Blockchain electricity trading using tokenised power delivery contracts. ESRI Working Paper No. 649 December 2019
This paper proposes a new mechanism for forward selling renewable electricity generation. In this transactive
framework, a wind or solar farm may directly sell to consumers a claim on their future power output in the form of nonfungible
blockchain tokens. Using the flexibility of smart contract code, which executes irrevocably on a blockchain, the realised
generation levels will offset the token holders’ electricity consumption in near real-time. To elucidate the flexibility offered by
such smart contracts, two ways of structuring these power delivery instruments are considered: firstly, an exotic tranched
system, where more senior tokens holders enjoy priority claims on power, as compared against a simpler pro-rata scheme,
where the realised output of a generator is equally apportioned between token holders. A notional market simulation is
provided to explore whether, for instance, consumers could exploit the flatter power delivery profiles of more senior tranches to
better schedule their responsive demands
End Stage and Chronic Kidney Disease: Associations with Renal Cancer
There is a well known association between end stage renal disease and the development of kidney cancer in the native kidney of patients requiring renal replacement therapy. There is now emerging evidence that lesser degrees of renal insufficiency (chronic kidney disease, CKD) are also associated with an increased likelihood of cancer in general and kidney cancer in particular. Nephropathological changes are commonly observed in the non-tumor bearing portions of kidney resected at the time of partial and radical nephrectomy (RN). In addition, patients with renal cancer are more likely to have CKD at the time of diagnosis and treatment than the general population. The exact mechanism by which renal insufficiency transforms normal kidney cells into tumor cells is not known. Possible mechanisms include uremic immune inhibition or increased exposure to circulating toxins not adequately cleared by the kidneys. Surgeons managing kidney tumors must have an increased awareness of their patient’s renal functional status as they plan their resection. Kidney sparing approaches, including partial nephrectomy (PN) or active surveillance in older and morbidly ill patients, can prevent CKD or delay the further decline in renal function which is well documented with RN. Despite emerging evidence that PN provides equivalent local tumor control to RN while at the same time preventing CKD, this operation remains under utilized in the United States and abroad. Increased awareness of the bi directional relationship between kidney function and kidney cancer is essential in the contemporary management of kidney cancer
INVESTIGATION OF SURFACE FINE GRAINED LAMINAE, STREAMBED, AND STREAMBANK PROCESSES USING A WATERSHED SCALE HYDROLOGIC AND SEDIMENT TRANSPORT MODEL
Sediment transport at the watershed scale in the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky is dominated by surface fine grained laminae, streambed, and streambank erosion; high instream sediment storage; and surface erosion processes. All these processes can be impacted by agricultural, urban, and suburban land-uses as well as hydrologic forcing. Understanding sediment transport processes at the watershed scale is a need for budgeting and controlling sediment pollution, and watershed modeling enables investigation of the cumulative effect of sediment processes and the parameters controlling these processes upon the entire sediment budget for a watershed. Sediment transport is being modeled by coupling the hydrologic model Hydrologic Simulations Program-FORTRAN (HSPF) with an in-house conceptually based hydraulic and sediment transport model. The total yield at the watershed outlet as well as the source fractions from surface fine grained lamina, streambed, and streambank sources; deposition; and biological generation within the streambed are predicted with the sediment transport model. Urbanization scenarios are then run on the calibrated model so as to predict the sediment budget for the South Elkhorn watershed for present and future conditions

This thesis focuses on the intersection between spirituality and political action in the works of two Latinx authors, Demetria Martinez and Ana Castillo. Building on Gloria Anzaldua’s theories of trauma, narrative, and what she terms ‘conocimiento,’ I contend that the novels So Far From God, and Mother Tongue, present an alternative approach to political action that is derived from a common experience of suffering and trauma as experienced by Latina communities. The political actions in the two novels and the ideas which inspire those actions, are born out of a need for solidarity between individuals, and are founded upon the idea that politics ought to be inspired by the spiritual lives and beliefs of individuals, as it is a central aspect of their identity
