    The topic of this thesis are spy films that were produced during the Cold War, with a specific focus on the James Bond films and their numerous imitators. The goal is to explore why these films were popular, particularly during the decade of the 1960s, and how these films and characters were used to address a number of anxieties that faced the United States in this period. The character of James Bond in these films established the dominance of a particular character type and provided a sense of wish fulfillment for a certain segment of the audience. His presence asserted that the fight of the Cold War and containment was in capable hands, and that those who fought it were having fun doing it. The Bond globetrotting superspy media figure was one that soon came to dominate the culture. Policymakers, politicians, and the CIA used the image of Bond to their benefit, as Bond’s popularity coincided with Kennedy and Johnson’s foreign policy strategy of flexible response, which favored elite strike forces rather than nuclear warfare as a way to address conflicts during the Cold War. Domestically, magazines from Life to Playboy, promoted the idea of the “Bond lifestyle,” and the perceived benefits that came from modeling one’s life after a superspy. The Bond media figure demonstrates that Cold War militarization took many forms and that characters from pop culture can have a significant impact on how people view themselves and the world around them

    Effects of interior aircraft noise on speech intelligibility and annoyance

    Recordings of the aircraft ambiance from ten different types of aircraft were used in conjunction with four distinct speech interference tests as stimuli to determine the effects of interior aircraft background levels and speech intelligibility on perceived annoyance in 36 subjects. Both speech intelligibility and background level significantly affected judged annoyance. However, the interaction between the two variables showed that above an 85 db background level the speech intelligibility results had a minimal effect on annoyance ratings. Below this level, people rated the background as less annoying if there was adequate speech intelligibility

    Information is presented on 22 noise metrics that are associated with the measurement and prediction of the effects of aircraft noise. Some of the instantaneous frequency weighted sound level measures, such as A-weighted sound level, are used to provide multiple assessment of the aircraft noise level. Other multiple event metrics, such as day-night average sound level, were designed to relate sound levels measured over a period of time to subjective responses in an effort to determine compatible land uses and aid in community planning. The various measures are divided into: (1) instantaneous sound level metrics; (2) duration corrected single event metrics; (3) multiple event metrics; and (4) speech communication metrics. The scope of each measure is examined in terms of its: definition, purpose, background, relationship to other measures, calculation method, example, equipment, references, and standards

    Interviews were conducted in the vicinity of Burbank Airport during a four month period during which a counterbalanced series of changes in aircraft noise exposure occurred due to runway repairs. Another interview was undertaken approximately one year after completion of the initial runway repairs. Noise measurements were made in conjunction with administration of a brief questionnaire to a near exhaustive sample of residents in four airport neighborhoods. The magnitude and direction of change of annoyance with aircraft noise exposure corresponded closely to the actual changes in physical exposure. Estimates were made of time constants for the rate of change of attitudes toward aircraft noise

    Integrating the WASL into the High School Algebra Curriculum

    Most Algebra courses in Washington are supplemented with Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) material. However, in the last two years, little more than half of Washington sophomores passed the math portion of the WASL; for about half of tenth graders the extra worksheets did little to no good. Students need relevant WASL material that correlates with the current math they are studying. In this manner, even though questions may be phrased differently, the material is familiar and so answering questions are more possible. Also, since new worksheets have multiple choice, teachers can discuss how most wisely to answer this type of question. The Project is made up of twelve worksheets each correlating to a chapter out of College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM), Algebra Connections. Each worksheet consists of multiple choice, short answers, and extended response questions and are in the same format as the WASL. Students, then, being familiar with the content have only to decipher the structure of the questions
