In this paper we establish the starshapedness of the level sets of the capacitary potential of a large class of fully-nonlinear equations for condensers in Carnot groups, once a natural notion of starshapedness has been introduced. Our main result is Theorem 1.2 below.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of the London Mathematical Societ

Is the Discouraged Worker Effect Time-Varying?

This study investigates the relationship between the female labour force participation and the female employment rate in Italy by adopting non-linear econometric modelling. In our specification we are unable to reject a nonlinear relationship. This implies that the discouraged worker effect is timevarying.Discouraged Workers, Non-linearity

Designing the Optimal Length of Working Time

How many hours per week should workers in the United States and Germany spend at their paying jobs? The present paper addresses this question by constructing policymakers’ reaction functions capable of modelling the optimal length of working time as a function of the relevant labour market variables. The empirical analysis is based on the optimal control algorithm. Given a policymaker’s loss function and a structural model of the labour market we define alternative specifications of reaction functions where the response coefficients indicate how policymakers should react to any news in the labour market in order to stabilize employment and wages. We also perform a comparative analysis on the ability of the rules to correspond to historical working-time records. The results suggest that simple rules perform quite well and that the advantages obtained from adopting an optimal control-based rule are not so great. Moreover, the analysis emphasizes the success of the wage-based rule and of the employment based rule in the US and Germany, respectively. Finally, we propose a policy rule to capture the dynamics of the weekly working hours. According to our rule the length of the workweek is an inverse function of the deviation between the actual and potential employment level.Policy Rule, Working-time, Dynamic Optimization

Political struggle and earthquake: Cicero, Clodius and the prodigious events of 56 BC.

This study aims to investigate a single prodigious episode whose importance was such as to draw the attention of the haruspices. Indeed, in 56 BC the ager Latiniensis was shaken by a powerful fremitus which was probably followed by an earthquake. This prodigious event had a pivotal role in the context of the serious political tension of the middle years of the 1st century BC and, especially, in the violent dispute between Cicero, Milo and Clodius. The analysis of those events encourages both reflection on the traces of seismic activity between Rome and the Alban hills in ancient times and on the incidence and the instrumental use of natural and prodigious events in the political agon during the late Republican period.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Gli autografi di Aquiles Estaço (1524-1581) nella Biblioteca Vallicelliana di Roma tra contenuto epigrafico e annotazioni antiquarie

This study focuses on the epigraphic content of Aquiles Estaço’s autograph codices preserved in the Vallicelliana Library, except for the most conspicuous ms. B 104 which has been the subject of a recent publication, thus deserving a separate discussion. Most of the recorded material concerns Italic, Latin and Greek inscriptions of the Roman age, but there are also Christian and medieval epigraphic texts. The analysis of each manuscript, with their extremely heterogeneous content, also made it possible to identify useful elements to determine the chronology of their use, allowing us to propose a first periodization of Estaço’s manuscript production. Attention has also been paid to the evolution of antiquarian interests, as well as to the correspondence of the humanist.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
