If Animals Are Like Our Children Let Us Treat Them Alike: Creating Tests of an Animal\u27s Intelligence for Determinations of Legal Personhood
The notion that animals could be granted rights under the law was once ridiculed, but now courts and legislatures have begun to move towards granting animals greater protections from cruelty and emotional trauma. Animal law as a course of study was not available in law schools until the early 1970\u27s. It has since grown into a field of debate and study that has drawn in experts from around the world. The rules of law that treat animals as property have been fought by animal rights advocates as being archaic similarly to the laws that once allowed for slavery. Animal owners are now being treated as guardians of animals rather than property owners who may benefit from their animals, but who must also ensure their health. Due to a lack of legal personhood under the law, when animals are injured or their wellbeing is threatened, advocates and owners are often barred from bringing claims on the behalf of animals because of the lack of legal standing to argue for the animals they are attempting to aid. Children have been seen by philosophers and the law as property that are under the control of their parents. Examining the relationship between children and their caregivers has been likened to examining the relationship between other sentient animals and their owners. The earliest anti-child abuse laws stemmed from efforts to end animal cruelty and sought to protect children not only from abusive guardians, but also from exploitation through labor and medical experimentation. Inspired by anti-child cruelty laws, reforms were made to address medical research abuses, availability of education, eugenics, and a variety of other social problems. Interestingly, such reforms were often backed by arguments comparing the legal status of animals and children. The current state of the law is a hodgepodge of common law, statues, and agency regulations which makes it difficult to determine what, if any, choices a child can make and what protections from harm they have

Disparities in the Use of Prophylactic Treatments in Reproductive Health Between the Sexes: A Recommendation for the Use of HPV Vaccination Schemes Rather than Surgical Interventions to Reduce Inequities and Threats to the Public\u27s Health
On the issue of prophylactic treatment of reproductive diseases, the sexes have historically been treated differently under medical ethics guidelines and the laws of the United States. Women have drawn the focus of medical and legal scrutiny on issues of prophylactic reproductive health. Women were often required to undergo quarantine and forced to recieve treatment for reproductive diseases considered dangerous to public health. Women are now afforded protections against involuntary prophylactic procedures to prevent diseases in reproductive organs. Specifically, women are provided access to vaccinations against the human papillomavirus at a higher rate than males despite the disease\u27s ability to negatively impact both sexes. In order to control the spread of the human papillomavirus and to best ensure an opportunity for both sexes to maintain positive reproductive health, the rules guiding medical professionals and the laws of the United States must treat both sexes equally with regard to granting protections from unnecessary prophylactic treatments and in allowing access to human papillomavirus vaccinations
HST Studies of the WLM Galaxy. I. The Age and Metallicity of the Globular Cluster
We have obtained V and I images of the lone globular cluster that belongs to
the dwarf Local Group irregular galaxy known as WLM. The color-magnitude
diagram of the cluster shows that it is a normal old globular cluster with a
well-defined giant branch reaching to M_V=-2.5, a horizontal branch at
M_V=+0.5, and a sub-giant branch extending to our photometry limit of M_V=+2.0.
