Broadening the Mission: Research Activity among University Labor Education/Labor Studies Professionals
[Excerpt] This study examines research activity among university and college labor education/labor studies professionals. Using data gathered in a survey of faculty employed in the field, the paper presents information concerning the extent and focus of these research activities, the methodologies employed, the outlets for the research products that result, and the factors limiting such work. The findings of this study indicate that research, of both an applied and scholarly nature, is an increasingly significant part of the work of labor education/labor studies professionals. The study concludes with a discussion of the implications this trend has for the labor education/labor studies field, with special attention being given to the role research activity can play in meeting the needs of unions, union members, and union leaders
Enrollment Patterns in Advanced Middle School Mathematics Classes
The problem investigated in this study is that U.S. minority and low socioeconomic status (SES) student participation in advanced academic classes continues to lag behind that of Caucasian and economically advantaged students. The purpose of this project study was to investigate the participation gaps between minority and low SES students compared with non-minority and high SES students in advanced mathematics courses in the study district\u27s middle school. The theoretical framework for the study was gap-analysis theory. A quantitative gap analysis of existing student test score data was conducted, utilizing a secondary analysis of existing Iowa Test of Basic Skills data from 347 middle school students, with 196 students classified as low SES and 129 as minority. Descriptive statistics and 2 one-sample chi square tests were used to examine differences by ethnicity and SES subgroups and to test whether the distributions of students who met the district\u27s 70th-percentile cut-score were different than the hypothesized distribution of equal proportions. The results demonstrated significant enrollment gaps between minority and low SES students versus non-minority and high SES students. The study findings informed a policy recommendation project that offered suggestions for the current mathematics testing and enrollment program at the study site. Implications for social change include providing research-based findings to the administration at the local site on the enrollment gaps for minority and low SES students which may inform future decisions about enrollment policies for advanced mathematics courses
Liability, insurance and defensive medicine: new evidence
For the first time, we test for effects of liability on hospital care using measures of current perceptions of litigation risk at hospital level; in particular, the risk-sharing arrangements agreed between hospitals and their insurers. GMM and ML estimators are used to allow for possible endogeneity of risksharing arrangements. Our findings are consistent with the exercise of liabilityinduced discretion by hospitals, especially regarding use of costly diagnostic imaging. Hospitals facing higher expected litigation costs also use these tests more frequently, after controlling for activity levels, casemix and treatment outcome; the latter indicating that defensive medicine may be present. We also find evidence of fewer new claims against these hospitals, given adverse events, which may indicate the increased use of claims management processes by hospital managers concerned at the expected cost of litigation.Medical malpractice, defensive care, insurance, litigation
A formally verified proof of the prime number theorem
The prime number theorem, established by Hadamard and de la Vall'ee Poussin
independently in 1896, asserts that the density of primes in the positive
integers is asymptotic to 1 / ln x. Whereas their proofs made serious use of
the methods of complex analysis, elementary proofs were provided by Selberg and
Erd"os in 1948. We describe a formally verified version of Selberg's proof,
obtained using the Isabelle proof assistant.Comment: 23 page
The reform of Legal Aid in England and Wales
Legal aid expenditure has risen dramatically in recent years, prompting attention from successive governments. A prominent theme of past and present government reform proposals has been the shifting of risk away from the taxpayer towards lawyers, clients and insurers by altering the means by which legal aid lawyers are paid. This paper explores this theme by presenting information on legal aid expenditure trends over the last two decades and then considering whether payment mechanisms have contributed to this performance. Finally, it reviews previous and current reform proposals in this area. It concludes that, because risk-shifting also alters incentives, it is essential that reform recognises and monitors these.
Knowledge Management
The next step beyond data and information is knowledge. Knowledge originates and is applied by knowledge workers. It includes their experience, values, insights, and contextual information and helps them evaluate and incorporate new experiences and information. People use their knowledge in making decisions. During the last several years, organizations realized they own a vast amount of knowledge and that this knowledge needs to be managed
The Information Needs of Business with Special Application to Managerial Decision Making
Current developments in computing and telecommunications are discussed and the implications for management decision making are explored
Introduction to the Debate on the Core of the Information Systems Field
This editorial introduces the debate between Alter and Benbasat and Zmud about whether IT artifacts or systems in organization are the appropriate model for a core for IS. It also describes the articles on the dedbate by 10 authors and gives some opinions of the editor on the subject
System Integration
Although a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide, the subject is almost never taught in Universities. Yet, it is a prime source of employment for topnotch graduates. The tutorial explores what systems integration is, how it compares with ERP systems, how it can be used strategically, and the open research questions in systems integration
