    A binuclear vanadium oxyfluoride: di-μ-oxido-bis[fluoridooxido(1,10-phenanthroline)vanadium(V)]

    Get PDF
The title compound, [V2F2O4(C12H8N2)2], is a centrosymmetric binuclear vanadium(V) species with the metal ions in a distorted octahedral environment. The symmetry-equivalent VV atoms exhibit coordination geometries defined by cis-terminal fluoride and oxide groups, unsymmetrically bridging oxide groups and the N-atom donors of the phenanthroline ligands. The crystal packing is stabilized by weak intermolecular C—H⋯O and C—H⋯F hydrogen bonds

Social and family characteristics of Hispanics with epilepsy

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to determine how acculturation, social support, family emotional involvement, perceived family criticism and stigma are associated with epilepsy self-efficacy and depression. A principal components analysis (PCA) was used to describe the salience of these characteristics within a sample of Hispanics with epilepsy.A total of 50 Hispanic adults of Mexican descent identified in our Epilepsy Clinic participated in this study. The PCA identified four distinct types, two were relatively culture-free, and two were distinctly culturally oriented. The first non-culture affiliated type described a well-adjusted group of individuals that tended to be males with moderate self-efficacy, who received social support, and who were unlikely to have depression or feel stigmatized. The second non-culture affiliated type described a dimension in which family emotional involvement tended to co-occur with perceived criticism. The Anglo-oriented group had a family environment that did not appear to criticize the individual with epilepsy and had good self-efficacy. The Mexican-oriented group had high self-efficacy and was unlikely to have depression. Results suggest that acculturation variables must be taken into consideration among ethnic groups because social, psychological and acculturation variables interact in complex ways. Additionally, it is clear that a diagnosis of epilepsy does not automatically lead to poor quality of life, stigma, or depression

Massive Ice Control on Permafrost Coast Erosion and Sensitivity

High overall rates of permafrost cliff retreat, coupled with spatial variability, have been accompanied by increased uncertainty over future landscape dynamics. We map long‐term (>80 years) retreat of the shoreline and photogrammetrically analyze historic aerial imagery to quantify the processes at a permafrost coast site with massive ground ice. Retreat rates have been relatively constant, but topographic changes show that subsidence is a potentially critical but often ignored component of coastal sensitivity, exceeding landward recession by over three times during the last 24 years. We calibrate novel passive seismic surveys along clear and variable exposures of massive ground ice and then spatially map key subsurface layers. Combining decadal patterns of volumetric change with new ground ice variation maps enables past trends to be interpreted, future volumetric geomorphic behavior to be better constrained, and improves the assessment of permafrost coast sensitivity and the release of carbon‐bearing material

Stable and Adaptive Control for Wheeled Mobile Platform

ABSTRACT: Most differential drive platforms are equipped with two independent actuators and casters. The positions of the gravity center and the rotation center often do not coincide. This position difference, combined with the effect of unbalanced actuator dynamics on the motion, makes it difficult to properly control the platform. We propose an adaptive nonlinear controller system based on the Lyapunov stability theory that greatly improves the trajectory tracking performance of such platforms. The asymptotically stable kinematic controller takes into account the position difference and the effect of the unbalanced actuator dynamics. The dynamic controller has the desirable property that it requires minimal knowledge of the platform physical parameters. Validation was performed through simulation and several experiments conducted on a rear driven powered wheelchair. Comparative experimental studies suggested that the proposed adaptive control system performs better than a similar method presented in the literature for linear as well as curvilinear trajectory tracking. Furthermore, the control system exhibits good tracking performance on inclined plans and non smooth surfaces

Cone-Beam Computed Tomography as an Adjunct to Performance of Percutaneous Cementoplasty of the Acetabulum

AbstractAcetabuloplasty is a valuable palliative adjunct for the treatment of patients with painful metastatic disease to the pelvis in selected cases. We report the case of a 45-year-old woman with morbid obesity and with breast carcinoma who was technically difficult to treat under fluoroscopic guidance due to very poor visualization secondary to her body habitus. It was possible to perform radiofrequency ablation and acetabuloplasty with the use of cone-beam computed tomography for guidance

The Polarizing Impact of Science Literacy and Numeracy on Perceived Climate Change Risks

    Get PDF
Seeming public apathy over climate change is often attributed to a deficit in comprehension. The public knows too little science, it is claimed, to understand the evidence or avoid being misled. Widespread limits on technical reasoning aggravate the problem by forcing citizens to use unreliable cognitive heuristics to assess risk. An empirical study found no support for this position. Members of the public with the highest degrees of science literacy and technical reasoning capacity were not the most concerned about climate change. Rather, they were the ones among whom cultural polarization was greatest. This result suggests that public divisions over climate change stem not from the public’s incomprehension of science but from a distinctive conflict of interest: between the personal interest individuals have in forming beliefs in line with those held by others with whom they share close ties and the collective one they all share in making use of the best available science to promote common welfare
