The ALFA Zone of Avoidance Survey: Results from the Precursor Observations
The Arecibo L-band Feed Array Zone of Avoidance Survey (ALFA ZOA) will map
1350-1800 square degrees at low Galactic latitude, providing HI spectra for
galaxies in regions of the sky where our knowledge of local large scale
structure remains incomplete, owing to obscuration from dust and high stellar
confusion near the Galactic plane. Because of these effects, a substantial
fraction of the galaxies detected in the survey will have no optical or
infrared counterparts. However, near infrared follow up observations of ALFA
ZOA sources found in regions of lowest obscuration could reveal whether some of
these sources could be objects in which little or no star formation has taken
place ("dark galaxies"). We present here the results of ALFA ZOA precursor
observations on two patches of sky totaling 140 square degrees (near l=40
degrees, and l=192 degrees). We have measured HI parameters for detections from
these observations, and cross-correlated with the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic
Database (NED). A significant fraction of the objects have never been detected
at any wavelength. For those galaxies that have been previously detected, a
significant fraction have no previously known redshift, and no previous HI
detection.Comment: To appear in Proceedings of IAU Symp #244, "Dark Galaxies and Lost

Kottanadan
Structure optimization effects on the electronic properties of BiSrCaCuO
We present detailed first-principles calculations for the normal state
electronic properties of the high T superconductor
BiSrCaCuO, by means of the linearized augmented plane wave
(LAPW) method within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). As a
first step, the body centered tetragonal (BCT) cell has been adopted, and
optimized regarding its volume, ratio and internal atomic positions by
total energy and force minimizations. The full optimization of the BCT cell
leads to small but visible changes in the topology of the Fermi surface,
rounding the shape of CuO barrels, and causing both the BiO bands,
responsible for the pockets near the \textit{\=M} 2D symmetry point, to dip
below the Fermi level. We have then studied the influence of the distortions in
the BiO plane observed in nature by means of a
orthorhombic cell (AD-ORTH) with space group. Contrary to what has been
observed for the Bi-2201 compound, we find that for Bi-2212 the distortion does
not sensibly shift the BiO bands which retain their metallic character. As a
severe test for the considered structures we present Raman-active phonon
frequencies () and eigenvectors calculated within the frozen-phonon
approximation. Focussing on the totally symmetric A modes, we observe
that for a reliable attribution of the peaks observed in Raman experiments,
both - and a-axis vibrations must be taken into account, the latter being
activated by the in-plane orthorhombic distortion.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figure
Multi-phonon Resonant Raman Scattering Predicted in LaMnO3 from the Franck-Condon Process via Self-Trapped Excitons
Resonant behavior of the Raman process is predicted when the laser frequency
is close to the orbital excitation energy of LaMnO3 at 2 eV. The incident
photon creates a vibrationally excited self-trapped ``orbiton'' state from the
orbitally-ordered Jahn-Teller (JT) ground state. Trapping occurs by local
oxygen rearrangement. Then the Franck-Condon mechanism activates multiphonon
Raman scattering. The amplitude of the -phonon process is first order in the
electron-phonon coupling . The resonance occurs {\it via} a dipole forbidden
to transition. We previously suggested that this transition (also seen
in optical reflectivity) becomes allowed because of asymmetric oxygen
fluctuations. Here we calculate the magnitude of the corresponding matrix
element using local spin-density functional theory. This calculation agrees to
better than a factor of two with our previous value extracted from experiment.
This allows us to calculate the absolute value of the Raman tensor for
multiphonon scattering. Observation of this effect would be a direct
confirmation of the importance of the JT electron-phonon term and the presence
of self-trapped orbital excitons, or ``orbitons''.Comment: 8 pages and 3 embedded figures. The earlier short version is now
replaced by a more complete paper with a slightly different title. This
version includes a caculation by density-functional theory of the dipole
matrix element for exciting the self-trapped orbital exciton which activates
the multiphonon Raman signal
