First passage time of N excluded volume particles on a line
Motivated by recent single molecule studies of proteins sliding on a DNA
molecule, we explore the targeting dynamics of N particles ("proteins") sliding
diffusively along a line ("DNA") in search of their target site (specific
target sequence). At lower particle densities, one observes an expected
reduction of the mean first passage time proportional to 1/N**2, with
corrections at higher concentrations. We explicitly take adsorption and
desorption effects, to and from the DNA, into account. For this general case,
we also consider finite size effects, when the continuum approximation based on
the number density of particles, breaks down. Moreover, we address the first
passage time problem of a tagged particle diffusing among other particles.Comment: 9 pages, REVTeX, 6 eps figure
On the response of the equatorial and low latitude ionospheric regions in the Indian sector to the large magnetic disturbance of 29 October 2003
The present paper investigates the response of the equatorial and low latitude ionosphere over the Indian longitudes to the events on 29 October 2003 using ionosonde data at Trivandrum (8.5° N (0.5° N geomagnetic), 77° E) and SHAR (13.7° N (5.7° N geomagnetic), 80.2° E), groundbased magnetometer data from Trivandrum and Total Electron Content (TEC) derived from GPS data at the locations of Ahmedabad (23° N (15° N geomagnetic), 72° E), Jodhpur (26.3° N (18.3° N geomagnetic), 73° E) and Delhi (28° N (20° N geomagnetic), 77° E). Following the storm sudden commencement, the TEC at all the three stations showed an overall enhancement in association with episodes of interplanetary electric field penetration. Interestingly, real ionospheric height profiles derived using the ionosonde data at both Trivandrum and SHAR showed significant short-term excursions and recoveries. In the post noon sector, these features are more pronounced over SHAR, an off equatorial station, than those over Trivandrum indicating the increased effects of neutral winds

Constructing the Semi - Unitary Transformation (SUT) to obtain the
supersymmetric partner Hamiltonians for a one dimensional harmonic oscillator,
it has been shown that under this transformation the supersymmetric partner
loses its ground state in T^{4}- space while its eigen functions constitute a
complete orthonormal basis in a subspace of full Hilbert space.

Daytime sodium airglow emission measurements over Trivandrum using a scanning monochromator: first results
This paper presents measurement of daytime Sodium (Na) airglow emissions at 589.6 nm wavelength using a ground based 1-m scanning monochromator from Trivandrum (8.5° N, 77° E, 0.5° N dip latitude), a near-equatorial station in India. The Na emission intensity exhibits significant temporal variability within a day and from one day to another. The Na intensity has been compared with the daytime OH airglow intensity at 731.6 nm simultaneously measured using the unique Multiwavelength Dayglow Photometer (MWDPM). The temporal variabilities of the Na and OH intensities corroborate each other in most of the occasions without any appreciable time delay, although a small time delay up to ˜10 min has been observed at times. It appears that the variability of daytime Na emissions is influenced too by the photo-chemical excitations. The observed similarities in the Na and OH intensities are believed to be due to the similar roles played by [O] and O3 (in their photo-chemical excitations) and the dynamics occurring at about the same altitude region (˜90 km). It has also been found that the gravity waves play significant role in producing the short-scale oscillations in these emissions

The currently established formats for how a Web site can publish metadata about a site's pages, the robots.txt file and sitemaps, focus on how to provide information to crawlers about where to not go and where to go on a site. This is sufficient as input for crawlers, but does not allow Web sites to publish richer metadata about their site's structure, such as the navigational structure. This paper looks at the availability of Web site metadata on today's Web in terms of available information resources and quantitative aspects of their contents. Such an analysis of the available Web site metadata not only makes it easier to understand what data is available today; it also serves as the foundation for investigating what kind of information retrieval processes could be driven by that data, and what additional data could be provided by Web sites if they had richer data formats to publish metadata
A Complete Set of VSOP Observations of 3C279
We have compiled a complete set of VSOP observations of 3C279, consisting of eight 5 GHz, and six 1.6 GHz, VSOP observations, all of which include the VLBA in the ground array. We are using the data-set to determine brightness temperature limits from model-fits to the visibilities, the transverse structure of the jet over its first 20 milliarcseconds, and parsec-scale spectral index maps
Supersonic Jet Interactions in a Plenum Chamber
Understanding thè supersonic jet interactions in a plenum chamber is essential for thè design of hot launch systems. Static tests were conducted in a small-scale rocket motor ioaded with a typical nitramine propellaiit to produce a nozzle exit Mach number of 3. This supersonic jet is made to interact with plenum chambers having both open and closed sides. The distance between thè nozzle exit and thè back piate of plenum chamber are varied from 2. 5 to 7. 0 times thè nozzle exit diameter. The pressure rise in thè plenum chamber was measured using pressure transducers mounted at different locatìons. The pressure-time data were analysed to obtain an insight into thè flow field in thè plenum chamber. The maximum pressure exerted on thè back piate of plenum chamber is about 25-35 per cent. of thè maximum stagnation pressure developed in thè rocket motor. Ten static tests were carried out to obtain thè effect of axial distance between thè nozzle exit and thè plenum chamber back piate, and stagnation pressure in thè rocket motoron thè flow field in thè open-sided and closed-sided plenum chambers configurations
Short communication: Uncovering quantitative trait loci associated with resistance to Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis infection in Holstein cattle using a high-density single nucleotide polymorphism panel
peer-reviewedMycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP) is the etiological agent of Johne's disease in cattle. Johne's disease is a disease of significant economic, animal welfare, and public health concern around the globe. Therefore, understanding the genetic architecture of resistance to MAP infection has great relevance to advance genetic selection methods to breed more resistant animals. The objectives of this study were to perform a genome-wide association study of previously analyzed 50K genotypes now imputed to a high-density single nucleotide polymorphism panel (777K), aiming to validate previously reported associations and potentially identify additional single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with antibody response to MAP infection. A principal component regression-based genome-wide association study revealed 15 putative quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with the MAP infection phenotype (serum or milk ELISA tests) on 9 different chromosomes (Bos taurus autosomes 5, 6, 7, 10, 14, 15, 16, 20, and 21). These results validated previous findings and identified new QTL on Bos taurus autosomes 15, 16, 20, and 21. The positional candidate genes NLRP3, IFi47, TRIM41, TNFRSF18, and TNFRSF4 lying within these QTL were identified. Further functional validation of these genes is now warranted to investigate their roles in regulating the immune response and, consequently, cattle resistance to MAP infection
