    Maternal feeding practices, child eating behaviour and body mass index in preschool-aged children: a prospective analysis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Previous research has found associations between parental feeding practices and children's eating behaviour and weight status. Prospective research is needed to elucidate these relationships.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>One hundred and fifty-six mothers of 2- to 4-year-old children completed questionnaires including measures of maternal feeding practices (pressure to eat, restriction, monitoring and modelling of healthy eating), child eating behaviour (food responsiveness, food fussiness and interest in food), and mother reported child height and weight. The questionnaire was repeated 12 months later. Regression analyses were used to find longitudinal associations between maternal feeding practices, child eating behaviour and child body mass index (BMI).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Modelling of healthy eating predicted lower child food fussiness and higher interest in food one year later, and pressure to eat predicted lower child interest in food. Restriction did not predict changes in child eating behaviour. Maternal feeding practices did not prospectively predict child food responsiveness or child BMI.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Maternal feeding practices appear to influence young children's eating behaviour but not weight status in the short term.</p

    My baby body : a qualitative insight into women\u27s body-related experiences and mood during pregnancy and the postpartum

    An inductive qualitative approach was employed to explore women\u27s experiences of their body and mood during pregnancy and the postpartum. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 perinatal women (n at late pregnancy=10; n in the early postpartum period=10). While most of the sample reported adapting positively to body changes experienced during pregnancy, the postpartum period was often associated with body dissatisfaction. Women reported several events unique to pregnancy which helped them cope positively with bodily changes (e.g. increased perceived body functionality, new sense of meaning in life thus placing well-being of developing foetus above body aesthetics, perceptual experiences such as feeling baby kick, increased sense of social connectedness due to pregnancy body shape, and positive social commentary); however, these events no longer protected against body dissatisfaction post-birth. While women reported mood lability throughout the perinatal period, the postpartum was also a time of increased positive affect for most women, and overall most women did not associate body changes with their mood. Clinical implications of these findings included the need for education about normal postpartum body changes and their timing, and the development of more accurate measures of perinatal body image.<br /

    Independent pragmatic replication of the Dove Confident Me body image program in an Australian Girls Independent Secondary School

    Following calls for the independent replication of universal body image programs under diverse conditions, this research aimed to investigate whether the universal co-educational prevention program developed for audiences in the United Kingdom (Dove Confident Me, DCM), was an acceptable and effective intervention when delivered by teachers to adolescent girls attending a single-sex Australian school. Comprising two studies, Study 1, evaluated DCM among Grade 8 students (N = 198) at a single-sex private school, and compared the results with students (N = 208) s from a matched comparison group. No improvements were observed on outcome measures between the comparison and intervention girls over the three time points. Study 2 involved minor modifications to the aesthetics and content of the program, as well as the logistics of delivery. Delivered by teachers to Grade 8 students (N = 242 intervention and N = 354 comparison), there were significant improvements in acceptability of the modified DCM program, yet no interaction effects observed on outcome measures. While the program did no harm, it is possible that there are adjustments to the methods utilized and content of programs that are trialed in efforts to prevent body image concerns and eating disorders in the school setting

    Prevention Across the Spectrum: a randomized controlled trial of three programs to reduce risk factors for both eating disorders and obesity

    Author version made available in accordance with publisher copyright policy.Background: A randomized-controlled trial (RCT) of 3 school-based programs and a no intervention control group was conducted to evaluate their efficacy in reducing eating disorder and obesity risk factors. Methods: N = 1,316 Grade 7 and 8 girls and boys (M age = 13.21 years) across three Australian states were randomly allocated to: Media Smart; Life Smart; Helping, Encouraging, Listening and Protecting Peers Initiative (HELPP) or control (usual school class). Risk factors were measured at baseline, post-program (5-weeks later), and 6- and 12-month follow-up. Results: Media Smart girls had half the rate of onset of clinically significant concerns about shape and weight than control girls at 12-month follow-up. Media Smart and HELPP girls reported significantly lower weight and shape concern than Life Smart girls at 12-month follow-up. Media Smart and control girls scored significantly lower than HELPP girls on eating concerns and perceived pressure at 6-month follow-up. Media Smart and HELPP boys experienced significant benefit on media internalization compared to control boys and these were sustained at 12-month follow-up in Media Smart boys. A group x time effect found Media Smart participants reported more physical activity than control and HELPP participants at 6-month follow-up, while a main effect for group found Media Smart participants reported less screen time than controls. Conclusions: Media Smart was the only program to show benefit on both disordered eating and obesity risk factors. Whilst further investigations are indicated, this study suggests that this program is a promising approach to reducing risk factors for both problems

    How perfectionism and ineffectiveness influence growth of eating disorder risk in young adolescent girls

The goal of the current study was to investigate a more complex model of how baseline perfectionism (both high personal standards and self-critical evaluative concerns) might influence change in risk status for eating disorders in young adolescent girls, through its influence on ineffectiveness. Method: The study was conducted with 926 girls (mean age of 13 years), and involved three waves of data (baseline, 6- and 12-month follow-up). Latent growth curve modeling, incorporating the average rate at which risk changed over time, the intercept (initial status) of ineffectiveness, and baseline perfectionism, was used to explore longitudinal mediation. Results: Personal standards was not supported as contributing to risk but results indicated that the higher mean scores on ineffectiveness over the three waves mediated the relationship between higher baseline self-critical evaluative concerns and both measures of eating disorder risk. The relationship between concern over mistakes and change in risk was small and negative. Discussion: These results suggest the usefulness of interventions related to self-criticism and ineffectiveness for decreasing risk for developing an eating disorder in young adolescent girls

    A Community-Based Study of Enduring Eating Features in Young Women

    We conducted a prospective exploration of the temporal course of eating disorder (ED) symptoms in two cohorts of community women. One hundred and twenty-two young women (Cohort 1) identified in a general population based survey with ED symptoms of clinical severity agreed to participate in a 5-year follow-up study. A comparative sample (Cohort 2) of 706 similar aged self-selected college women (221 with disordered eating) was recruited one year later. Both ED groups were given a health literacy package in the first year. ED symptoms, health related quality of life, and psychological distress were assessed annually with the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, the Short Form—12 Health Survey and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, respectively. Forty percent (Cohort 1) and 30.3% (Cohort 2) completed questionnaires at each year of follow-up. In both groups, there was early improvement in ED symptoms which plateaued after the first year, and participants retained high EDE-Q scores at 5 years. BMI increased as expected. Mental health related quality of life scores did not change but there were small improvements in psychological distress scores. The findings suggest little likelihood of spontaneous remission of ED problems in community women

    Who's most at risk of poor body image? Identifying subgroups of adolescent social media users over the course of a year

    Types and stability of appearance-related social media use patterns remain under-explored despite established links between social media use and wellbeing. This study aimed to identify subgroups of social media users, and explore whether subgroup membership was stable over time and associated with body image-related outcomes. Adolescents (N = 766; Mage = 12.76, SD = 0.73; 49.40% female) completed four surveys across 1-year, reporting several social media use indices, body dissatisfaction, dietary restraint, and strategies to increase muscle. Latent profile analyses identified two subgroups (moderate and high users), that remained reasonably stable over time. The high subgroup exhibited poorer body image at baseline, though differences seemed to dissipate somewhat over 1-year. Examination of subgroup transition over time showed more rapid increases in poor body image outcomes among social media increasers and more rapid declines for reducers. Prevention programs which aim to reduce high levels of social media use among children, young adolescents, and high-risk individuals (i.e., appearance-focused users) appear warranted
