    Productivity, water use efficiency and economics of system of rice intensification (SRI) in Nichabanadhi sub basin of southern Tamil Nadu

    Four hundred and sixteen on-farm demonstrations on system of rice intensification (SRI) were carried out in 350 hectares of farmer’s fields in Sankarankovil, Vasudevanallur and Kuruvikulam blocks of Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu from 2008-09 to 2010-11 under Tamil Nadu – Irrigated Agriculture Modernization and Water Bodies Restoration and Management (TN-IAMWARM) project. Two methods viz., SRI and conventional were compared. The results revealed that the adoption of SRI favorable influenced yield attributes and yield of rice. The maximum grain yield (8222 kg ha-1) obtained from SRI which was higher than conventional method (6534 kg ha-1). Higher grain yield coupled with substantial water saving to the tune of 37.1 per cent resulted in higher water use efficiency of rice under SRI method. The best net income ( Rs. 50, 587) and benefit: cost ratio (3.64) were also associated with SRI than conventional method of rice cultivation. The cost of cultivation was comparatively lesser in SRI which re-sulted in gaining an additional income of Rs. 8080 ha-1 as compared to conventional method of rice cultivation.     Micro/Nanostructure and tribological characteristics of pressureless sintered carbon nanotubes reinforced aluminium matrix composites

    This study reports the manufacture, microstructure, and tribological behaviour of carbon nanotube reinforced aluminium composites against pure aluminium. The specimens were fabricated using powder metallurgy method. The nanotubes in weight percentages of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 were homogeneously dispersed and mechanically alloyed using a high energy ball milling. The milled powders were cold compacted and then isothermally sintered in air. The density of all samples was measured using Archimedes method and all had a relative density between 92.22% and 97.74%. Vickers hardness increased with increasing CNT fraction up to 1.5 wt% and then reduced. The microstructures and surfaces were investigated using high resolution scanning electron microscope (SEM). The tribological tests showed that the CNT reinforced composites displayed lower wear rate and friction coefficient compared to the pure aluminium under mild wear conditions. However, for severe wear conditions, the CNT reinforced composites exhibited higher friction coefficient and wear rate compared to the pure aluminium. It was also found that the friction and wear behaviour of CNT reinforced composites is significantly dependent on the applied load and there is a critical load beyond which CNTs could have adverse impact on the wear resistance of aluminium

    West Nile virus (WNV) is an important arthropod borne flavivirus; usually causes a mild infection called West Nile fever (WNF) in human and horses. Mosquitoes are the principal vectors of WNV. Various Culex species are found to act as vectors in different geographical regions. The virus is maintained in a bird-mosquito cycle in nature. In India, Culex mosquitoes are tentatively incriminated as vectors of WNV. Experimental studies have shown that Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Cx. vishnui, Cx. bitaeniorhynchus and Cx. univittatus, Culex pipiens fatigans and Aedes albopictus could act as potential vectors of WNV. Transovarial transmission of WNV has been experimentally demonstrated in Culex mosquitoes. Apart from mosquitoes, the role of other arthropods is also considered in the maintenance of WNV during inter-enzootic periods. The possible role of ardeid birds in the maintenance of WNV has been described in India. Though very few clinically overt cases of human encephalitis due to WNV are observed, Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is found to dominate in southern India. WNF in horses has not been documented in India. JEV immunized monkeys were protected from WNV challenge and the WNV immunization was found to reduce the disease severity due to JEV. Based on the limited genome sequence analysis, the Indian isolates are grouped together under the genetic lineage-I. WNV infection is diagnosed by IgM antibody capture enzyme linked immunosorbant assay, haemagglutination inhibition test, neutralization test and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). For the effective control of Culex mosquitoes, integrated vector control strategies are recommended. Specific methods are not available for the treatment of WNV infection. However, in patients with encephalitis supportive therapy is recommended. Though a few candidate vaccines are under laboratory trial, no vaccine has been available commercially for the control of WNV infection in human and animals. In view of the global interest on WNV, this paper describes the present status of WNV in India

