    Quantitative cw Overhauser DNP Analysis of Hydration Dynamics

    Liquid state Overhauser Effect Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (ODNP) has experienced a recent resurgence of interest. In particular, a new manifestation of the ODNP measurement measures the translational mobility of water within 5-10 \AA\ of an ESR-active spin probe (i.e. the local translational diffusivity D_{local} near an electron spin resonance active molecule). Such spin probes, typically stable nitroxide radicals, have been attached to the surface or interior of macromolecules, including proteins, polymers, and membrane vesicles. Despite the unique specificity of this measurement, it requires only a standard X-band (~10 GHz) continuous wave (cw) electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer, coupled with a standard nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer. Here, we present a set of developments and corrections that allow us to improve the accuracy of quantitative ODNP and apply it to samples more than two orders of magnitude lower than were previously feasible.Comment: 25 page manuscript submitted to PNMR

    Spectral variations of AeBe Herbig stars in the Mon R1 association

    We present the change in the Halpha emission-line profile of the spectra of some AeBe Herbig stars. In the spectrum of VY Mon, Halpha may have one of three profile types: P Cyg, P Cyg III or single line in accordance with the brightness variations of the star. HD259431 now shows a double Halpha profile with the red component stronger than the blue component, while in the earlier observations the blue peak was higher than the red peak. Finally, the last Halpha profile of LkHalpha215 is very similar to that obtained by Finkenzeller et al.Comment: 4pages, 3figure

    The economic burden of obesity in Italy: a cost‑of‑illness study

    Background Obesity is a complex health disorder that significantly increases the risk of several chronic diseases, and it has been associated with a 5–20-year decrease in life expectancy. The prevalence of obesity is increasing steadily worldwide and Italy follows this trend with an increase of almost 30% in the adult obese population in the last 3 decades. Previous studies estimated that 2–4% of the total health expenditure in Europe is attributed to obesity and it is projected to double by 2050. Currently, there is a lack of sufficient knowledge on the burden of obesity in Italy and most relevant estimates are derived from international studies. The aim of this study is to estimate the direct and indirect costs of obesity in Italy, taking 2020 as the reference year. Methods Based on data collected from the literature, a quantitative cost-of-illness (COI) study was performed from a societal perspective focussing on the adult obese population (Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2) in Italy. Results The study indicated that the total costs attributable to obesity in Italy amounted to €13.34 billion in 2020 (95% credible interval: €8.99 billion < μ < €17.80 billion). Direct costs were €7.89 billion, with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) having the highest impact on costs (€6.66 billion), followed by diabetes (€0.65 billion), cancer (€0.33 billion), and bariatric surgery (€0.24 billion). Indirect costs amounted to €5.45 billion, with almost equal contribution of absenteeism (€2.62 billion) and presenteeism (€2.83 billion). Conclusions Obesity is associated with high direct and indirect costs, and cost-effective prevention programmes are deemed fundamental to contain this public health threat in Italy

    Experiments were conducted on young growing rats. Hypokinesia lasting from 20 to 200 days caused retarded gain in weight and volume of the femur and delayed development of the cortical layer of the diaphysis. In contrast, the density of the cortical layer of the femoral diaphysis increased due to elevation of the mineral saturation of the bone tissue microstructures. Incorporation of Ca into the bone tissue in hypokinesia had a tendency to reduce. Partial normalization of the bone tissue mineral component occurred during a 20 day recovery period following hypokinesia

    Acute renal failure (ACR) is a clinical-biological syndrome of sudden rapidly advancing, commonly reversible damage of renal function when a normal body homeostasis cannot be maintained. In the Department of Paediatrics, Medical University of Varna, 18 children with ACR were treated. The most common reasons for the ACR were the following: acute glomerulonephritis, haemolytic-uraemic syndrome, and severe malformations of the urinary tract. Blood urea, creatinine, ionogram,acid-base balance, and diuresis were dynamically monitored in all the children. Therapeutic behaviour was directed towards the correction of the dyselectrolytaemia and acid-alkaline profile. The elevated lethality rate still persisted. Three patients deceased
