THE ENGRAVED HEAD MOTIFS ON CUPISNIQUE STYLE VESSELS: INNOVATION AND APPROPRIATION IN EARLY ANDEAN ART

This dissertation is a formal and iconographic study of a distinctive engraved motif found on Cupisnique style vessels that were excavated in what is now northern Peru. The Cupisnique style was developed approximately between 1200 – 200 B.C.E., and was mainly centered in the Jequetepeque and the Chicama Valleys in the northern coastal region of Peru. This study includes an analysis of two ceramic vessels in the collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (henceforth VMFA). The purpose of this dissertation is to document and analyze the Cupisnique engraved head motifs and to argue that these motifs reflect the influence of early Formative Ecuador ceramics on the later coastal Cupisnique as well as on the highland Chavín style. In addition to the two VMFA vessels, this study documents and analyzes an additional one hundred seventy seven (177) Cupisnique ceramics vessels that were also engraved with head motifs. These belong to various museums and private collections in South and North America. This study also presents a catalog of all documented head motifs, including those captured on photographs and in original drawings. The Cupisnique head motifs are classified by individual elements, and iconographies of Cupisnique head motifs are presented based on the origin and influence of the motifs

Can official development assistance promote financial development in developing countries?

Thesis(Master) --KDI School:Master of Development Policy,2015The role of foreign aid on economic development has been an inconclusive and tedious debate for decades. In the meantime, most of studies on financial development and economic growth conclude that financial development significantly and positively affects economic development. Only few studies, however, shed light on foreign aid as a determinant of financial development. Based on the findings of positive role financial development on economic growth, this paper explores the aspect of official development assistance as a determinant of financial development that can lead economic development in developing countries. The empirical result shows that official development assistance significant and negative on both financial depth and breadth than other foreign capital inflows, such as remittances and foreign direct investment in developing countries. The results come up with future policy implications on delivery aid and reporting system of official development assistance.OutstandingmasterpublishedYumi PARK

Study of market segmentation management in the hotel industry: A customer equity approach

Scope and Method of Study: The focus of the current study was to evaluate whether the Customer Equity based segmentation approach has an effect on customer equity in the hotel industry. In order to achieve the highest possible Customer Equity, the study suggested the following Customer Equity Management (CEM) process: (a) analyze marketing effort, (b) evaluate marketing strategies, and (c) recommend action plans. The specific objectives of the research were (a) to determine the core Customer Equity drivers in the hotel industry; (b) to examine the impact of the CE-based segmentation on Customer Equity in the hotel industry; and (c) to utilize the CEM process to maximize Customer Equity in the hotel industry. After a thorough literature review, a focus group study was conducted with professionals in the hotel industry in order to identify the primary CE drivers. The results of the qualitative study confirmed the five key drivers of Customer Equity (i.e., convenience, quality, price, brand image, and relationship driver) in the hotel industry. A quantitative analysis was performed, (a) to determine the key CE segments; (b) to demonstrate the five CE drivers' impact on marketing effort using Conjoint Analysis; (c) to maximize the Return-on-Investment (ROI) on marketing effort responsiveness through @Risk simulation; and (d) to develop the marketing action plans for each of the CE segments.Findings and Conclusions: This study found that the CE-based segments consisted of Relationship-Seeking Customer Segment (RSCS), Convenience-Seeking Customer Segment (CSCS), Quality-Seeking Customer Segment (QSCS), Brand Image-Seeking Customer Segment (BSCS), and Price-Seeking Customer Segment (PSCS) in the hotel industry. The drivers that are most effective in terms of marketing effort are different for each of the CE-based segments. The driver that identified the CE-based segment was not always the significant driver in terms of the probability of brand switching, the increase in room-nights they are willing to stay, and the increase in room rate they are willing to pay. Therefore, it behooves the hotel managers to target marketing efforts for each segment separately by clearly identifying what works for them rather than assuming the same efforts would work for all. This study implies that segmenting the hotel customers by CE drivers makes better sense than traditional segmenting methods since it allows better targeting of marketing effort

Formation of Nanometer-Thick Water Layer at High Humidity on Dynamic Crystalline Material Composed of Multi-Interactive Molecules

Crystalline powders self-assembled from interactive discrete molecules reversibly transformed from a porous structure to a 2D one with a nanometer-thick H2O layer by hydration/dehydration. Multi-point weak intermolecular interactions contributed to maintenance of each phase. This structure transformation induced a humidity-dependent ion conductivity change from insulator to 3.4 x 10(-3) S cm(-1).open1122sciescopu

Antepartum Pituitary Necrosis Occurring In Pregnancy with Uncontrolled Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Case Report

Antepartum pituitary necrosis is a rare medical condition that has only been reported in pregnant women with type I diabetes attributable to diabetes-related vasculopathy and hypercoagulability. We present for the first time a case of antepartum pituitary necrosis occurring in an uncontrolled gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) patient. The patient was a 32-yr-old woman at 33 weeks and 2 days of gestation. She suffered from severe headache, blurred vision, dizziness, and vomiting. Her baby was delivered by Cesarean section. The brain magnetic resonance images revealed pituitary necrosis. This suggests that pituitary gland necrosis may also complicate GDM pregnancy when glucose levels are uncontrolled
