    A Review of the Differences between ESD and GCED in SDGs: Focusing on the Concepts of Global Citizenship Education

    Education for sustainable development (ESD) and global citizenship education (GCED) are both adopted as global education agendas in the UN Sustainable Development Goals. However, there are not enough studies which articulate the concept of global citizenship included in GCED and ESD. Thus, this paper compares ESD and GCED in terms of global citizenship concepts. Firstly, utilizing the content review method, the meanings of global citizenship in ESD and GCED are examined. Secondly, the concepts of global citizenship in ESD and GCED are compared. This paper fi nds that global citizenship in GCED is classifi ed as critical global citizenship while the one in ESD is explained as soft global citizenship. Finally, a modified typology of global citizenship is suggested referring to the existing soft global citizenship education and critical global citizenship education. This study is expected to contribute to articulating the conceptual relationship between ESD and GCED

    Tonicity response element binding protein associated with neuronal cell death in the experimental diabetic retinopathy

    AIM: To study the contribution of tonicity response element binding protein (TonEBP) in retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death of diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS: Diabetes was induced in C57BL/6 mice by five consecutive intraperitoneal injections of 55 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ). Control mice received vehicle (phosphate -buffered saline). All mice were killed 2mo after injections, and the extent of cell death and the protein expression levels of TonEBP and aldose reductase (AR) were examined. RESULTS: The TonEBP and AR protein levels and the death of RGC were significantly increased in the retinas of diabetic mice compared with controls 2mo after the induction of diabetes. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) -mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) -positive signals co -localized with TonEBP immunoreactive RGC. These changes were increased in the diabetic retinas compared with controls. CONCLUSION: The present data show that AR and TonEBP are upregulated in the DR and TonEBP may contribute to apoptosis of RGC in the DR.close2

    DiffRef3D: A Diffusion-based Proposal Refinement Framework for 3D Object Detection

    Denoising diffusion models show remarkable performances in generative tasks, and their potential applications in perception tasks are gaining interest. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework named DiffRef3D which adopts the diffusion process on 3D object detection with point clouds for the first time. Specifically, we formulate the proposal refinement stage of two-stage 3D object detectors as a conditional diffusion process. During training, DiffRef3D gradually adds noise to the residuals between proposals and target objects, then applies the noisy residuals to proposals to generate hypotheses. The refinement module utilizes these hypotheses to denoise the noisy residuals and generate accurate box predictions. In the inference phase, DiffRef3D generates initial hypotheses by sampling noise from a Gaussian distribution as residuals and refines the hypotheses through iterative steps. DiffRef3D is a versatile proposal refinement framework that consistently improves the performance of existing 3D object detection models. We demonstrate the significance of DiffRef3D through extensive experiments on the KITTI benchmark. Code will be available

    The International Competitive Relationships of Three Leading Countries in the Global Shipbuilding Industry

    South Korea, China, and Japan are three dominant countries in the global shipbuilding industry, and the competition between them has become more complex over time. The International Maritime Organization environmental regulations and the wave of Industry 4.0 have made the global shipbuilding industry more technology intensive than before. However, after the financial crisis of 2008, Chinas labor-intensive strategy outperformed the technology-intensive competitive strategy adopted by Japan and South Korea, and China was ranked first with the largest market share. This study sets out to explore whether Chinas labor-intensive strategy will remain superior to the technology-intensive one of Japan and South Korea. Specifically, we investigate how competitive relationships between the three countries changed after the 2008 global financial crisis. We also forecast how many ships each country will complete in through 2026. To analyze this dynamic competitive system, we use the three-dimensional Lotka-Volterra model, drawing on annual data reporting the number of ships built. The findings suggest that China has gained a competitive advantage over Japan since the 2008 global financial crisis, while South Korea has maintained a mutualistic relationship with both Japan and China. Our forecast suggests that China may lose its competitive advantage in the near future, if China does not embrace a more technology-intensive approach

    Recently, there have been many studies in medicine related to genetic analysis. Many genetic studies have been performed to find genes associated with complex diseases. To find out how genes are related to disease, we need to understand not only the simple relationship of genotypes but also the way they are related to phenotype. Multi-block data, which is a summation form of variable sets, is used for enhancing the analysis of the relationships of different blocks. By identifying relationships through a multi-block data form, we can understand the association between the blocks in comprehending the correlation between them. Several statistical analysis methods have been developed to understand the relationship between multi-block data. In this paper, we will use generalized canonical correlation methodology to analyze multi-block data from the Korean Association Resource project, which has a combination of single nucleotide polymorphism blocks, phenotype blocks, and disease blocks

    Fabrication of agar-based tissue-mimicking phantom for the technical evaluation of biomedical optical imaging systems

    The development process of the optical systems for various biomedical applications typically involve evaluations of technical performance. One popular evaluation method is to use a reference object such as a phantom that exhibits similar optical properties of tissue. Fabrication of a consistent phantom with known optical properties, such as scattering and absorption, is essential for accurate technical evaluation of the optical system. This paper presents a protocol for fabricating an agar-based tissue-mimicking phantom, offering practical guidance to ensure consistent and reproducible phantom creation. In addition, optical setups that measure light information required for quantifying the optical properties via an inverse adding-doubling (IAD) method are discussed. We demonstrated the fabrication of phantoms with diverse scattering and absorption properties, and the IAD method successfully quantified the optical properties. Moreover, we employed the phantom to assess the imaging depth limitation of a hyperspectral imaging system, demonstrating potential usage of phantoms for performing technical evaluation.</p
