    International organisations and the role of collective bargaining

    This article analyses the positions on the role of collective bargaining of international organisations dealing with economic and employment issues. A stylised framework is developed that looks at each international organisation\u2019s mission, expert knowledge and structure (at political and technical levels). The analysis concludes that most of the international organisations under review remain anchored to their missions and mainstream economic analyses, with the exception of the OECD (partially) and the ILO. In contrast, the European Commission has a quite different nature, being part of a fully-fledged polity. The article concludes that the more nuanced position on the role of collective bargaining emerging from international organisations includes some important elements. In particular, the recognition of its potential for social inclusion and cohesion may support national measures that promote collective bargainin

    Representativeness of the European social partner organisations : Private Security

    This study aims to provide the necessary information for assisting the existing sectoral social dialogue in the private security sector. It identifies the relevant national organisations on both sides of the industry and analyses the European organisations pertaining to the sector. The study comprises three parts: a summary of the sector\u2019s economic background; an analysis of the social partner organisations in all EU Member States (with the exception of Latvia and Greece), focusing on membership, role in collective bargaining and public policy, and national and European affiliations; and, finally, an analysis of the relevant European organisations, particularly their membership composition and their capacity to negotiate. The EIRO series of representativeness studies aims to identify relevant national and supranational social partner organisations in selected sectors. They derive from the European Commission\u2019s desire to recognise the representative social partner organisations to be consulted under the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU)

    Trade union strategies to recruit new groups of workers

    This report aims to provide an overview of developments in both trade union membership and density in the 27 EU Member States and Norway. It looks at the initiatives undertaken by trade unions to recruit new members, especially in areas other than the traditional core union ranks: the manufacturing and public sectors. Recruiting new members and extending the reach of union representation feature high on the agenda of trade unions, with resources being specially mobilised for this purpose. Key aspects of trade union activities remain crucial, notably the integration of organising in day-to-day activities, and also the focus on traditional collective identities and the role of union representation in improving wage levels and working conditions

    Flexicurity and industrial relations

    This report reviews the present situation concerning the relevance and implementation of flexicurity in European Union Member States. First, the report presents a brief introduction of recent developments on the issue of flexicurity at EU level, followed by a review of policies at national level. The study then focuses on the contribution of social dialogue and collective bargaining to the different approaches to flexicurity at national level and on the positions of the social partners. Moreover, the report aims to investigate whether the introduction of the concept of flexicurity at national level has had any impact on the attitudes of the social partners as regards labour regulation and, more generally, on industrial relations
