natural head movements. In addition, a Blend-Net and a contrastive sync loss are introduced to enhance the overall synthesis performance. Quantitative and qualitative results on three benchmarks demonstrate that our model can be trained by a video of just a few minutes in length and achieve state-of-the-art performance in both visual quality and speech-visual synchronization. Pathogenesis and treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and its fibrosis

    Get PDF
The initial presentation of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is hepatic steatosis. The dysfunction of lipid metabolism within hepatocytes caused by genetic factors, diet, and insulin resistance causes lipid accumulation. Lipotoxicity, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and endoplasmic reticulum stress would further contribute to hepatocyte injury and death, leading to inflammation and immune dysfunction in the liver. During the healing process, the accumulation of an excessive amount of fibrosis might occur while healing. During the development of NASH and liver fibrosis, the gut-liver axis, adipose-liver axis, and renin-angiotensin system (RAS) may be dysregulated and impaired. Translocation of bacteria or its end-products entering the liver could activate hepatocytes, Kupffer cells, and hepatic stellate cells, exacerbating hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis. Bile acids regulate glucose and lipid metabolism through Farnesoid X receptors in the liver and intestine. Increased adipose tissue-derived non-esterified fatty acids would aggravate hepatic steatosis. Increased leptin also plays a role in hepatic fibrogenesis, and decreased adiponectin may contribute to hepatic insulin resistance. Moreover, dysregulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors in the liver, adipose, and muscle tissues may impair lipid metabolism. In addition, the RAS may contribute to hepatic fatty acid metabolism, inflammation, and fibrosis. The treatment includes lifestyle modification, pharmacological therapy, and non-pharmacological therapy. Currently, weight reduction by lifestyle modification or surgery is the most effective therapy. However, vitamin E, pioglitazone, and obeticholic acid have also been suggested. In this review, we will introduce some new clinical trials and experimental therapies for the treatment of NASH and related fibrosis

Elevated circulating level of P2X7 receptor is related to severity of coronary artery stenosis and prognosis of acute myocardial infarction

    Get PDF
Background: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a severely life-threatening cardiovascular disease. Previous research has identified an association between the P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) and the development of atherosclerosis. However, the correlation of its expression with the clinical prognosis of patients with AMI remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the potential role of P2X7R in Chinese patients with AMI. Methods: Seventy-nine patients with AMI and 48 controls were consecutively enrolled in this prospective observational study. Circulating P2X7R mRNA expression levels and other clinical variables were determined upon admission to the hospital. Patients were followed up for 360 days, and the end-point was considered as the occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Results: Circulating P2X7R mRNA expression level in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with AMI were significantly higher than those in controls and had promising diagnostic ability of AMI with an area under the curve of 0.928. Furthermore, P2X7R was demonstrated to be correlated positively with the severity of coronary artery stenosis. Additionally, this is the first study to indicate that higher P2X7R mRNA expression is associated with a higher rate of MACE within 360 days after AMI. Conclusions: The present study showed that the circulating level of P2X7R was elevated in AMI patients and was closely associated with the severity of coronary artery stenosis and prognosis of AMI

A cucurbit[8]uril-based fluorescent probe for the selective detection of pymetrozine

    Get PDF
Herein, we report a simple fluorescence-enhanced system for the selective recognition and determination of the insecticide pymetrozine. 1H NMR spectroscopic data indicate that 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (BPE) is partially encapsulated in the cavity of the cucurbit[8]uril (Q[8]) in aqueous solution, forming a stable 1:2 host-guest inclusion complex. Good evidence is also provided by other characterization techniques including single crystal X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. This host-guest inclusion complex shows weak fluorescence in aqueous solution. Interestingly, the addition of pymetrozine greatly enhanced the fluorescence of the host-guest inclusion complex. In contrast, no significant fluorescence enhancement was observed on addition of 10 other pesticides. The concentration of pymetrozine in aqueous solution was easily detected based on the linear relationship between fluorescence intensity and pymetrozine concentration. Therefore, this paper reports a new method to identify and determine pymetrozine by fluorescence enhancement
