Is Foreign Direct Investment Effective From The Perspective Of Tax Avoidance? An Analysis Of Tax Avoidance Through The International Transfer Pricing Behaviors Of Korean Corporations

This study examines whether multinational companies carry out tax avoidance through subsidiaries. An empirical analysis was conducted of 4,585 Korean firms from 2001 to 2010 by company and year. The results are as follows. First, MNCs that have become more internationally diversified through the establishment of overseas subsidiaries generally show a higher tendency to avoid tax. Thus, the analysis results show a positive correlation between globally diversified MNCs and corporate tax avoidance. This correlation is established due to the firms' active use of tax strategies (investment tax credits, tax cuts) applicable to the various countries in which they have expanded their businesses. Second, the analysis results showed that these firms actively avoided tax with overseas transfer pricing behaviors when compared to companies without overseas subsidiaries. Thus, the adjustment of sales prices and purchase value through actual transactions increased the propensity of the parent company to avoid tax.

Determining the Antecedents to Use Intention in the Area of Telecommunication-Broadcasting Convergence

The convergence of telecommunication and broadcasting is one of the representative innovative technologies in digital environment. It has recently been empathized as an alternative solution to overcome already saturated telecommunication and broadcasting markets. However, the growth of related service and market cannot reach prior expectation due to the lack of understanding on the real users. Telecommunication technologies support users’ instrumental purpose and broadcasting services usually serve their entertainment activities, which have an inherent value. Our research question is which factors influence users’ attitude and decision making in the use of convergence services in the area of telecommunication and broadcasting. To access the determinants, we propose hedonic and utilitarian values as intrinsic and extrinsic motivators, and perceived control as internal and external conditions. To verify our model empirically, we have selected the DMB technology, a good example for the distinctive convergence service of telecommunication and broadcasting. In order for the DMB service to differentiate itself from the existing media and create unique benefits as a business model, service providers must develop individually customized contents based on each user’s context information and life style and deliver them with the format meeting their hedonic needs and demands

Effects of Acupuncture on Alzheimer’s Disease in Animal-Based Research

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease characterized by the accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and severe functional deficits in the brain. The pathogenesis and treatment of AD remain topics of investigation and significant global socioeconomic issues. The effect of complementary medicine has been investigated in managing AD. Acupuncture, a form of therapy practiced for more than 3000 years, has shown positive effects on several neurological disorders including AD. Animal studies have evaluated the specific utility and neuropathological mechanisms addressed by acupoint manipulation; however, no study has summarized the relationships among different acupoints and their therapeutic effects in the context of AD. Therefore, we reviewed the effects of acupuncture at different acupoints in animal models of AD. In general, acupuncture produced therapeutic benefits in rodent models of AD. Studies demonstrate the utility of GV20 as a valuable acupoint for electroacupuncture and manual acupuncture. GV20 stimulation suppresses Aβ generation, improves glucose metabolism, and attenuates neuropathological features in various disease models. However, a lack of sufficient evidence in preclinical and clinical studies makes these results controversial. Additional studies are required to confirm the exact utility of specific acupoints in clinically managing AD

A Study on Virtual Reality Storytelling by Story Authoring Tool Algorithm

The objective of this study was to examine the storytelling principles of virtual reality contents, which are recently grabbing much attention, and the patterns of their generation rules and, based on the results, to analyze the elements and structure of a storytelling method suitable for virtual reality contents. In virtual reality environment, a story is usually being generated between choices made by a user who behaves autonomously under simulated environmental factors and the environmental constraints. This corresponds to a mutually complementary role of representation and simulation, which has been hotly discussed in the field of interactive storytelling. This study was conducted based on the assumption that such a mutually complementary realization is ideal for virtual reality storytelling. A simulation-based story authoring tool is a good example that shows this mutual complementation, in that it develops a story through various algorithms which involves the interaction of agents which occur within the strata of a virtual environment. Therefore, it can be a methodology for virtual reality storytelling. The structures and elements of narratives used in virtual reality storytelling which achieve balance of representation and simulation are much similar to an algorithm strategy of a simulation-based story authoring tool. The virtual reality contents released up to now can be classified into four categories based on the two axes of representation and simulation. The study focused on contents which are layered in higher strata of both representation and simulation. In the perspective of representation strata, these contents are actively using such elements as goal, event, action, perception, internal element, outcome, and setting element, which are constituents of ‘Fabula model’, to generate time relations and cause-effect relations. And in the perspective of simulation strata, the use of the ‘Late commitment’ strategy allowed users to understand the meanings of their actions taken during the process of experimenting with various dynamic principles within the environment

Acute post-cardiopulmonary bypass left atrial thrombosis after mitral valvuloplasty and left atrial thrombectomy

A patient with mitral stenosis and multiple left atrial thrombi underwent valvuloplasty and thrombectomy. While closing the sternum after completing the cardiopulmonary bypass, a new left atrial thrombus was detected by transesophageal echocardiography. We used heparin for the prevention of new thrombus formation and closed the wound after meticulous bleeding control. Three months later, there was no residual thrombus in the left atrium according to the echocardiographic study
