Information profiles for DNA pattern discovery
Finite-context modeling is a powerful tool for compressing and hence for
representing DNA sequences. We describe an algorithm to detect genomic
regularities, within a blind discovery strategy. The algorithm uses information
profiles built using suitable combinations of finite-context models. We used
the genome of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe strain 972 h- for
illustration, unveilling locations of low information content, which are

Effect of the curing time on the numerical modelling of the behaviour of a chemically stabilised soft soil
The ability of the Modified Cam Clay (MCC) model combined with the Von Mises (VM) model, considering the effect of curing time on the enhancement of the mechanical properties of a chemically stabilised soft soil is examined. The evolution of the strength and stiffness over time is based on the results of undrained compressive strength (UCS) tests carried out for different curing times (from 28 days to 360 days). Initially, the MCC/VM models associated with the effect of curing time are validated by CIU triaxial tests, for curing times of 28 and 90 days. Finally, the behaviour of an embankment built on a soft soil reinforced with deep mixing columns is predicted based on the previously validated models. The results show that the increase of curing time of the DMCs slightly decreases the settlement obtained with a curing time of 28 days
IRIS Observations of the Mg II h & k Lines During a Solar Flare
The bulk of the radiative output of a solar flare is emitted from the
chromosphere, which produces enhancements in the optical and UV continuum, and
in many lines, both optically thick and thin. We have, until very recently,
lacked observations of two of the strongest of these lines: the Mg II h & k
resonance lines. We present a detailed study of the response of these lines to
a solar flare. The spatial and temporal behaviour of the integrated
intensities, k/h line ratios, line of sight velocities, line widths and line
asymmetries were investigated during an M class flare (SOL2014-02-13T01:40).
Very intense, spatially localised energy input at the outer edge of the ribbon
is observed, resulting in redshifts equivalent to velocities of ~15-26km/s,
line broadenings, and a blue asymmetry in the most intense sources. The
characteristic central reversal feature that is ubiquitous in quiet Sun
observations is absent in flaring profiles, indicating that the source function
increases with height during the flare. Despite the absence of the central
reversal feature, the k/h line ratio indicates that the lines remain optically
thick during the flare. Subordinate lines in the Mg II passband are observed to
be in emission in flaring sources, brightening and cooling with similar
timescales to the resonance lines. This work represents a first analysis of
potential diagnostic information of the flaring atmosphere using these lines,
and provides observations to which synthetic spectra from advanced radiative

O estudo do ciclo de vida útil de pontes é um tema de crescente actualidade. Com efeito, o número de pontes é tão elevado que as administrações necessitam de investir cada vez mais dinheiro na inspecção e conservação das mesmas.
A comunidade científica nacional e internacional e as administrações rodoviária e ferroviária começam a dedicar a maior atenção ao vastíssimo campo do conhecimento que inclui a segurança, a inspecção, o diagnóstico, a gestão da conservação e a monitorização de pontes.
Neste artigo serão apresentadas as possibilidades actuais e alguns dos desafios neste domínio, que constitui a linha condutora da investigação do grupo de pontes da Universidade do Minho
