    Enhancement Effects of Biosurfactant Produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa MTCC 2297 and Pseudomonas fluorescens on Sugar Cane Bagasse Composting

    Biosurfactant produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa MTCC2297 and Pseudomonas fluorescens (a Mangrove forest isolate) was added to the Sugar cane bagasse decomposing process to initiate and enhance the production of reducing sugars. Both isolates produced a glycolipid biosurfactant, namely a rhamnolipid that was confirmed by biochemical and analytical studies. The surface tension of fermentation broth reduced from 73 to 34.2 mN/m by P. aeruginosa MTCC 2297 and from 76 to 29 mN/m by P. fluorescens. Sugar cane bagasse decomposing process was attempted by two different methods, adding pure rhamnolipid and on-site production of it were compared. The study revealed that rhamnolipid concentration of 0.75gl-1 was  optimum for composting process and the optimum temperature for compost pile production was 32°Cfor the first 48h subsequently 35°C for the next 48h. At the optimum temperature for this two-stage fermentation, the production of reducing sugar could be increased to 15.73 gl-1 for P. aeruginosa MTCC 2297 and for the P. fluorescens  reducing sugar increased to 15.88 gl-1,  both experiments resulted  in higher values than  that of the treatment without rhamnolipid sample. The results indicate that application biosurfactant could possibly reduce the composting period.     Participation of ATMA (Agricultural Technology Management Agency) Members in Group Activities and Promotion of Sustainable Agricultural Practices in Karaikal District, Puducherry

    A study was conducted in among five selected ATMA (Agricultural Technology Management Agency) groups. A total of 100 farmers from five groups were selected by employing random sampling. Participation was studied in three dimensions viz., group sustainability, sustainable agricultural practices and participation in post harvest technologies. The study reveals that majority of the members belong to medium level of participation in sustainable agricultural practices and participate more in group activities viz., group planning, maintaining transparency, decision making, shouldering responsibilities planning, decision making and auditing. Further, the study reveals that information source utilisation and information sharing behaviour of the group members showed a positive and significant relation with the participation of ATMA group members in sustainable agricultural practices. Addition of new members and lack in guidance were the problems expressed by the respondents. Group promoting initiatives and training on sustainable function of groups were the suggestions offered by the members of the group

    Current-driven orbital order-disorder transition in LaMnO3

    We report significant influence of electric current on the orbital order-disorder transition in LaMnO3. The transition temperature T_OO, thermal hysteresis in the resistivity (rho) versus temperature (T) plot around T_OO, and latent heat L associated with the transition decrease with the increase in current density. Eventually, at a critical current density, L reaches zero. The transition zone, on the other hand, broadens with the increase in current density. The states at ordered, disordered, and transition zone are all found to be stable within the time window from ~10^-3 to ~10^4 seconds.Comment: 7 pages including 5 figures; resolution of Fig.1 is better here than the published versio

    Improvement of Weld Bead Characteristics in Gas Metal Arc Welding of SA515 Carbon Steel by Applying Alternating Shielding Gas Flow Technique

    High service temperature of pressure vessel components necessitates the use of welded SA515 grade carbon steel components. The gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process using CO2 as shielding gas is known for its undesirable spatter behaviour and inferior weld quality. The alternating shielding gas flow (ASGF) technique is proposed in this study using the shielding gases, viz. CO2 and argon to overcome this difficulty. The welding current, stand-off distance, and shielding gas flow were all varied to improve the bead-on-plate profile geometry. The bead profile parameters such as depth of penetration, bead width, and bead height are considered as weld bead parameters. The following methods are used: correlation analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA), modelling, and grey relational analysis (GRA). According to the findings, the welding current and ASGF are the most influential parameters impacting the weld bead characteristics. By increasing the welding current, the bead profile parameters increase linearly. The geometry of the bead profile was improved by using the GRA

    Charge-monopole versus Gravitational Scattering at Planckian Energies

    The amplitude for the scattering of a point magnetic monopole and a point charge, at centre-of-mass energies much larger than the masses of the particles, and in the limit of low momentum transfer, is shown to be proportional to the (integer-valued) monopole strength, assuming the Dirac quantization condition for the monopole-charge system. It is demonstrated that, for small momentum transfer, charge-monopole electromagnetic effects remain comparable to those due to the gravitational interaction between the particles even at Planckian centre-of-mass energies.Comment: 9 pages, revtex, IMSc/93-4
