Searches for Heavy Neutrinos at the CERN SPS

Searches for heavy neutrinos can be successfully performed by fixed target experiments at the CERN SPS. New results obtained by the NA62 and NA48/2 kaon experiments are summarized in this paper. The physics potential of future projects exploiting SPS protons with beam dump facilities to enlarge the sensitivity to heavy neutrinos above the kaon mass limit are also outlined.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, NuPhys2017 conference proceedings, reference added to section

INTOLERANCE OF UNCERTAINTY: FROM TRANSDIAGNOSTIC MODEL TO CLINICAL MANAGEMENT

    Get PDF
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought out in some individuals an intolerance of uncertainty in their current circumstances. Intolerance of uncertainty is a transdiagnostic process that envisages future events as threatening and undesirable, with which the individual has little or no ability to cope. This makes such individuals more vulnerable to worry and negative emotions, as well as to developing various disorders. This article briefly analyzes how this has manifested during the COVID-19 pandemic and outlines some brief therapeutic techniques which have proved useful in patient management

Men Committing Female Crime: Infanticide, family and honor in Italy, 1890-1981

Infanticide is usually considered as a typically female offence. This gendered characterization is often used to explain why, in the second half of the nineteenth century, this crime was transformed from a serious one, punished with death penalty, to a lesser offence. It has been argued that punishment was reduced because of the unfortunate conditions of the murderess. And historical studies have usually portrayed the offender as a woman who was seduced and abandoned. This article will demonstrate instead that Italian legislation, beginning with the first Penal Code in 1890, mandated light punishment above all for the benefit of the men who killed an infant to defend their male honor. This was even more apparent under the Fascist law of 1930 until 1981 when honor was dropped as an extenuating circumstance. Only then infanticide became a female, maternal crime. Yet, the new Italian law has many flaws

    Morphogenesis of rat myotendinous junction

Myotendinous junction (MTJ) is the highly specialized complex which connects the skeletal muscle to the tendon for transmitting the contractile force between the two tissues. The purpose of this study was to investigate the MTJ development and rat EDL was chosen as a model. 1, 15, 30 day animals were considered and the junctions were analyzed by light and electron microscopy. The MTJ interface architecture increased during the development, extending the interaction between muscle and tendon. 1-day-old rats showed disorganized myofibril bundles, spread cytosol and incomplete rough endoplasmic reticulum, features partially improved in 15-day-old rats, and completely developed in 30-day-old animals. These findings indicate that muscle-tendon interface displays, during rat lifetime, numerically increased and longer tendon interdigitations, correlated with an improved organization of both tissues and with a progressive acquirement of full functionalit

A wall between real estate valuation standards and professional appraisal practice: A focus on Italian market

    Get PDF
Real estate appraisal standards provide guidelines for the preparation of reliable valuations. These standards emphasize the central role of market data collection in market-oriented valuation methodologies such as the Market Comparison Approach (MCA), which is the most commonly used. The objective of this study is to highlight the difficulties in data finding, as well as the gap between the standards and the actual appraisal practices in Italy. Thus, a detailed comparison was made between the real estate data considered necessary by the standards and those ones reasonably detectable by appraisers, showing that some important market information is not reachable due to legal, technical and economic factors. Finally, a case study is presented in which the actual appraisal of a residential property is schematically described to support what is claimed with the research question and thus the degree of uncertainty around an estimate judgment

Precision Medicine in Targeted Therapies for Severe Asthma:Is There Any Place for "omics" Technology?

    Get PDF
According to the current guidelines, severe asthma still represents a controversial topic in terms of definition and management. The introduction of novel biological therapies as a treatment option for severe asthmatic patients paved the way to a personalized approach, which aims at matching the appropriate therapy with the different asthma phenotypes. Traditional asthma phenotypes have been decomposing by an increasing number of asthma subclasses based on functional and physiopathological mechanisms. This is possible thanks to the development and application of different omics technologies. The new asthma classification patterns, particularly concerning severe asthma, include an increasing number of endotypes that have been identified using new omics technologies. The identification of endotypes provides new opportunities for the management of asthma symptoms, but this implies that biological therapies which target inflammatory mediators in the frame of specific patterns of inflammation should be developed. However, the pathway leading to a precision approach in asthma treatment is still at its beginning. The aim of this review is providing a synthetic overview of the current asthma management, with a particular focus on severe asthma, in the light of phenotype and endotype approach, and summarizing the current knowledge about “omics” science and their therapeutic relevance in the field of bronchial asthma