    Early results from indirect drug susceptibility test for tubercle bacilli

    The indirect susceptibility test results on L-J medium for tubercle bacilli against streptomycin, isoniazid and rifampicin were read at the end of 2 wk and compared with the results at 4 wk. It was found that drug resistance could be correctly predicted in over 70 per cent of cultures including multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) strains at the end of 2 wk. The susceptibility to para-nitrobenzoic acid (PNB) read at 2 wk was able to distinguish non-tuberculous mycobacteria from Mycobacterium tuberculosis cultures. The early detection of resistance by this procedure requires only minimum inputs, and can benefit the majority of patients harbouring drug resistant tubercle bacilli

    Role of Interferon Gamma Release Assay in Active TB Diagnosis among HIV Infected Individuals

In this study, we assessed the sensitivity of Interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) in active tuberculosis patients who were positive for HIV infection and compared it with that of tuberculin skin test (TST). Methodology/Principal Findings: A total of 105 HIV-TB patients who were naı¨ve for anti tuberculosis and anti retroviral therapy were included for this study out of which 53 (50%) were culture positive. Of 105 tested, QuantiFERON-TB Gold intube (QFT-G) was positive in 65% (95% CI: 56% to 74%), negative in 18% (95% CI: 11% to 25%) and indeterminate in 17% (95% CI: 10% to 24%) of patients. The sensitivity of QFT-G remained similar in pulmonary TB and extra-pulmonary TB patients. The QFT-G positivity was not affected by low CD4 count, but it often gave indeterminate results especially in individuals with CD4 count ,200 cells/ml. All of the QFT-G indeterminate patients whose sputum culture were positive, showed #0.25 IU/ml of IFN-c response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA). TST was performed in all the 105 patients and yielded the sensitivity of 31% (95% CI: 40% to 22%). All the TST positives were QFT-G positives. The sensitivity of TST was decreased, when CD4 cell counts declined. Conclusions/Significance: Our study shows neither QFT-G alone or in combination with TST can be used to exclude the suspicion of active TB disease. However, unlike TST, QFT-G yielded fewer false negative results even in individuals with low CD4 count. The low PHA cut-off point for indeterminate results suggested in this study (#0.25 IU/ml) may improve the proportion of valid QFT-G results

    Monoclonal antibodies against mycobacterium avium/intracellulare

    Ten hybridoma cell lines prodacing monoclonaI antibodies (Mabs) against M. avium/intracellulare (Mai) serotype 8 were raised by the fusion of BALB/c mouse myeloma cells (SPZ) to spleen cells from immunized BALB/c mice. The specificity of the monoclonal antibodies was defined using their differing abilities to bind to sonicates from a range of mycobacterial species and strains. Tbe Mabs showed strain and species specificity. Three Mabs bound only to Mai serotype 8 and 1 Mab bound only to Mai serotypes 8 and 16, the only serotypes tested. The results indicate that Mabs specific for Mai species and serotypes can be produced. These could be useful for serodiagnostic and for epidemiological purposes

    Setting: South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC) region with disproportionately high burden of TB in comparison of regional population. Objective: To establish a quality assurance on sputum smear microcopy in SAARC regional network of TB reference laboratories. Methods: Panel of slides were prepared and sent to national TB reference laboratories. The laboratory technician read the slides and sent report to SAARC TB center and report were analyzed. Results: Seven laboratories had no error of any type and one laboratory got two minor types of errors. Conclusion: Mot of the laboratories had excellent performance in panel testing

    Mycobacteriuria in pulmonary tuberculosis patients in Madras, South India

    Three consecutive, entire, early morning urine specimens, collected from each of 137 bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis patients aged more than 12 years were processed for culture of M. tuberculosis by the usual centrifugation method. Of the 411 urine specimens, 5 yielded M. tuberculo- sis. About 50 ml each from 405 of the above specimens, from 135 patients, was also processed for culture by a filtration method and M. tuberculosis was isolated from only one of them. In all, mycobacteriuria was present in 5 (3.6%) of 137 patients (95% confidence inter- val being 1.2% to 8.4%). Of these patients, 92 had no history of previous chemotherapy and 3 (3.3%) excreted tubercle bacilli in Urine (95% confidence interval being 0.6% to 9.3%)
