Comparison of serum protein (haptoglobin and group-specific component) and red cell enzyme polymorphisms (adenosine deaminase, phos- phohexose isomerase, adenylate kinase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucomutase, acid phosphatase, lactate and malate dehydrogenase) in Muslims from Delhi and Jats from Harayana shows significant differences betw een the two populations. These are consistent with an historical interpretation whereby gene exchange between the Muslim gene pool, derived from the Moghul immigrants, apd the regional Harayanvi population has not yet proceeded far enough to eliminate the pre-existing differences. Differences in the observed heterozygosity are compatible with this explanation
