WAG Shares the DOPE: Tools for Effective Writing of Course Assignments International Writing Across the Curriculum Conference
We facilitated a three-hour workshop the afternoon of June 6, 2018. This workshop was an extension of work we have been doing in the College of Health and Human Services for the last 2 œ years. This work was originally supported by an Assessment Fellows Grant and focused on addressing assessment at the college level. To do that, we needed to focus on an area of competence that was relevant to all programs in the college. After reviewing the key goals that the college set back in 2005, and listening to colleagues on the college assessment committee, we decided to focus on the assessment of writing in the College of Health and Human Services. From there, we led focus groups with faculty in the college, to discern what exactly they were looking for when it came to writing assignments in their courses. After all, we could not assess something if we did not first describe it
Mechanical response of a self avoiding membrane: fold collisions and the birth of conical singularities
An elastic membrane that is forced to reside in a container smaller than its
natural size will deform and, upon further volume reduction, eventually
crumple. The crumpled state is characterized by the localization of energy in a
complex network of highly deformed crescent-like regions joined by line ridges.
Previous studies have focused on the onset of the crumpled state by analyzing
the mechanical response and stability of a conical dislocation, while others
have simulated the highly packed regime neglecting the importance of the
connectivity of the membrane. Here we show, through a combination of
experiments, numerical simulations, and analytic approach, that the emergence
of new regions of high stretching is a generic outcome when a self avoiding
membrane is subject to a severe geometrical constraint. We demonstrate that, at
moderate packing fraction, interlayer interactions produce a response
equivalent to the one of a thicker membrane that has the shape of the deformed
one. Evidence is found that friction plays a key role stabilizing the folded

Angiotensin II and VEGF are Involved in Angiogenesis Induced by Short-Term Exercise Training
Results from our laboratory have suggested a pathway involving angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptors and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in angiogenesis induced by electrical stimulation. The present study investigated if similar mechanisms underlie the angiogenesis induced by short-term exercise training. Seven days before training and throughout the training period, male Sprague-Dawley rats received either captopril or losartan in their drinking water. Rats underwent a 3-day treadmill training protocol. The tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscles were harvested under anesthesia and lightly fixed in formalin (vessel density) or frozen in liquid nitrogen (VEGF expression). In controls, treadmill training resulted in a significant increase in vessel density in all muscles studied. However, the angiogenesis induced by exercise was completely blocked by either losartan or captopril. Western blot analysis showed that VEGF expression was increased in the exercised control group, and both losartan and captopril blocked this increase. The role of VEGF was directly confirmed using a VEGF-neutralizing antibody. These results confirm the role of angiotensin II and VEGF in angiogenesis induced by exercise

Coordination polymers and isomerism; a study using silver(I) and a â-stacked ligand
The ligand 2,5-bis(2-pyridylmethylsulfanylmethyl)pyrazine (L) was prepared by the base coupling of 2-(sulfanylmethyl)pyridine and 2,5-bis(chloromethyl)pyrazine. This new ligand was treated with AgClOâ in a 1 1 metal-to-ligand ratio and with AgNOâin a 2 1 metal-to-ligand ratio to give coordination polymers. The crystal structures of {[Ag(L)]ClOâ}â ( 1) and {[Agâ(L)](NOâ)â}â ( 2) were determined. The Ag(I) ions in the one-dimensional polymeric chains of 1 adopted square-pyramidal geometries with the pyridine and pyrazine N donors coordinated in an extremely bent fashion. The structure of 2 revealed two isomeric polymer chains in the one crystal forming a single supramolecular array. The isomeric polymers differed in the donor atoms about the Ag(I) ions and in the arrangement of adjacent ligands along the chain. A feature of both structures was that L adopted a three-layer â-stacked arrangement
