CFD parametric study of thermal performance of different fruit packaging box designs
Air temperature and relative humidity values of cold storage conditions are the major factor affecting the perishability of fresh fruits. The sooner the field heat is extracted from the products and the proper temperature is maintained consistency throughout the cold chain, larger it will be shelf life of these products. Forced air cooling is the most commonly used technique to remove the field heat in post-harvest storage. Energy-efficient and quality-oriented cold storage mainly depends on the time to remove the heat. This time can be reduced by optimizing the configuration of the vent holes of the packaging box, namely it dimension (area), it shape, alignment and position. This paper shows the numerical predictions of air temperature and velocity by a CFD parametric study of eight different vent hole configurations. These configurations consider a packaging box with double wall. The vent holes of each wall have different dimension and shape. The vent holes of both walls can be also aligned or unaligned. The analysis of results aims to determine the best configurations that improve the cooling rate, the airflow and temperature uniformity. The numerical predictions of the air temperature show close values, but three configurations can be identified as predicting the lowest air temperature values with lowest standard deviation. These results may help on the development of new configuration for fruit boxes that promote the extension of the fruits shelflife.(undefined

Steel fibre reinforced self-compacting concrete for lightweight and durable pedestrian bridges : creep behaviour
In recent years, pedestrian bridges built from composites materials have notably increased. This growth is related to the durability problems of traditional materials, as well as the need for fastest construction times. In this context, fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) becomes an important material in this type of structures, since the ductility, high post-cracking tensile strength, high compressive stiffness and strength of FRC can be combined with the benefits derived from the use of FRP profiles to obtain high performance structural systems. In addition, FRC exhibits a durable behaviour since, in general, does not have corrosion problems. In this paper a 12 m length single span pedestrian bridge composed by a Steel Fiber Reinforced Self-Compacting Concrete (SFRSCC) deck and two Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) pultruded I shape profiles was designed. The SFRSCC deck has a constant thickness of 40 mm and 2000 mm wide and a content of hooked ends steel fibers in its mixture, which ensures the necessary strength and ductility for the acting loads. The high post-cracking tensile strength of the SFRSCC allowed the use of pre-stressed solutions in the bridge structural system, which caused an upward deflection and, consequently, tensile stresses in the SFRSCC deck. Two prototypes of this structural system were built and monitored in order to assess their long-term deformational behavior when subjected to a loading configuration correspondent to the load combination for the deflection serviceability limit states. The main results are presented and discussed
Macrofauna assemblages in a XVIIth century shipwreck: comparison with those on natural reefs and sandy bottoms
The macrofauna assemblages of a XVIIth century shipwreck off southern Portugal were studied and
compared with those of nearby natural reefs and sandy bottoms, by underwater visual census. A total
of 11 173 specimens of 224 different fauna taxa and 12 phyla were recorded. Natural reefs had the
highest density of specimens (35 122 / 1000 m2) followed by the shipwreck (21 392 / 1000 m2) and
the sandy bottoms (3771 / 1000 m2). Three biodiversity indices were estimated (Margalef, Shannon-
Wiener and Pielou), with the natural reefs showing the highest values. However, the shipwreck
presented values relatively similar to those of the natural reefs for the Shannon-Wiener and Pielou
indices. The three habitats were clearly distinguishable by multivariate statistical analysis, with the
average dissimilarity between sand and shipwreck, and between sand and natural reefs being much
higher than that between the shipwreck and the natural reefs. The shipwreck had higher abundances
of some commercially important species, such as the pouting Trisopterus luscus, European conger
Conger conger, and common spider crab Maja squinado, as well as some vulnerable and threatened
species such as the pink seafan Eunicella verrucosa. The results presented emphasize the importance
of this habitat on the southern Portuguese coast.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Augmented reality and holograms for the visualization of mechanical engineering parts
There is an increasing number of students using tablets in schools. Mobile devices gained popularity as an educational tool and there are many schools that use them frequently in educational activities to improve learning. We found that first year students of mechanical engineering in general have difficulties in understanding 3D shapes from 2D views. There are many Augmented Reality (AR) applications available that can be used to create educational contents for these mobile devices. On the other hand, there is an increasing interest in making holograms. In this paper we studied the most popular AR systems and show examples of using an AR system for the visualization of 3D models. We also present the creation of a low cost prototype, the EducHolo, that enables the visualization of holograms supported by tablets. With this prototype students can visualize the hologram of mechanical parts, providing a better perception of the model 3D shape and improving the ability of making the 2D orthographic views and perspectives that they study in the first year of mechanical engineer
