A Content Oriented Information Sharing System for Disaster Management

    Get PDF
In response to natural and man-made hazards multiple organisations usually are involved in a very complex situation. On the other hand, extreme weather situations due to the climate change create hazards in areas which were considered safe before. In order to improve the capabilities of involved organisations in responding and preparing for disaster events, the availability of an efficient information sharing approach is a key enabler. To this end, we propose a communication system based on a content oriented architecture tailored to disaster management. It includes a catalogue that is offering web services for publishing and subscribing of disaster information and for further collaboration amongst agencies and first responders. Moreover, the considered approach also allows for full content access control and enables a flexible system. The paper shows the current status of the system design. Next steps will include the implementation and evaluation of the approach

Towards adaptability in 3G service provision

    No full text
The evolution of mobile networks and systems to 3 rd generation and beyond is expected to create a telecommunication service provision model that differs considerably from existing paradigms. A new environment is envisioned, where a plethora of advanced, customisable applications, developed by multiple co-operating entities, will be ubiquitously accessible via diverse terminals and networks. In this context, where service management and provision will become substantially more complex, the need is emerging for intelligent service deployment and management platforms that are able to undertake the necessary inter-domain co-ordination and mediation. Moreover, the requirement for service provision adaptability becomes critical, since applications should be seamlessly delivered and executed in a large variety of environments. In this paper we provide a brief overview of a proposed 3G service provision platform and describe the mechanisms it uses to achieve a high level of adaptability and flexibility

Generic Adaptation Mechanism for the Support of Context-Aware Service Provision in 3G Networks

    No full text
The forthcoming era of 3 generation (3G) mobile communications is heralded to change the wireless telecommunication experience dramatically. User expectations are raised to a significantly higher level, towards the demand for terminal-, network- and location-aware provision of ubiquitous, personalized multimedia services. Under this perspective, the need for adaptability of services and systems to largely diverse contexts is clearly identified. Generic, dynamically extensible adaptation mechanisms that are independent of the subject and criteria of adaptation can be a significant step towards this direction. In the present paper , we introduce a mechanism aiming to fulfill these requirements. The proposed adaptation system has been designed, implemented and successfully integrated and tested in a distributed software platform for provision of value added services to 3G mobile users
