The need for psychiatric treatment in the general population: the Camberwell Needs for Care Survey

Background, This paper presents the first results of a two-stage psychiatric population survey, which uses a new method of directly evaluating needs for specific psychiatric treatment and the extent to which they have been met.Method, The sample was drawn at random from the population of an area of inner south London with high levels of deprivation. Seven hundred and sixty subjects aged 18-65 completed the GHQ-28. All those scoring > 5 and half of the rest were invited to take part in the second stage, comprising measures of mental state (SCAN), social role performance (SRPS), life events and difficulties (LEDS) and a Treatment Inventory. This information was used to rate the community version of the Needs for Care Assessment (NFCAS-C).Results, In all, 408 subjects were interviewed in the second stage. The weighted 1 month prevalence of hierarchically ordered ICD-10 psychiatric disorders was 9.8 %, the 1 year prevalence 12.3 %. The equivalent prevalences for depressive episode were 3.1 % and 5.3 % respectively, while those for anxiety states were both 2.8 %. At interview nearly 10% of the population were identified as having a need for the treatment of a psychiatric condition. This rose to 10.4 % if the whole of the preceding year was assessed. Less than half of all potentially meetable needs were met. There was only partial overlap between diagnosis and an adjudged need for treatment.Conclusion. A majority of people with mental health problems do not have proper treatment; given more resources and greater public and medical awareness, most could be treated by family doctors

Investigating the Site of Newton's Laboratory in Trinity College, Cambridge

It is not generally known that over the course of some thirty years, Isaac Newton carried out around four hundred chemical experiments in a private laboratory located in the walled garden immediately below his rooms in Trinity College, Cambridge. The exact location of his laboratory has long been a source of conjecture and this article describes a survey undertaken to determine both the possible site of the laboratory as well as that of the rubbish pit in which Newton would have disposed of the waste materials generated in his chemical experiments. The results are believed to be of sufficient interest to justify continuation of the investigation

The Impact of Sea State Condition on Airborne Lidar Bathymetry Measurements

Due to a large number of available Airborne Lidar Bathymetry (ALB) survey datasets and scheduled future surveys, there is a growing need from coastal mapping communities to estimate the accuracy of ALB as a function of the survey system and environmental conditions. Knowledge of ALB accuracy can also be used to evaluate the quality of products derived from ALB surveying. This paper presents theoretical and experimental results focused on the relationship between sea surface conditions and the accuracy of ALB measurements. The simulated environmental conditions were defined according to the typical conditions under which successful ALB surveys can be conducted. The theoretical part of the research included simulations, where the ray-path geometry of the laser beam was monitored below the water surface. Wave-tank experiments were conducted to support the simulations. A cross section of the laser beam was monitored underwater using a green laser with and without wind-driven waves. The results of the study show that capillary waves and small gravity waves distort the laser footprint. Because sea-state condition is related to wind at a first-order approximation, it is possible to suggest wind speed thresholds for different ALB survey projects that vary in accuracy requirements. If wind or wave information were collected during an ALB survey, then it is possible to evaluate the change in accuracy of ALB survey due to different sea surface conditions

EF+EX Forest Algebras

We examine languages of unranked forests definable using the temporal operators EF and EX. We characterize the languages definable in this logic, and various fragments thereof, using the syntactic forest algebras introduced by Bojanczyk and Walukiewicz. Our algebraic characterizations yield efficient algorithms for deciding when a given language of forests is definable in this logic. The proofs are based on understanding the wreath product closures of a few small algebras, for which we introduce a general ideal theory for forest algebras. This combines ideas from the work of Bojanczyk and Walukiewicz for the analogous logics on binary trees and from early work of Stiffler on wreath product of finite semigroups
