    Biennialism and Vernalization-Promoted Flowering in \u3cem\u3eHyoscyamus niger\u3c/em\u3e: a Comparison with \u3cem\u3eArabidopsis\u3c/em\u3e

There are genetic similarities between the biennial growth habit of Hyoscyamus niger (H. niger) and winter annual ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana, including the response to demethylating agents. One focus of our research group at Marquette is to determine whether FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC) homologs or FLC-related MADS-box genes are involved in biennialism of H. niger. This review also summarizes our initial characterization of expression profiles of 4 groups of H. niger MADS-box genes. Our results suggest that B-class floral homeotic gene homologs of H. niger are differentially expressed in flowers of annual and vernalized, biennial plants

Triad of Acute Pancreatitis Coexisting with Diabetic Ketoacidosis and Very Severe Hypertriglyceridemia Successfully Resolved with Insulin Therapy Alone

    Get PDF
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is known to cause mild elevations in triglyceride levels. Severe hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) is a well-known cause of acute pancreatitis; however, in unique cases, DKA has been shown to cause severe HTG leading to the development of acute pancreatitis (AP). HTG causing AP only accounts for 1-4% of cases of AP From the few cases in literature that have reported this triad of DKA, HTG, and AP, even fewer have shown to be successfully treated with insulin therapy alone with the severe degree of HTG that we discuss. In our case, we have treated a triad of DKA, AP and severe HTG with a value of 16076 mg/dL with insulin therapy alone, which has not been documented in our literature search

Multiple Myeloma with Dual Expression of Kappa and Lambda Light Chains

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignancy of plasma cells that accounts for approximately 1 to 2 percent of all cancers and about 17% of all hematologic malignancies. Plasma cells normally produce antibodies and provide a defense mechanism for the body to fight infections. Antibodies typically consist of two heavy chains (IgG, IgA, IgM, IgD and IgE) and two light chains (kappa and lambda). Most cases of MM have malignant plasma cells producing monoclonal (M) proteins, most common being IgG about 52% of the time (1). Only about 2% of these myeloma cases were also found to secrete more than one paraprotein and classified as biclonal/biphenotypic plasma cell myeloma (2). Here we report a case of a woman who presented with lower back pain that was found to have biphenotypic multiple myeloma with a coexpression of kappa and lambda light chains

Paying for College Success: An Introduction to the Performance-Based Scholarship Demonstration

    Get PDF
This policy brief describes a demonstration launched by MDRC in four states in 2008 to evaluate whether performance-based scholarships -- paid contingent on attaining academic benchmarks -- are an effective way to improve persistence and academic success among low-income college students. The demonstration builds on positive results from an earlier MDRC study in Louisiana

Skin mucus proteins of lumpsucker (Cyclopterus lumpus)

    Get PDF
Fish skin mucus serves as a first line of defense against pathogens and external stressors. In this study the proteomic profile of lumpsucker skin mucus was characterized using 2D gels coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Mucosal proteins were identified by homology searches across the databases SwissProt, NCBInr and vertebrate EST. The identified proteins were clustered into ten groups based on their gene ontology biological process in PANTHER (www.patherdb.org). Calmodulin, cystatin-B, histone H2B, peroxiredoxin1, apolipoprotein A1, natterin-2, 14-3-3 protein, alfa enolase, pentraxin, warm temperature acclimation 65 kDa (WAP65kDa) and heat shock proteins were identified. Several of the proteins are known to be involved in immune and/or stress responses. Proteomic profile established in this study could be a benchmark for differential proteomics studies
