No Spare Parts: Sharing Part Detectors for Image Categorization
This work aims for image categorization using a representation of distinctive
parts. Different from existing part-based work, we argue that parts are
naturally shared between image categories and should be modeled as such. We
motivate our approach with a quantitative and qualitative analysis by
backtracking where selected parts come from. Our analysis shows that in
addition to the category parts defining the class, the parts coming from the
background context and parts from other image categories improve categorization
performance. Part selection should not be done separately for each category,
but instead be shared and optimized over all categories. To incorporate part
sharing between categories, we present an algorithm based on AdaBoost to
jointly optimize part sharing and selection, as well as fusion with the global
image representation. We achieve results competitive to the state-of-the-art on
object, scene, and action categories, further improving over deep convolutional
neural networks
Nurturing the young shoots of talent: Using action research for exploration and theory building
This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in European Early Childhood Education Research Journal, 19(4), 433-450, 2011, copyright Taylor & Francis, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/1350293X.2011.623515.This paper reports the outcomes of a set of action research projects carried out by teacher researchers in 14 local education authorities in England, working collaboratively with university tutors, over a period of three years. The common aim of all the projects was to explore practical ways of nurturing the gifts and talents of children aged four–seven years. The project was funded by the Department of Education and Skills in England as part of the government's gifted and talented programme. The project teachers felt that their understanding of issues relating to nurturing the gifts and talents of younger children was enhanced through their engagement in the project. It was possible to map the findings of the projects to the English government's National Quality Standards for gifted and talented education which include: (1) identification; (2) effective provision in the classroom; (3) enabling curriculum entitlement and choice; (4) assessment for learning; (5) engaging with community, families and beyond. The findings are also analysed within the framework of good practice in educating children in the first years of schooling. Participating practitioners felt that action research offered them a suitable methodology to explore the complexity of the topic of giftedness through cycles of planning, action and reflection and personal theory building
Upper critical field of CeCoIn5
We present a detailed analysis of the upper critical field for CeCoIn5 under
high pressure. We show that, consistently with other measurements, this system
shows a decoupling between maximum of the superconducting transition
temperature Tc and maximum pairing strength. This puts forward CeCoIn5 as an
important paradigm for this class of unconventional, strongly correlated

Multilevel Contracts for Trusted Components
This article contributes to the design and the verification of trusted
components and services. The contracts are declined at several levels to cover
then different facets, such as component consistency, compatibility or
correctness. The article introduces multilevel contracts and a
design+verification process for handling and analysing these contracts in
component models. The approach is implemented with the COSTO platform that
supports the Kmelia component model. A case study illustrates the overall

The viscous slowing down of supercooled liquids as a temperature-controlled superArrhenius activated process: a description in terms of frustration-limited domains
We propose that the salient feature to be explained about the glass
transition of supercooled liquids is the temperature-controlled superArrhenius
activated nature of the viscous slowing down, more strikingly seen in
weakly-bonded, fragile systems. In the light of this observation, the relevance
of simple models of spherically interacting particles and that of models based
on free-volume congested dynamics are questioned. Finally, we discuss how the
main aspects of the phenomenology of supercooled liquids, including the
crossover from Arrhenius to superArrhenius activated behavior and the
heterogeneous character of the relaxation, can be described by an

Une meilleure gestion de l'eau pluviale par les techniques culturales (Sud du Siné Saloum, Sénégal)
Un programme de recherche a été élaboré par l'ISRA, le CIRAD et l'ORSTOM, pour remédier à la dégradation de l'écosystème du bassin arachidier sénégalais (sud du Siné Saloum). Dans un premier temps, une phase de diagnostic a permis de repérer l'ensemble des facteurs en jeu dans ce processus. Il est la conséquence de l'évolution du système de production local qui provoque un déséquilibre du milieu, beaucoup accentué par les conditions pédologiques et climatiques actuelles. Dans un second temps, l'étude a été réalisée dans l'optique de mettre en place un référentiel technique et socio-économique pour analyser l'efficacité, les possibilités de réalisation et le transfert des solutions proposées en milieu paysan. L'aspect novateur réside dans la formalisation d'une démarche scientifique commune aux approches techniques et socio-économiques. Cette étude permet d'illustrer l'approche adoptée en recherche développement. A terme, on peut espérer - par ce type de démarche scientifique - pouvoir fournir l'ensemble des éléments qui permettraient de constituer un conseil en gestion de l'eau pour la région concerné
RKKY and magnetic field interactions in coupled Kondo quantum dots
We investigate theoretically the transport properties of two independent
artificial Kondo impurities. They are coupled together via a tunable
Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) interaction. For strong enough
antiferromagnetic RKKY interaction, the impurity density of states increases
with the applied in-plane magnetic field. This effect can be used to
distinguish between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic RKKY interactions.
These results may be relevant to explain some features of recent experiments by