A best fit to theoretical isochrones indicates that this cluster has a
metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.52\pm0.08 and an age of 14.8\pm0.6 Gyr, thus
indicating that it is similar to normal old halo globulars in our Galaxy. From
the fit we also find that the distance modulus of the cluster is 24.73\pm0.07
and the extinction is A_V=0.07\pm0.06, both values that agree within the errors
with data obtained for the galaxy itself by others. We conclude that this
normal massive cluster was able to form during the formation of WLM, despite
the parent galaxy's very small intrinsic mass and size.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl
Sorption behaviour of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in tropical soils
The sorption behaviour of three perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), namely perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), was determined on 28 tropical soils. Tropical soils are often highly weathered, richer in sesquioxides than temperate soils and may contain variable charge minerals. There are little data on sorption of PFASs in tropical soils. The highest Kd values were found for PFOS with mean values ranging from 0 to 31.6 L/kg. The Kd values for PFOA and PFHxS ranged from 0 to 4.9 L/kg and from 0 to 5.6 L/kg, respectively. While these values are in the range of literature sorption data, the average Kd values for PFOS and PFOA from the literature were 3.7 times and 3.6 times higher, respectively, than those measured in this study. Stepwise regression analysis did explain some of the variance, but with different explanatory variables for the different PFASs. In vitro evidence consistent with an interaction between wild‐type and mutant SOD1 protein associated with canine degenerative myelopathy
Canine degenerative myelopathy (DM) is a progressive neurological disorder that may be considered to be a large animal model for specific forms of the fatal human disease, familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (fALS). DM is associated with a c118G>A mutation of the superoxide dismutase 1 (Sod1) gene, and a significant proportion of cases are inherited in an autosomal recessive manner in contrast to the largely, but not exclusively, dominant mode of inheritance in fALS. The consensus view is that these Sod1/SOD1 mutations result in a toxic gain of function but the mechanisms remain unclear. Here we used an in vitro neuroblastoma cell line transfection system to monitor wild-type and mutant forms of SOD1 fusion proteins containing either a Cherry or an enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) tag. These fusion proteins retained SOD1 enzymatic activity on a native gel assay system. We demonstrate that SOD1 aggregate density is significantly higher in DM transfectants compared to wild-type. In addition, we show by co-immunoprecipitation and confocal microscopy, evidence for a potential interaction between wild-type and mutant forms of SOD1 in co-transfected cells. While in vitro studies have shown SOD1 heterodimer formation in fALS models, this is the first report for DM SOD1. Therefore, despite for the majority of cases there is a difference in the mode of inheritance between fALS and DM, a similar interaction between wild-type and mutant SOD1 forms can occur. Clarifying the role of SOD1 in DM may also be of benefit to understanding the role of SOD1 in fALS
Validating criteria for identifying core concepts using many-facet rasch measurement
IntroductionCore concepts are foundational, discipline-based ideas considered necessary for students to learn, remember, understand, and apply. To evaluate the extent to which a concept is “core,” experts often rate concepts using various criteria, such as importance, complexity, and timeliness. However, there is a lack of validity evidence for core concepts criteria.MethodsUsing a three-facet Many-Facet Rasch Measurement (MFRM) model, we analyzed 7,558 ratings provided by 21 experts/raters for 74 pharmacology core concepts using five criteria measured on a five-point scale.ResultsAll of the criteria had Infit or Outfit MnSq values within the expected range (0.5 < MnSq < 1.7), suggesting the criteria contained an acceptable amount of variability; a reliability index of approximately 1.00 suggested that the criteria were reliably separated with a high degree of confidence. The rating scale Outfit MnSq statistics also fell within the 0.5–1.7 model fit limits; the “average measure” and “Rasch-Andrich thresholds” increased in magnitude as the rating scale categories increased, suggesting that core concepts with higher ratings were in fact meeting the criteria more convincingly than those with lower ratings. Adjusting expert ratings using the MFRM facets (e.g., rater severity) resulted in reorganization of core concepts rankings.ConclusionThis paper is a novel contribution to core concepts research and is intended to inform other disciplines seeking to develop, implement, and refine core concepts within the biomedical sciences and beyond
Normal Globular Cluster Systems in Massive Low Surface Brightness Galaxies
We present the results of a study of the globular cluster systems of 6
massive spiral galaxies, originally cataloged as low surface brightness
galaxies but here shown to span a wide range of central surface brightness
values, including two intermediate to low surface brightness galaxies. We used
the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board HST to obtain photometry in the F475W
and F775W bands and select sources with photometric and morphological
properties consistent with those of globular clusters. A total of 206
candidates were identified in our target galaxies. From a direct comparison
with the Galactic globular cluster system we derive specific frequency values
for each galaxy that are in the expected range for late-type galaxies. We show
that the globular cluster candidates in all galaxies have properties consistent
with globular cluster systems of previously studied galaxies in terms of
luminosity, sizes and color. We establish the presence of globular clusters in
the two intermediate to low surface brightness galaxies in our sample and show
that their properties do not have any significant deviation from the behavior
observed in the other sample galaxies. Our results are broadly consistent with
a scenario in which low surface brightness galaxies follow roughly the same
evolutionary history as normal (i.e. high surface) brightness galaxies except
at a much lower rate, but require the presence of an initial period of star
