Acceptability and proof of concept of internet-delivered treatment for depression, anxiety, and stress in university students: protocol for an open feasibility trial
BACKGROUND: In recent years, university counseling and mental health services have reported an increase in the number of clients seeking services and in yearly visits. This trend has been observed at many universities, indicating that behavioral and mental health issues pose significant problems for many college students. The aim of this study is to assess the acceptability and proof of concept of internet-delivered treatment for depression, anxiety, and stress for university students. METHODS/DESIGN: The study is an open feasibility trial of the SilverCloud programs for depression (Space from Depression), anxiety (Space from Anxiety), and stress (Space from Stress). All three are 8-module internet-delivered CBT (iCBT) intervention programs. Participants are assigned a supporter who provides weekly feedback on progress and exercises. Participants will complete the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and stress subscale of the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) as the outcome measures for the depression, anxiety, and stress interventions, respectively. Other outcomes include measures of acceptability of, and satisfaction, with the intervention. Data will be collected at baseline, 8Â weeks and 3-month follow-up. DISCUSSION: It is anticipated that the study will inform the researchers and service personnel of the programs' potential to reduce depression, anxiety, and stress in a student population as well as the protocols to be employed in a future trial. In addition, it will provide insight into students' engagement with the programs, their user experience, and their satisfaction with the online delivery format
Photometry and the Metallicity Distribution of the Outer Halo of M31
We have conducted a wide-field CCD-mosaic study of the resolved red-giant
branch (RGB) stars of M31, in a field located 20 kpc from the nucleus along the
SE minor axis. In our (I, V-I) color-magnitude diagram, RGB stars in the top
three magnitudes of the M31 halo are strongly present. Photometry of a more
distant control field to subtract field contamination is used to derive the
`cleaned' luminosity function and metallicity distribution function (MDF) of
the M31 halo field. From the color distribution of the foreground Milky Way
halo stars, we find a reddening E(V-I)= 0.10 +/- 0.02 for this field, and from
the luminosity of the RGB tip, we determine a distance modulus (m-M)_o = 24.47
+/- 0.12 (= 783 +/- 43 kpc). The MDF is derived from interpolation within an
extensive new grid of RGB models (Vandenberg et al. 2000). The MDF is dominated
by a moderately high-metallicity population ([m/H]~ -0.5) found previously in
more interior M31 halo/bulge fields, and is much more metal-rich than the
[m/H]~ -1.5 level in the Milky Way halo. A significant (~30% - 40%, depending
on AGB star contribution) metal-poor population is also present. To first
order, the shape of the MDF resembles that predicted by a simple,
single-component model of chemical evolution starting from primordial gas with
an effective yield y=0.0055. It strongly resembles the MDF recently found for
the outer halo of the giant elliptical NGC 5128 (Harris et al. 2000), though
NGC 5128 has an even lower fraction of low-metallicity stars. Intriguingly, in
both NGC 5128 and M31, the metallicity distribution of the globular clusters in
M31 does not match the halo stars; the clusters are far more heavily weighted
to metal-poor objects. We suggest similarities in the formation and early
evolution of massive, spheroidal stellar systems.Comment: to appear in the Astronomical Journal; 43 pages, including 15 figure
Environmental Dependence of the Fundamental Plane of Galaxy Clusters
Galaxy clusters approximate a planar (FP) distribution in a three-dimensional
parameter space which can be characterized by optical luminosity, half-light
radius, and X-ray luminosity. Using a high-quality catalog of cluster
redshifts, we find the nearest neighbor cluster for those common to an FP study
and the cluster catalog. Examining scatter about the FP, we find 99.2%
confidence that it is dependent on nearest neighbor distance. Our study of
X-Ray clusters finds that those with high central gas densities are
systematically closer to neighbor clusters. If we combine results here with
those of Fritsch and Buchert, we find an explanation for some of our previous
conclusions: Clusters in close proximity to other clusters are more likely to
have massive cooling flows because they are more relaxed and have higher

Star Spot Induced Radial Velocity Variability in LkCa 19
We describe a new radial velocity survey of T Tauri stars and present the
first results. Our search is motivated by an interest in detecting massive
young planets, as well as investigating the origin of the brown dwarf desert.
As part of this survey, we discovered large-amplitude, periodic, radial
velocity variations in the spectrum of the weak line T Tauri star LkCa 19.
Using line bisector analysis and a new simulation of the effect of star spots
on the photometric and radial velocity variability of T Tauri stars, we show
that our measured radial velocities for LkCa19 are fully consistent with
variations caused by the presence of large star spots on this rapidly rotating
young star. These results illustrate the level of activity-induced radial
velocity noise associated with at least some very young stars. This
activity-induced noise will set lower limits on the mass of a companion

Effect of left atrial and ventricular abnormalities on renal transplant recipient outcomeâa single-center study
Background:
Premature cardiovascular (CV) death is the commonest cause of death in renal transplant recipients. Abnormalities of left ventricular (LV) structure (collectively termed uremic cardiomyopathy) and left atrial (LA) dilation, a marker of fluid status and diastolic function, are risk factors for reduced survival in patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD). In the present analysis, we studied the impact of pre-transplant LA and LV abnormalities on survival after successful renal transplantation (RT).<p></p>
Methods:
One hundred nineteen renal transplant recipients (first transplant, deceased donors) underwent cardiovascular MRI (CMR) as part of CV screening prior to inclusion on the waiting list. Data regarding transplant function and patient survival after transplantation were collected.<p></p>
Results:
Median post-transplant follow-up was 4.3 years (interquartile range (IQR) 1.9, 6.2). During the post-transplant period, 13 patients returned to dialysis after graft failure and 23 patients died with a functioning graft. Survival analyses, censoring for patients returning to dialysis, showed that pre-transplant LV hypertrophy and elevated LA volume were significantly associated with reduced survival after transplantation. Multivariate Cox regression analyses demonstrated that longer waiting time, poorer transplant function, presence of LV hypertrophy and higher LA volume on screening CMR and female sex were independent predictors of death in patients with a functioning transplant.<p></p>
Conclusions:
Presence of LVH and higher LA volume are significant, independent predictors of death in patients who are wait-listed and proceed with renal transplantation.<p></p>

Genetic structure and diversity of a rare woodland bat, Myotis bechsteinii: comparison of continental Europe and Britain
The Bechsteinâs bat (Myotis bechsteinii) is a rare sedentary bat considered to be highly reliant on the presence of ancient woodland. Understanding the genetic connectivity and population structure of such elusive mammals is important for assessing their conservation status. In this study, we report the genetic diversity and structure of M. bechsteinii across Britain and Europe. Assessments were made using 14 microsatellite markers and a 747 bp region of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Nuclear DNA (microsatellites) showed high levels of genetic diversity and little inbreeding across the species range, though genetic diversity was slightly lower in Britain than in mainland Europe. Bayesian and spatial PCA analysis showed a clear separation between the British and European sites. Within Europe, the Italian population south of the Alps was isolated from the other sites. In Britain, there was genetic structuring between the northern and southern part of the geographical range. Despite there being little genetic divergence in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences throughout most of Europe, the mtDNA patterns in Britain confirmed this separation of northern and southern populations. Such genetic structuring within Britainâin the absence of any obvious physical barriersâsuggests that other factors such as land-use may limit gene-flow
