    Blind adaptive near-far resistant receivers for DS/CDMA multi-user communication systems

    Code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems have multiple users that simultaneously share a common channel using pre-assigned signature waveforms. The conventional receiver suffers from the near-far problem when the received signal power of the desired user is weaker than those of the other users. Optimum and suboptimum multi-user detectors outperform the conventional receiver at the expense of a significant increase in complexity and need for side-information about interfering users. Complexity of these detectors may not be acceptable for many practical applications and communication security may restrict the distribution of all users\u27 signature waveforms to all the receivers;For a single-user receiver, the multi-user detection problem is viewed as an interference suppression problem. This dissertation presents a cost-constraint strategy to implement adaptive single-user receivers that suppress the multiple-access interference without using training sequences. A constrained LMS algorithm that converges to a near-optimum solution by using the received signal and some known properties of the desired signal is developed. The constrained LMS receiver is useful for static CDMA detection where the channel accessed by the desired user is time-invariant. The dissertation also develops an adaptive space-alternating generalized EM (SAGE) algorithm. This algorithm jointly updates estimates of filter weights and adaptive reference signal in a sequential manner. The SAGE receiver out-performs the existing: blind receiver that employ the constrained output-power-minimizing algorithm while using the same amount of information. The SAGE receiver is applicable to dynamic CDMA detection where the channel accessed by the desired user is time-varying. The dissertation further generalizes the adaptive SAGE algorithm to an adaptive space-alternating generalized projection (SAGP) algorithm that uses the same amount of information as in the conventional receiver;Proposed receivers are tested by simulations and compared with the existing receivers that use the same amount of information. Throughout the analytical analysis and simulations of the proposed receivers, the dissertation shows that, for realistic CDMA communications, achieving both the near-far resistance and the near-optimum performance is possible with the same or similar information required by the conventional receiver

    Physiological Antioxidative Network of the Bilirubin System in Aging and Age-Related Diseases

    Oxidative stress is detrimental to life process and is particularly responsible for aging and age-related diseases. Thus, most organisms are well equipped with a spectrum of biological defense mechanisms against oxidative stress. The major efficient antioxidative mechanism is the glutathione system, operating a redox cycling mechanism for glutathione utilization, which consists of glutathione and its peroxidase and reductase. However, this system is mainly effective for hydrophilic oxidants, while lipophilic oxidants require another scavenging system. Since many age-related pathological conditions are related to lipid peroxidation, especially in association with the aging process, the physiological role of the scavenging system for lipophilic oxidants should be considered. In this regard, the biliverdin to bilirubin conversion pathway, via biliverdin reductase (BVR), is suggested to be another major protective mechanism that scavenges lipophilic oxidants because of the lipophilic nature of bilirubin. The efficiency of this bilirubin system might be potentiated by operation of the intertwined bicyclic systems of the suggested redox metabolic cycle of biliverdin and bilirubin and the interactive control cycle of BVR and heme oxygenase. In order to combat oxidative stress, both antioxidative systems against hydrophilic and lipophilic oxidants are required to work cooperatively. In this regard, the roles of the bilirubin system in aging and age-related diseases are reassessed in this review, and their interacting networks are evaluated

    Environmental Regulations in Private and Mixed Duopolies: Emission Taxes versus Green R&D Subsidies

    In the presence of R&D spillovers, we compare environmental regulations between an emission taxes and green R&D subsidies in private and mixed duopoly markets. We show that the green R&D subsidy is better (worse) than the emission tax when the green R&D cost is low (high) irrespective of the R&D spillovers, whereas the existence of a public firm encourages the government to adopt the subsidy policy. We then show that the optimal policy choice depends on the level of the R&D cost and the degree of R&D spillovers. In particular, when the R&D cost is high and the spillover rate is (not) weak, the government should choose the emission tax and (not) privatize the public firm. However, when the R&D cost is low, such a privatization policy is not desirable to society irrespective of the R&D spillovers

    The 750 GeV Diphoton Excess May Not Imply a 750 GeV Resonance

    We discuss non-standard interpretations of the 750 GeV diphoton excess recently reported by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations which do not involve a new, relatively broad, resonance with a mass near 750 GeV. Instead, we consider the sequential cascade decay of a much heavier, possibly quite narrow, resonance into two photons along with one or more invisible particles. The resulting diphoton invariant mass signal is generically rather broad, as suggested by the data. We examine three specific event topologies - the antler, the sandwich, and the 2-step cascade decay, and show that they all can provide a good fit to the observed published data. In each case, we delineate the preferred mass parameter space selected by the best fit. In spite of the presence of invisible particles in the final state, the measured missing transverse energy is moderate, due to its anti- correlation with the diphoton invariant mass. We comment on the future prospects of discriminating with higher statistics between our scenarios, as well as from more conventional interpretations.Comment: Discussion about the ATLAS Moriond EW2016 added.     Emergent localized states at the interface of a twofold PT\mathcal{PT}-symmetric lattice

    We consider the role of non-triviality resulting from a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that conserves twofold PT-symmetry assembled by interconnections between a PT-symmetric lattice and its time reversal partner. Twofold PT-symmetry in the lattice produces additional surface exceptional points that play the role of new critical points, along with the bulk exceptional point. We show that there are two distinct regimes possessing symmetry-protected localized states, of which localization lengths are robust against external gain and loss. The states are demonstrated by numerical calculation of a quasi-1D ladder lattice and a 2D bilayered square lattice.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

    AbstractThis article investigates environmental regulations on eco-industry in vertical oligopolies, in which the upstream industry produces abatement goods reducing pollutants and the downstream industry produces consumption goods emitting pollutants. We devise the optimal combination of appropriate policy instruments and show that an optimal pollution tax should be used for the negative externality and output restrictions in final production, and an optimal abatement subsidy should incorporate the effect of upstream market restrictions on abatement activity.
