Stored mafic/ultramafic crust and early Archean mantle depletion
Both early and late Archean rocks from greenstone belts and felsic gneiss complexes exhibit positive epsilon(Nd) values of +1 to +5 by 3.5 Ga, demonstrating that a depleted mantle reservoir existed very early. The amount of preserved pre-3.0 Ga continental crust cannot explain such high epsilon values in the depleted residue unless the volume of residual mantle was very small: a layer less than 70 km thick by 3.0 Ga. Repeated and exclusive sampling of such a thin layer, especially in forming the felsic gneiss complexes, is implausible. Extraction of enough continental crust to deplete the early mantle and its destructive recycling before 3.0 Ga ago requires another implausibility, that the sites of crustal generation of recycling were substantially distinct. In contrast, formation of mafic or ultramafic crust analogous to present-day oceanic crust was continuous from very early times. Recycled subducted oceanic lithosphere is a likely contributor to present-day hotspot magmas, and forms a reservoir at least comparable in volume to continental crust. Subduction of an early mafic/ultramafic oceanic crust and temporary storage rather than immediate mixing back into undifferentiated mantle may be responsible for the depletion and high epsilon(Nd) values of the Archean upper mantle
Pharmacogenetics of ophthalmic topical β-blockers
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. The primary glaucoma risk factor is elevated intraocular pressure. Topical β-blockers are affordable and widely used to lower intraocular pressure. Genetic variability has been postulated to contribute to interpersonal differences in efficacy and safety of topical β-blockers. This review summarizes clinically significant polymorphisms that have been identified in the β-adrenergic receptors (ADRB1, ADRB2 and ADRB3). The implications of polymorphisms in CYP2D6 are also discussed. Although the candidate-gene approach has facilitated significant progress in our understanding of the genetic basis of glaucoma treatment response, most drug responses involve a large number of genes, each containing multiple polymorphisms. Genome-wide association studies may yield a more comprehensive set of polymorphisms associated with glaucoma outcomes. An understanding of the genetic mechanisms associated with variability in individual responses to topical β-blockers may advance individualized treatment at a lower cost
Seismic Design Basis — The UK Regulatory Position for New Nuclear Reactors
The purpose of this paper is to outline the seismic regulatory requirements relating to the site licensing of new nuclear power installations in the UK, and to describe the background and justification of the seismic design basis level for such installations. It outlines the potential seismic related hazards which should be covered, the factors which are considered important in establishing the level of hazard under consideration, and the techniques which could be used for hazard evaluation. In addition, the paper covers the level of uncertainty associated with the methodology and analytical techniques used in evaluating the seismic hazards
Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication post-oesophageal stenting: an unusual case.
Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication post-oesophageal stenting is uncommon and yet to be reported. We report the case of a 57-year-old palliative lady who underwent surgery for symptomatic relief of severe gastrooesophageal reflux post-oesophageal stenting. Surgery was carried out successfully with no complications. On the evening post-surgery she was able to lie supine for the first time in months without symptoms of reflux. In conclusion, surgery is still valuable and may play an important role, even in a palliative setting

Dehydroquinate synthase (DHQS) catalyses the second step of the shikimate pathway to aromatic compounds. DHQS from the archaeal hyperthermophile Pyrococcus furiosus was insoluble when expressed in Escherichia coli but was partially solubilised when KCl was included in the cell lysis buffer. A purification procedure was developed, involving lysis by sonication at 30 • C followed by a heat treatment at 70 • C and anion exchange chromatography. Purified recombinant P. furiosus DHQS is a dimer with a subunit Mr of 37,397 (determined by electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry) and is active over broad pH and temperature ranges. The kinetic parameters are K M (3-deoxy-D-arabino-heptulosonate 7-phosphate) 3.7 μM and k cat 3.0 sec −1 at 60 • C and pH 6.8. EDTA inactivates the enzyme, and enzyme activity is restored by several divalent metal ions including (in order of decreasing effectiveness) Cd 2+ , Co 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Mn 2+ . High activity of a DHQS in the presence of Cd 2+ has not been reported for enzymes from other sources, and may be related to the bioavailability of Cd 2+ for P. furiosus. This study is the first biochemical characterisation of a DHQS from a thermophilic source. Furthermore, the characterisation of this hyperthermophilic enzyme was carried out at elevated temperatures using an enzyme-coupled assay
Symmetry effects on the static and dynamic properties of coupled magnetic oscillators
The effect of symmetry on the resonance spectra of antiferromagnetically
coupled oscillators has attracted new interest with the discovery of
symmetry-breaking induced anti-crossings. Here, we experimentally characterise
the resonance spectrum of a synthetic antiferromagnet Pt/CoFeB/Ru/CoFeB/Pt,
where we are able to independently tune the effective magnetisation of the two
coupled magnets. To model our results we apply the mathematical methods of
group theory to the solutions of the Landau Lifshitz Gilbert equation. This
general approach, usually applied to quantum mechanical systems, allows us to
identify the main features of the resonance spectrum in terms of symmetry
breaking and to make a direct comparison with crystal antiferromagnets
Growth, strain, and spin-orbit torques in epitaxial Ni-Mn-Sb films sputtered on GaAs
We report current-induced spin torques in epitaxial NiMnSb films on a commercially available epiready GaAs substrate. The NiMnSb was grown by cosputtering from three targets using optimized parameters. The films were processed into microscale bars to perform current-induced spin-torque measurements. Magnetic dynamics were excited by microwave currents, and electric voltages along the bars were measured to analyze the symmetry of the current-induced torques. We found that the extracted symmetry of the spin torques matches those expected from spin-orbit interaction in a tetragonally distorted half-Heusler crystal. Both fieldlike and dampinglike torques are observed in all the samples characterized, and the efficiency of the current-induced torques is comparable to that of ferromagnetic metal/heavy-metal bilayers
