    Humanity’s diverse predatory niche and its ecological consequences

    Although humans have long been predators with enduring nutritive and cultural relationships with their prey, seldom have conservation ecologists considered the divergent predatory behavior of contemporary, industrialized humans. Recognizing that the number, strength and diversity of predator-prey relationships can profoundly influence biodiversity, here we analyze humanity’s modern day predatory interactions with vertebrates and estimate their ecological consequences. Analysing IUCN ‘use and trade’ data for ~47,000 species, we show that fishers, hunters and other animal collectors prey on more than a third (~15,000 species) of Earth’s vertebrates. Assessed over equivalent ranges, humans exploit up to 300 times more species than comparable non-human predators. Exploitation for the pet trade, medicine, and other uses now affects almost as many species as those targeted for food consumption, and almost 40% of exploited species are threatened by human use. Trait space analyses show that birds and mammals threatened by exploitation occupy a disproportionally large and unique region of ecological trait space, now at risk of loss. These patterns suggest far more species are subject to human-imposed ecological (e.g., landscapes of fear) and evolutionary (e.g., harvest selection) processes than previously considered. Moreover, continued overexploitation will likely bear profound consequences for biodiversity and ecosystem function

    Validation of food store environment secondary data source and the role of neighborhood deprivation in Appalachia, Kentucky

    Background Based on the need for better measurement of the retail food environment in rural settings and to examine how deprivation may be unique in rural settings, the aims of this study were: 1) to validate one commercially available data source with direct field observations of food retailers; and 2) to examine the association between modified neighborhood deprivation and the modified retail food environment score (mRFEI). Methods Secondary data were obtained from a commercial database, InfoUSA in 2011, on all retail food outlets for each census tract. In 2011, direct observation identifying all listed food retailers was conducted in 14 counties in Kentucky. Sensitivity and positive predictive values (PPV) were compared. Neighborhood deprivation index was derived from American Community Survey data. Multinomial regression was used to examine associations between neighborhood deprivation and the mRFEI score (indicator of retailers selling healthy foods such as low-fat foods and fruits and vegetables relative to retailers selling more energy dense foods). Results The sensitivity of the commercial database was high for traditional food retailers (grocery stores, supermarkets, convenience stores), with a range of 0.96-1.00, but lower for non-traditional food retailers; dollar stores (0.20) and Farmer’s Markets (0.50). For traditional food outlets, the PPV for smaller non-chain grocery stores was 38%, and large chain supermarkets was 87%. Compared to those with no stores in their neighborhoods, those with a supercenter [OR 0.50 (95% CI 0.27. 0.97)] or convenience store [OR 0.67 (95% CI 0.51, 0.89)] in their neighborhood have lower odds of living in a low deprivation neighborhood relative to a high deprivation neighborhood. Conclusion The secondary commercial database used in this study was insufficient to characterize the rural retail food environment. Our findings suggest that neighborhoods with high neighborhood deprivation are associated with having certain store types that may promote less healthy food options

    Long-distance migratory shorebirds travel faster towards their breeding grounds, but fly faster post-breeding

    Long-distance migrants are assumed to be more time-limited during the pre-breeding season compared to the post-breeding season. Although breeding-related time constraints may be absent post-breeding, additional factors such as predation risk could lead to time constraints that were previously underestimated. By using an automated radio telemetry system, we compared pre- and post-breeding movements of long-distance migrant shorebirds on a continent-wide scale. From 2014 to 2016, we deployed radio transmitters on 1,937 individuals of 4 shorebird species at 13 sites distributed across North America. Following theoretical predictions, all species migrated faster during the pre-breeding season, compared to the post-breeding season. These differences in migration speed between seasons were attributable primarily to longer stopover durations in the post-breeding season. In contrast, and counter to our expectations, all species had higher airspeeds during the post-breeding season, even after accounting for seasonal differences in wind. Arriving at the breeding grounds in good body condition is beneficial for survival and reproductive success and this energetic constraint might explain why airspeeds are not maximised in the pre-breeding season. We show that the higher airspeeds in the post-breeding season precede a wave of avian predators, which could suggest that migrant shorebirds show predation-minimizing behaviour during the post-breeding season. Our results reaffirm the important role of time constraints during northward migration and suggest that both energy and predation-risk constrain migratory behaviour during the post-breeding season

    A cultural look at performance appraisals: the role of individualism and collectivism in rating accuracy

    Bibliography: p. 100-117The relationships between rating accuracy and raters' levels of individualism and collectivism orientation and independent and interdependent self-identities, were investigated through a laboratory study. University students (N= 181) were asked to rate three potential teaching assistants on three performance dimensions related to lecturing skills. In addition to the main effects of raters' orientations and self-identities on five rating accuracy criteria, the moderating role of rating purpose (administrative vs. developmental) was investigated. Results indicated that collectivism was positively related to lower levels of differential accuracy and that rating purpose significantly moderated the relationship between raters' self-identity and lenient ratings. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed along with suggestions for future research

    Derlin-2-Deficient Mice Reveal an Essential Role for Protein Dislocation in Chondrocytesâ–¿

    Protein quality control is a balance between chaperone-assisted folding and removal of misfolded proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Cell-based assays have been used to identify key players of the dislocation machinery, including members of the Derlin family. We generated conditional knockout mice to examine the in vivo role of Derlin-2, a component that nucleates cellular dislocation machinery. In most Derlin-2-deficient tissues, we found constitutive upregulation of ER chaperones and IRE-1-mediated induction of the unfolded protein response. The IRE-1/XBP-1 pathway is required for development of highly secretory cells, particularly plasma cells and hepatocytes. However, B lymphocyte development and antibody secretion were normal in the absence of Derlin-2. Likewise, hepatocyte function was unaffected by liver-specific deletion of Derlin-2. Whole-body deletion of Derlin-2 results in perinatal death. The few mice that survived to adulthood all developed skeletal dysplasia, likely caused by defects in collagen matrix protein secretion by costal chondrocytes
