Profile Monitor SEM's for the NuMI Beam at FNAL
The Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) project will extract 120 GeV
protons from the FNAL Main Injector in 8.56usec spills of 4E13 protons every
1.9 sec. We have designed secondary emission monitor (SEM) detectors to measure
beam profile and halo along the proton beam transport line. The SEM?s are Ti
foils 5um in thickness segmented in either 1?mm or 0.5?mm pitch strips,
resulting in beam loss ~5E-6. We discuss aspects of the mechanical design,
calculations of expected beam heating, and results of a beam test at the 8 GeV
transport line to MiniBoone at FNAL.Comment: to appear in proceedings of 11th Beam Instrumentation Workshop, Oak

Foresight technologies in the formation of a sustainable regional development strategy
In the modern regional management system, new principles, methods and tools should be used. The purpose of this paper is to substantiate theoretical and methodological approaches to the application of foresight technologies as a modern tool for optimizing the system of regional management in the formation of a strategy for sustainable development.
The paper analyzes the Russian and international experience of foresight formation and identifies the features of foresight introduction at the meso level; a roadmap for the sustainable development of a region, developed based on an analysis of long-term forecast and program regional documents, as well as a SWOT analysis of the socio-ecological and economic system of the Republic of Tatarstan.
The study determines the significance of foresight technologies in the context of the formation of sustainable development strategies for regional and municipal administrations.
Recommendations on the developed "Roadmap for the Sustainable Development of the Republic of Tatarstan" were studied and used in implementing measures to ensure the sustainable development of the urban economy.peer-reviewe
Theoretical backgrounds of nonlinear THz spectroscopy of semiconductor superlattices
We consider terahertz absorption and gain in a single miniband of
semiconductor superlattice subject to a bichromatic electric field in the most
general case of commensurate frequencies of the probe and pump fields. Using an
exact solution of Boltzmann transport equation, we show that in the
small-signal limit the formulas for absorption always contain two distinct
terms related to the parametric and incoherent interactions of miniband
electrons with the alternating pump field. It provides a theoretical background
for a control of THz gain without switching to the negative differential
conductivity state. For pedagogical reasons we present derivations of formulas
in detail.Comment: 14 page
Mechanical Properties of the Assembly Welded Joint of the Oil Transportation Tank After a Long-Term Service
The paper provides results of studying a change in mechanical properties of the design elements metal and assembly welded joints of a vertical steel tank after a long-term service in oil transport facilities
Organization and management of clusters in Russia in the context of import substitution
The article covers the trends of the agribusiness development in Russia. It is shown that it is desirable to develop organizational-economic forms of entrepreneurship based on the cluster approach in the modern realities.
The most famous agribusiness clusters in the world are explored. Regions of Russia that have achieved the most significant results in agribusiness clustering are mentioned. It is found that the establishment of agribusiness in Russia is defined by the political decision of regional authorities rather than based on research and development.
An algorithm for establishing the agribusiness cluster is proposed, which includes four stages: methodological, analytical, organizational-economic and control.
The key areas of state support for the development of agribusiness clusters in Russia are defined.peer-reviewe
Beam Test of a Segmented Foil SEM Grid
A prototype Secondary-electron Emission Monitor (SEM) was installed in the 8
GeV proton transport line for the MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab. The SEM is
a segmented grid made with 5 um Ti foils, intended for use in the 120 GeV NuMI
beam at Fermilab. Similar to previous workers, we found that the full
collection of the secondary electron signal requires a bias voltage to draw the
ejected electrons cleanly off the foils, and this effect is more pronounced at
larger beam intensity. The beam centroid and width resolutions of the SEM were
measured at beam widths of 3, 7, and 8 mm, and compared to calculations.
Extrapolating the data from this beam test, we expect a centroid and width
resolutions of 20um and 25 um, respectively, in the NuMI beam which has 1 mm
spot size.Comment: submitted to Nucl. Instr. Meth.
A Nationwide Analysis of Gunshot Wounds of the Head and Neck: Morbidity, Mortality, and Cost
Background:
Gun violence in the United States rose continuously from 2010 to 2022, spiking during the pandemic, and peaking in 2021 at 48,830 deaths (14.8 per 100,000). Previous reports investigated health and financial burden associated with gunshot wounds (GSWs) during 2004 to 2013; however estimates related specifically to head and neck (H&N) injuries have been lacking. This population-based study aims to examine incidence, morbidity, mortality, and health resource utilization of H&N injuries utilizing the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database.
Methods:
A population-based study was undertaken using the National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample (NIS) database (2015Q4β2017Q4). The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes were used to create a composite variable (inclusive of brain, eye, facial nerve, and facial fractures) resulting from GSW to the H&N. Incidence per 100,000 hospitalizations and case fatality rates were calculated to determine the health burden of H&N injuries. Length of hospital stay, and inflation- adjusted hospital charges were compared among H&N and non-H&N injuries. Ξ§2 (classical and bootstrapped) and Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare groups.
Results:
Of 101,300 injuries caused by firearms, 16,140 injuries (15.9%) involved H&N region. The average incidence of H&N injuries was 20.1 cases per 100,000 hospitalizations, with intentional injuries having the highest case fatality rates of 32.4%. Patients with H&N injuries had extreme loss of function (33.4% versus 18.3%, PPPP
Conclusions:
Injuries due to GSW remain an inordinate health care and financial burden, with trauma to the H&N carrying an especially high cost in dollars, morbidity, and mortality
Application of conflictology methods for evaluating physical protection systems effectiveness
At present, physical protection of nuclear material and nuclear facilities is actual. For the implementation of physical protection, Physical Protection System (PPS) is created at nuclear facilities. We all know that the most important characteristic is effectiveness of physical protection systems. PPS effectiveness value is determined by the probability that reaction forces can stop and intercept the intruder. There are many methods to assess the effectiveness of PPS. However, not all methods can provide an accurate quantitative assessment of the effectiveness of security systems. This work presents an approach for assessing the resistance of PPS to emerging threat (that is, the intruder to act against items of physical protection).Based on the fact that different processes are subject to universal physical laws and principles of development, a parallel between the concepts of Conflictology field was established to describe the interaction in the system "intruder against PPS"
