Signature of a silver phase percolation threshold in microscopically phase separated ternary Ge0.15Se0.85-xAgx (0 <= x <= 0.20) glasses
Temperature modulated Alternating Differential Scanning Calorimetric (ADSC)
studies show that Se rich Ge0.15Se0.85-xAgx (0 <= x <= 0.20) glasses are
microscopically phase separated, containing Ag2Se phases embedded in a
Ge0.15Se0.85 backbone. With increasing silver concentration, Ag2Se phase
percolates in the Ge-Se matrix, with a well-defined percolation threshold at x
= 0.10. A signature of this percolation transition is shown up in the thermal
behavior, as the appearance of two exothermic crystallization peaks. Density,
molar volume and micro-hardness measurements, undertaken in the present study,
also strongly support this view of percolation transition. The super-ionic
conduction observed earlier in these glasses at higher silver proportions, is
likely to be connected with the silver phase percolation.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure
Entropy and Wigner Functions
The properties of an alternative definition of quantum entropy, based on
Wigner functions, are discussed. Such definition emerges naturally from the
Wigner representation of quantum mechanics, and can easily quantify the amount
of entanglement of a quantum state. It is shown that smoothing of the Wigner
function induces an increase in entropy. This fact is used to derive some
simple rules to construct positive definite probability distributions which are
also admissible Wigner functionsComment: 18 page
Overexpression of Protochlorophyllide Oxidoreductase C Regulates Oxidative Stress in Arabidopsis
Light absorbed by colored intermediates of chlorophyll biosynthesis is not utilized in photosynthesis; instead, it is transferred to molecular oxygen, generating singlet oxygen (1O2). As there is no enzymatic detoxification mechanism available in plants to destroy 1O2, its generation should be minimized. We manipulated the concentration of a major chlorophyll biosynthetic intermediate i.e., protochlorophyllide in Arabidopsis by overexpressing the light-inducible protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase C (PORC) that effectively phototransforms endogenous protochlorophyllide to chlorophyllide leading to minimal accumulation of the photosensitizer protochlorophyllide in light-grown plants. In PORC overexpressing (PORCx) plants exposed to high-light, the 1O2 generation and consequent malonedialdehyde production was minimal and the maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II remained unaffected demonstrating that their photosynthetic apparatus and cellular organization were intact. Further, PORCx plants treated with 5-aminolevulinicacid when exposed to light, photo-converted over-accumulated protochlorophyllide to chlorophyllide, reduced the generation of 1O2 and malonedialdehyde production and reduced plasma membrane damage. So PORCx plants survived and bolted whereas, the 5-aminolevulinicacid-treated wild-type plants perished. Thus, overexpression of PORC could be biotechnologically exploited in crop plants for tolerance to 1O2-induced oxidative stress, paving the use of 5-aminolevulinicacid as a selective commercial light-activated biodegradable herbicide. Reduced protochlorophyllide content in PORCx plants released the protochlorophyllide-mediated feed-back inhibition of 5-aminolevulinicacid biosynthesis that resulted in higher 5-aminolevulinicacid production. Increase of 5-aminolevulinicacid synthesis upregulated the gene and protein expression of several downstream chlorophyll biosynthetic enzymes elucidating a regulatory net work of expression of genes involved in 5-aminolevulinicacid and tetrapyrrole biosynthesis
Stabilizing an Attractive Bose-Einstein Condensate by Driving a Surface Collective Mode
Bose-Einstein condensates of Li have been limited in number due to
attractive interatomic interactions. Beyond this number, the condensate
undergoes collective collapse. We study theoretically the effect of driving
low-lying collective modes of the condensate by a weak asymmetric sinusoidally
time-dependent field. We find that driving the radial breathing mode further
destabilizes the condensate, while excitation of the quadrupolar surface mode
causes the condensate to become more stable by imparting quasi-angular momentum
to it. We show that a significantly larger number of atoms may occupy the
condensate, which can then be sustained almost indefinitely. All effects are
predicted to be clearly visible in experiments and efforts are under way for
their experimental realization.Comment: 4 ReVTeX pages + 2 postscript figure
Trajectory versus probability density entropy
We study the problem of entropy increase of the Bernoulli-shift map without
recourse to the concept of trajectory and we discuss whether, and under which
conditions if it does, the distribution density entropy coincides with the
Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, namely, with the trajectory entropy.Comment: 24 page
Fluctuation-dissipation relationship in chaotic dynamics
We consider a general N-degree-of-freedom dissipative system which admits of
chaotic behaviour. Based on a Fokker-Planck description associated with the
dynamics we establish that the drift and the diffusion coefficients can be
related through a set of stochastic parameters which characterize the steady
state of the dynamical system in a way similar to fluctuation-dissipation
relation in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. The proposed relationship is
verified by numerical experiments on a driven double well system.Comment: Revtex, 23 pages, 2 figure

Experimental evidence on promotion of electric and improved biomass cookstoves.
Improved cookstoves (ICS) can deliver "triple wins" by improving household health, local environments, and global climate. Yet their potential is in doubt because of low and slow diffusion, likely because of constraints imposed by differences in culture, geography, institutions, and missing markets. We offer insights about this challenge based on a multiyear, multiphase study with nearly 1,000 households in the Indian Himalayas. In phase I, we combined desk reviews, simulations, and focus groups to diagnose barriers to ICS adoption. In phase II, we implemented a set of pilots to simulate a mature market and designed an intervention that upgraded the supply chain (combining marketing and home delivery), provided rebates and financing to lower income and liquidity constraints, and allowed households a choice among ICS. In phase III, we used findings from these pilots to implement a field experiment to rigorously test whether this combination of upgraded supply and demand promotion stimulates adoption. The experiment showed that, compared with zero purchase in control villages, over half of intervention households bought an ICS, although demand was highly price-sensitive. Demand was at least twice as high for electric stoves relative to biomass ICS. Even among households that received a negligible price discount, the upgraded supply chain alone induced a 28 percentage-point increase in ICS ownership. Although the bundled intervention is resource-intensive, the full costs are lower than the social benefits of ICS promotion. Our findings suggest that market analysis, robust supply chains, and price discounts are critical for ICS diffusion
Location-specific forecast at Sriharikota during the launch of GSLV-F01
The present study was carried out to examine the performance of two high-resolution mesoscale/regional atmospheric models to provide real time short range forecast during the GSLV-F01 launch on 20 September 2004. The main objective was to provide vertical shear of horizontal wind, which is very important for launch operations. The models are integrated to provide forecasts 36 h in advance. The model predictions are compared with observations and their performances are evaluated in terms of statistical skill scores. The mesoscale model of Pennsylvania State University (PSU)/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) MM5 was found to perform better than the High-resolution Regional Model (HRM) though marginally. Performance of MM5 model was further investigated after improvement of model initial condition with insertion of conventional observations into the large-scale global analysis to perform reanalysis at high resolution (horizontal resolution of 9 km). Results indicate significant improvement in model performance with improvement in initial condition
