The Real Exchange Rate in India: Determinants and Targeting

    Get PDF
This paper studies the behaviour of the real exchange rate (RER) in India. The first part investigates the role of important macroeconomic (behaviour and policy) variables in explaining the movement of the RER. It is found that the investment-gdp ratio, the overall fiscal deficit of the public sector and the nominal exchange rates are important explanatory variables. The second part of the paper seeks to determine whether real exchange rate targeting has been used in India as a tool in enhancing the competitiveness of the tradable sector. It is found that this is indeed the case, and moreover, the correlation between inflation and nominal devaluations is found to be small.

Flux Tube Model Signals for Baryon Correlations in Heavy Ion Collisions

The flux tube model offers a pictorial description of what happens during the deconfinement phase transition in QCD. The 3-point vertices of a flux tube network lead to formation of baryons upon hadronisation. Therefore, correlations in the baryon number distribution at the last scattering surface are related to the preceding pattern of the flux tube vertices, and provide a signature of the nearby deconfinement phase transition. I discuss the nature of the expected signal, which should be observable in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC.Comment: LaTeX, 9 pages, 5 figures, (v2) Several arguments expanded for clarity, (v3) Minor typesetting changes, published versio

A rare case of para-testicular dedifferentiated liposarcoma: a diagnostic dilemma

    Get PDF
Paratesticular dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DD-LPS) are rare neoplasms. It has been estimated that 12% of DD-LPS occur in the paratesticular region, while the retroperitoneum is the most common site for this tumor. Herein, we presented a case of a 66-year-old male with a history of pedal edema and right scrotal swelling, CT scan shows a solid mass arising from the right side of the scrotum. Following this, a radical orchiectomy of the right testis with mass was performed, and after thorough microscopic and immunohistochemistry positive for MDM2 and CDK4, the diagnosis of low-grade dedifferentiated liposarcoma was given. This case report expands the morphologic spectrum of dedifferentiated liposarcoma and emphasizes the need to consider these tumours in the differential diagnosis of other neoplasms

Comparative Pharmaceutical Study of Chyavanprasha Yoga as described in Charaka Samhita and Sharngadhara Samhita

    Get PDF
Chyavanprasha is widely consumed in India as a dietary supplement. “Ayurveda”, as all of us know is the science of life. The ancient sages discovered different kinds of Ayurvedic medicines after continuous studies, observations, experiments, trials and judgments. Ayurveda gives us the knowledge of health for all. There are various references for Chyavanprasha Avaleha in Ayurvedic texts. Among them, references in Charaka Samhita and Sharngadhara Samhita are significant. The difference found in these two references is in the use of the medium used for the Paka (frying) of the Amalaki pulp. Sharngadhara Samhita mentions the use of Ghrita while Charaka Samhita mentions the use of both Taila and Ghrita for the frying. Chyavanprasha is indicated in various disorders like Swarakshaya, Uroroga, Hrudroga, Vatarakta, Pipasa, Mootra and Shukra Sthanagatha Dosha. It also improves Medhashakti, Smaranashakti and increases the life span. It is very good Rasayana and Shukra Dhatuvardhaka (Vajikarana). Hence, to evaluate the difference in the pharmaceutical preparation and the organoleptic characters of the finished products the study was undertaken

Distributions of the Conductance and its Parametric Derivatives in Quantum Dots

Full distributions of conductance through quantum dots with single-mode leads are reported for both broken and unbroken time-reversal symmetry. Distributions are nongaussian and agree well with random matrix theory calculations that account for a finite dephasing time, τϕ\tau_\phi, once broadening due to finite temperature TT is also included. Full distributions of the derivatives of conductance with respect to gate voltage P(dg/dVg)P(dg/dV_g) are also investigated.Comment: 4 pages (REVTeX), 4 eps figure

Absence of bimodal peak spacing distribution in the Coulomb blockade regime

Using exact diagonalization numerical methods, as well as analytical arguments, we show that for the typical electron densities in chaotic and disordered dots the peak spacing distribution is not bimodal, but rather Gaussian. This is in agreement with the experimental observations. We attribute this behavior to the tendency of an even number of electrons to gain on-site interaction energy by removing the spin degeneracy. Thus, the dot is predicted to show a non trivial electron number dependent spin polarization. Experimental test of this hypothesis based on the spin polarization measurements are proposed.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in PRL - a few small change

Integrated nutrient management in fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.)

    Get PDF
A field experiment was conducted at Jagudan (Gujarat) to study the effect of integrated nutrientmanagement (INM) practices in fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum). Growth and yieldattributes as well as seed and straw yields of fenugreek were significantly influenced by INMtreatments. Application of recommended dose through inorganic form with phosphatesolublizing bacteria @ 5 kg ha-1 gave higher growth and yield attributes and was at par withrecommended dose of fertilizer + Azotobacter sp. @ 5 kg ha-1 + 5 t farm yard manure ha-1 andrecommended dose of nitrogen + phosphate solublizing bacteria @ 5 kg ha-1 which weresignificantly superior to other treatments except test weight. This treatment also recordedsignificantly the highest grain and straw yields. The maximum net realization and benefit:costratio were obtained when the crop was fertilized with full dose of nitrogen and phosphoruswith phosphate solublizing bacteria @ 5 kg ha-1. &nbsp

Evaluation of stable and non shattering isabgol cultivar - Gujarat isabgol 4

Isabgol growing area was surveyed during 2009-10 and selected genotypes were evaluated in preliminary evaluation trial (PET) during 2010-13 and in large scale varietal trial (LSVT) during 2013-15. It was found that JI-09-21 recorded better growth and yield characters and yield over check Gujarat Isabgol 3. The JI-09-21 did not shatter much even after water dripping and recommended for cultivation as Gujarat Isabgol 4
