Tangibile/Intangibile. Dialoghi sul Design per i Territori 02
Il Network di Ricerca "D4T - Design for Territories" del Dipartimento di Design del Politecnico di Milano ha condotto un ciclo di focus group con l’obiettivo di attivare la discussione e il confronto sulla tematica del Design per i Territori. I focus group sono concepiti come momenti informali di impostazione critico-problematica, con l’obiettivo che diventino attivatori di un successivo dibattito allargato e condiviso.
Il secondo focus group, tenutosi presso il Dipartimento di Design del Politecnico di Milano il 18 ottobre 2016, ha affrontato il tema del rapporto tra Tangibile e Intangibile cercando di rispondere ai seguenti interrogativi: in che modo il design si occupa del patrimonio e delle risorse tangibili e intangibili dei territori? In che modo il design è in grado di svelare le capacità di un territorio? Quali sono le azioni, gli strumenti e le strategie messe in atto?

On the Nonlinear Shaping Gain with Probabilistic Shaping and Carrier Phase Recovery
The performance of different probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS)techniques in the nonlinear regime is investigated, highlighting its dependence on the PAS block length and the interaction with carrier phase recovery (CPR). Different PAS implementations are considered, based on different distribution matching (DM) techniques—namely, sphere shaping, shell mapping with different number of shells, and constant composition DM—and amplitude-to-symbol maps. When CPR is not included, PAS with optimal block length provides a nonlinear shaping gain with respect to a linearly optimized PAS (with infinite block length); among the considered DM techniques, the largest gain is obtained with sphere shaping. On the other hand, the nonlinear shaping gain becomes smaller, or completely vanishes, when CPR is included, meaning that in this case all the considered implementations achieve a similar performance for a sufficiently long block length. Similar results are obtained in different link configurations ( km, km, and km single-mode-fiber links), and also including laser phase noise, except when in-line dispersion compensation is used. Furthermore, we define a new metric, the nonlinear phase noise (NPN) metric, which is based on the frequency resolved logarithmic perturbation models and explains the interaction of CPR and PAS. We show that the NPN metric is highly correlated with the performance of the system. Our results suggest that, in general, the optimization of PAS in the nonlinear regime should always account for the presence of a CPR algorithm. In this case, the reduction of the rate loss (obtained by using sphere shaping and increasing the DM block length) turns out to be more important than the mitigation of the nonlinear phase noise (obtained by using constant-energy DMs and reducing the block length), the latter being already granted by the CPR algorithm
Una nueva especie de Pagurus (Crustacea: Decapoda: Paguridae), nuevos registros y redescripciĂłn de cangrejos ermitaños para el PacĂfico mexicano
New records are provided for three species of little-known pagurids. All the material reported was collected by the R/V “El Puma” in the central Gulf of California during the GUAYTEC II cruise. New material is reported for Iridopagurus haigae GarcĂa-GĂłmez, 1983, Enallopagurus spinicarpus (Glassell, 1937), and Solenopagurus diomedeae (Faxon, 1893), and these two latter species are redescribed. A new species of hermit crab of the genus Pagurus Fabricius, 1775, is described and illustrated in detail. Among the eastern Pacific species of Pagurus, this new species resembles Pagurus meloi Lemaitre and Cruz Castaño, 2004, P. imarpe Haig, 1974 and P. delsolari Haig, 1974, but differs from these three species in the armature and setation of the chelipeds and second and third pereopods, the shape and armature of the telson, and the number of rows of scales on pereopodal rasp and the presence of a preungual process.Se proporcionan nuevos registros de tres especies de paguridos poco conocidos, Iridopagurus haigae GarcĂa-GĂłmez, 1983, Enallopagurus spinicarpus (Glassell, 1937) y Solenopagurus diomedeae (Faxon, 1893) recolectados durante el crucero GUAYTEC II abordo del B/O “El Puma” en el golfo de California central; además se proporciona una redescripciĂłn para las dos Ăşltimas especies. Se describe e ilustra en detalle una nueva especie de Pagurus Fabricius, 1775. La nueva especie de Pagurus presenta similaridad con Pagurus meloi Lemaitre and Cruz Castaño, 2004, P. imarpe Haig, 1974 y P. delsolari Haig, 1974, pero se diferencia de estas Ăşltimas por la armadura y la setaciĂłn de los quelĂpedos y los pies ambulatorios, la forma y la armadura del telson, y el nĂşmero de lĂneas de escamas sobre la raspa propodal y la presencia de un proceso preungual en los cuartos pereiĂłpodos
Inducible Resistance to Pyrethroid Insecticide is Lacking in Adult Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes have evolved increased resistance to pyrethroid insecticides including permethrin, and studying their metabolic mechanisms of resistance is the window to human counteraction. If early exposure to insecticides can upregulate certain detoxification genes, this creates lower rates of mortality in a single mosquito’s lifetime. Yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) were exposed to a sublethal dosage of permethrin and mortality rates at a later LC50 dose exposure were recorded. Mortality rates of induced mosquitoes were not lower than the mortality rates of unexposed (control) mosquito groups. If early exposure did not increase mortality, either evidence for inducible same-generational resistance remains to be seen in Aedes aegypti, or other factors were responsible for under-stimulating inducible resistance that were not acknowledged in the experimental design. The experiment may be replicated with adjusted test intervals to find the exact interval at which the upregulated proteins are still active and can confer resistance
Nuclear Effects on the UHE Neutrino-Nucleon Deep Inelastic Scattering Cross Section
Using a recent parametrization of nuclear effects in parton distribution
functions we calculate the neutrino-nucleon cross section at energies relevant
for ultra high energy neutrino telescopes. The modification of the cross
section in comparison with the calculation using parton densities in free
nucleons is of the order of few per cent for the parameter range of interest in
neutrino telescopes (A=10 and E=10 GeV) and it reaches 20 % at the highest
energies (E=10 GeV) and for the largest nuclear size (A=190) considered.Comment: 7 pages, Latex, figures as 3 postscript file

The 2000 United States Census is filled with examples of increasing proportions of the American family who have access to computers and the internet. The issue of changes in our culture and the socialization of all parts of society bring logical questions about our children and technology. Where are they learning about the internet? Is the popular press correct in stating that there is a generational gap between parents and their children in socialization of technology? Where are they learning about the various uses of the Internet? This paper attempts to answer the question concerning who is teaching our children (about technology).
