Acute fulminant myocarditis at autopsy: A clinical masquerade?

    Get PDF
Background: Myocarditis is a diagnostic challenge in cardiology. The diagnosis is frequently made post-mortem, with no clinical evidence of myocardial failure. Autopsy studies report a frequency of myocarditis ranging from 0.11-0.55% in the general population. Myocarditis is presents with varied clinical manifestations, ranging from asymptomatic to sudden cardiac death, sometimes mimicking the Myocardial Infarction (MI). Case Summary: A 55 years old male presented with sudden onset of chest pain, breathlessness at rest and flu like symptoms 5-6 days prior to admission. There was tachycardia with low Systolic blood pressure and muffled heart sounds. ECG showed ST segment & T wave changes. CK-MB was moderately raised. Though clinically diagnosed as MI and treated, patient expired the next day. On autopsy, gross examination of heart revealed no significant findings. Histological examination revealed fulminant myocarditis involving right ventricle, interventricular septum, left ventricular wall and A-V Node. Conclusion: It is not uncommon to find Myocarditis patients presenting with manifestations of MI and these cases often misdiagnosed as MI. In such cases, myocarditis should be considered as a differential diagnosis. Endomyocardial biopsies and histological examination of the myocardium is absolutely necessary for reliable diagnosis of the disease

Gravitational Collapse in Higher Dimensional Husain Space-Time

We investigate exact solution in higher dimensional Husain model for a null fluid source with pressure pp and density ρ\rho are related by the following relations (i) p=kρp=k\rho, (ii) p=kρB(v)ραp=k\rho-\frac{B(v)}{\rho^{\alpha}} (variable modified Chaplygin) and (iii) p=kραp=k\rho^{\alpha} (polytropic). We have studied the nature of singularity in gravitational collapse for the above equations of state and also for different choices of the of the parameters kk and BB namely, (i) k=0k=0, B=B= constant (generalized Chaplygin), (ii) B=B= constant (modified Chaplygin). It is found that the nature of singularity is independent of these choices of different equation of state except for variable Chaplygin model. Choices of various parameters are shown in tabular form. Finally, matching of Szekeres model with exterior Husain space-time is done.Comment: 12 latex pages, No figure, RevTex styl

    Karnataka Focus Group Discussions Data

    No full text
A series of focus group discussions (FGDs) to elicit the local knowledge about the agricultural and wild biodiversity present in the study areas in order to generate: (a) an inventory (list) of all useful plant, and animal species used by local communities for human food, animal feed, medicine, fuel, housing, farming tools, etc. and their local names; (b) an inventory of all foods consumed; (c) an inventory of species and products bought and sold in markets that people in the village attend. Two FGDs per village in three villages. FGDs were held separately for men and women in order to collect gender disaggregated data. In each of the three villages, two focus group discussions were held separately. One with men and the other with women. Each group will deal with the three aspects for discussion: Useful biological diversity in the production system; Market diversity; and Dietary diversity. There were between 10-16 participants in each group. Each group tried to include a cross-section of individuals involved in agricultural production or at least collecting useful plants from common lands and the wild, representing different levels of access to land (land owners, local land renters and migrant land renters), different ethnic groups present in the village and different age groups (special emphasis should be placed to include younger farmers). For each group there were two facilitators, one to guide the exercise and the other to document the process (take notes, photographs, etc.). The data were elicited using the four-square methodology explained in the Protocol document. Three villages in the Bijapur District: Mannur, Nandyal, Balaganur

In-vitro Evaluation of Different Chemicals, Bioagents and Botanicals against Xanthomonas citri subsp citri

Citrus canker caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp citri is one of the important disease in kagzi lime affecting the quality and market value of the fruits. The inhibitory activity of chemicals, bioagents and botanicals were evaluated against Xanthomonas citri subsp citri under in-vitro condition. Among the bactericides and fungicides tested 2-bromo- 2-nitropropane-1, 3-diol and copper hydroxide showed maximum inhibition of 16.39mm and 15.77mm respectively. However, the bioagents VK-6B and KK-3A recorded >90% inhibition among the thirteen bioagents evaluated. Similarly 21 different botanical were evaluated for their inhibition efficacy which revealed that Prosopis juliflora extract showed highest average inhibition of 10.83mm and 15.21mm in aqueous and alcoholic extracts respectively

Histopathological study of polypoidal lesions of the nasal cavity - A cross sectional study

    No full text
Background & Objectives: Lesions of nasal cavity present difficulty in their diagnosis, prognosis and management because of unusual clinicopathological features. This study was done to evaluate the nasal polyps with regard to age, sex distribution and histologic types. Methods: The present study included 70 polypoidal lesions of the nasal cavity. The study period constituted from January 2003 to December 2006. All the tissues were fixed in 10% formalin, processed stained with H & E and studied for various histopathological features. Results: Simple polyps accounted for 88.57% of total cases and neoplastic polyps accounted for 11.42%. Of the simple polyps non allergic polyps accounted for 58.06% and allergic polyps for 41.93%.Seventy five percent of neoplastic polyps were benign and 25% were malignant. All the malignant polyps in the study were squamous cell carcinomas. Interpretation & Conclusion: The majority of the nasal polyps sent for histology are simple polyps. A variety of benign and malignant lesions of the nasal cavity may present as polyps, hence all polyps need histological examination

Karnataka Diet Diversity and Food Security for Agricultural Biodiversity Assessment

    No full text
The questionnaire elicited information on foods consumed and their sources for selected mothers and children of the households interviewed for the ABD-Assessment (24-hour recall); information on young and child feeding practices; and on household food secuirty, and risk preferences of mother. In the same households selected for the ABD-Assessment, one woman per household was selected. The first choice of respondent was a woman that had a child between 6 and 59 months old; if no woman was available with a child between 6 and 59 months, the interview was perfomred with the woman that usually takes care of the food preparation in the household. In case there were more women with children between 6 and 59 months living in the household, one of them was selected randomly . The same procedure was done if more than one child of the selected woman is eligible to participate in the study. For the food consumed by mother and child, the period was the previous 24 hours. Interviews took place between the 25 of August and 30 September 2014 (2 cases 30, 31 of October). For the household food security data refer to the previous 30 days of the day of the interview. For the infant and child feeding practices, they are in general. Three villages in the Bijapur District: Mannur, Nandyal, Balaganur were surveyed
